Watch: First Trailer for “The Spectacular Now” Starring Miles Teller and Shailene Woodley

spectacularnow

“The Spectacular Now” wowed Sundance back in January, winning Special Jury Prizes for Acting for its leads Miles Teller and Shailene Woodley, and then it wowed me when I finally got to see it earlier this week, and I can’t wait for it to wow all of you when it’s released in August. But today, for a little taste of what awaits you, the first trailer from the film has dropped.

In the James Ponsoldt film, Teller plays popular party-hard high school student Sutter Keely, who’s dumped by his equally popular girlfriend (Brie Larson) and comes across shy outsider Aimee Finicky (Woodley). He sees her as a project and wants to bring her out of her shell, but he’s not prepared for the changes she’ll invoke in him. It may sound like a typical good-girl-saves-bad-boy romance, but trust me, it’s not. The material is elevated in great part due to Teller and Woodley’s natural, understated chemistry, some of which I think is fairly evident in the trailer.

“The Spectacular Now” will be released on August 2nd, and the first trailer can be viewed below.

Watch: Jonah Hill and Margot Robbie Party with Leonardo Dicaprio in First Trailer for “The Wolf of Wall Street”

wolfofwallstreet

Leonardo Dicaprio works hard and plays hard in the first trailer for Martin Scorsese’s “The Wolf of Wall Street”, and does it with a little help from Jonah Hill and Aussie newcomer Margot Robbie. Dicaprio tries to convince us he’s a 26 year old Wall Street wunderkind named Jordan Belfort here, with the yachts, crazy parties, and monkeys in suits because why the hell not to go along with it.

But it’s not all fun and games for Belfort, who struggled with addiction, cheated on his first wife (Broadway star Cristin Milioti), then married Robbie’s character, who had her own addiction problems, and was eventually convicted of securities fraud and money laundering and eventually spent 22 months in federal prison. Kyle Chandler, in what has become his signature film archetype, plays the FBI agent on Belfort’s case, while Matthew McConaughey continues his career renaissance as a showy associate of Belfort’s.

Scorsese and Dicaprio are obviously hoping to strike Oscar gold again with”The Wolf of Wall Street”, set for a November 15th release. See the first trailer below.

Watch: Justin Timberlake Faces the Wrath of Ben Affleck in First Trailer for “Runner Runner”

runnerrunnertrailer

Looks like Justin Timberlake and Liam Hemsworth will have a lot in common this summer. The first trailer for Timberlake-headlined gambling thriller “Runner Runner” has dropped, and it bears some striking resemblances to yesterday’s “Paranoia” trailer starring Hemsworth. Timberlake, like Hemsworth, plays a college student strapped for cash who takes a shady job for a mysterious boss, getting in way over his head, only this is in the gritty online gambling industry somewhere in South America, rather than upscale, high tech Manhattan.

The Brad Furman thriller also stars Ben Affleck as Timberlake’s new boss, who seems worthy of idolatry at first but soon reveals his true colors, and Gemma Arterton as his love interest and potential ally or foe. Throw in Anthony Mackie as an FBI agent on the illegal company’s trail and again we have another Trailer That Tells You Everything. A seemingly darker, grittier cousin to “Paranoia” where being fed to crocodiles is an actual concern for people making wrong moves, “Runner Runner” will be released on September 25th, and the first trailer can be viewed below. Which trailer has piqued your interest more?

Watch: Liam Hemsworth Battles “Paranoia” in First Trailer for Corporate Espionage Thriller

paranoiatrailer

Welcome to another edition of Trailers That Give Everything Away, brought to us today by Robert Luketic’s espionage thriller “Paranoia” starring Liam Hemsworth, Gary Oldman and Harrison Ford. Hemsworth plays Adam Cassidy, a poor Brooklyn boy with an affinity for gadgets working at the lowest level of a high tech firm, who’s plucked from obscurity by the boss (Oldman) to work for his competition (Ford), only as a spy. Adam says yes, but he’s not in it for the fast cars and expensive clothes and the hot girls like Amber Heard, he just wants the money to take care of his sick father. Naturally, he thinks he can do one job and get out, but the big dogs have other plans for him.

I would say I don’t want to spoil it further, but the truth is you can do it for yourself by watching the trailer. This still looks like a fun summer movie though, and the younger Hemsworth is certainly doing his best to channel some of big brother Chris’s magnetic screen presence, so we’ll be keeping an eye on this one. “Paranoia” will be released on August 16th and the trailer via Yahoo can be viewed below.

Watch: Joel Courtney and Isabelle Furhman in First Trailer for “The Between”

June 4, 2013 | Posted by Linda Ge in Videos 2 Comments

thebetweentrailer

A lot of confusing imagery swirl about in the first trailer for indie supernatural drama “The Between”, which stars Joel Courtney and Isabelle Fuhrman (who are currently filming another movie – “Dear Eleanor” – together) as a brother-sister duo who are apparently abandoned in some enchanted forest populated by terrifying and eclectic creatures.

