Tom Hardy is “The Outsider” in Japan-Set WWII Drama

June 6, 2013 | Posted by Linda Ge in Casting Leave a comment

tom-hardy Prolific Japanese director Takashi Miike is set to make his English-language debut, and he has landed Tom Hardy to star in “The Outsider”, a post-War War II drama, according to Deadline. Andrew Baldwin wrote the script about an American GI who becomes integrated into the Japanese yakuza, or criminal underground. Filming is set to begin in Japan in early 2014.

Up next for the ever-busy “Inception” and “The Dark Knight Rises” breakout star is two back to back films with Noomi Rapace, with the duo recently wrapping crime drama “Animal Rescue” and soon set to move onto spy thriller “Child 44.” Hardy is also attached to Doug Liman’s “Everest” and PTSD drama “Samarkand.”

Josh Pence Cast in Kevin Costner Football Drama “Draft Day”

April 18, 2013 | Posted by Linda Ge in Casting Leave a comment

The “unsung hero” of “The Social Network”, Josh Pence has gone on to be the little-seen unsung hero of most of his films since, but could that finally change with his latest? The Wrap reports Pence has landed a supporting role in football drama “Draft Day”, which Ivan Reitman is directing and Kevin Costner, Jennifer Garner, Denis Leary, Ellen Burstyn and Frank Langella are starring in.

Costner will play the Cleveland Browns General Manager, who must make tough professional and personal choices in the 24 hour period of the NFL draft as he trades for the number one pick. Rajiv