I use the word “apparently” because it’s hard to piece together exactly what happens based on this 2-minute trailer, voiced-over by Courtney attempting to decipher what The Between actually is but just leaving this writer incredibly confused. What we can gather is this: Courtney and Furhman go camping with their dad (James Le Gros), who goes unconscious, leaving the two teens to fend for themselves. They are soon followed by kids their age but who clearly reside in the forest and may have special powers. Meanwhile, the dad turns up and is tasked with a “quest” that involves a cool black sports car for some reason, even though that’s clearly an unpractical tool to have in a forest.

Giorgio Serafini directed this film, which used to be called “The Healer”, and we can only hope the trailer is not representative of the final product. Watch it below and if you figure out what’s happening, be sure to let us in on it!

Watch: Brie Larson Stars in First Trailer for SXSW Winner “Short Term 12″

shortterm12

Brie Larson, one of our Faces to Watch in 2013, is certainly turning some heads on the indie scene this year. She plays supporting roles in buzzy Sundance films “Don Jon” and “The Spectacular Now”, but it was at SXSW that she had the spotlight all to herself as the star of Destin Cretton‘s “Short Term 12″, which went on to win both the Grand Jury Prize and the Audience Award. The first trailer from the film has now been released, giving us our first glimpse of Larson nailing the complicated drama.

Larson plays Grace, a dedicated supervisor at a foster-care facility for at-risk youth. Grace is passionate about her work, but soon her own troubled history and the arrival of a new teenage charge (Kaitlyn Dever) shake up her world. “The Newsroom”‘s John Gallagher, Jr. also stars in the film as Grace’s co-worker and boyfriend, and the film has been set for an August 23rd release.

This is high on our most anticipated list and we are also hoping to catch this at the LA Film Festival later this month, but for now, the first trailer can be viewed below.

Watch: Rooney Mara, Casey Affleck, Romance and Gunfights in First Trailer for “Ain’t Them Bodies Saints”

atbstrailer

Rooney Mara and Casey Affleck are star-crossed lovers in the first trailer for David Lowery’s hit Sundance and Cannes western romance “Ain’t Them Bodies Saints”, embracing, separating and longing for each other after an arrest for a crime spree separates them just as she gets pregnant with their child. Much has been made of the beauty of this film and the brilliant cinematography by Bradford Young is clearly evident in this first glimpse of it, as are the strong acting choices by the impressive cast.

Our own Rebecca Lewis gave the film a glowing A, saying it “feels like a classic already, old-fashioned to an extent but also a timeless tale of love, family and limits – and almost as if the director is beginning a fresh re-examination of these outlaw tales of old”, with Affleck and Mara turning in “the performances of their careers.” As for those Malick comparisons, well, the high volume of magic hour shots is certainly reminiscent, but “Saints” also seems much more verbose and action-driven, with a clear narrative and an inevitable conclusion.

Watch the first trailer below. “Ain’t Them Bodies Saints”, also starring Ben Foster and Nate Parker, releases on August 16th.

Watch: Dane DeHaan Misses the Concert in First Trailer for “Metallica: Through the Never”

May 23, 2013 | Posted by Linda Ge in Videos 1 Comment

throughthenever

Dane DeHaan plays a rock n roll roadie sent out on a mysterious task during a concert in the 3D genre-bending “Metallica: Through the Never”, and the first trailer has been released. Producers were quick to dismiss “Through the Never” as a concert film, the likes of which we’ve seen from pop stars like Justin Beiber and Katy Perry, calling it instead “a dramatic movie in which a concert takes place.”

So DeHaan sets out into the unknown and gets into a pretty severe car accident, only to awaken in the midst of a violent showdown between looters and police in riot gear. As if that weren’t bad enough, it looks like he’s missing a hell of a concert. But you won’t have to because “Metallica Through the Never” will be released in 3D and on IMAX screens on September 27th. Watch the first trailer below.

Watch: Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Scarlett Johansson Go All Jersey Shore in First Trailer for “Don Jon”

donjontrailer

Joseph Gordon-Levitt charmingly introduces the first trailer for his directorial debut “Don Jon”, and the footage itself looks unexpected and wholly entertaining, with Gordon-Levitt and Scarlett Johansson doing their best Jersey Shore impressions to play a young couple whose new relationship is complicated by his addiction to porn. Really, who expected a respected young actor’s directorial debut to be a Jersey-set rom com instead of a dark, gritty drama? This guy is full of surprises and we can’t wait to dive into his latest.

The film sold for unprecedented cash at the Sundance Film Festival, with Relativity Media picking it up and setting it for an October 18th wide release. Brie Larson, Julianne Moore and Tony Danza co-star in the comedy and you can watch the first trailer now below.
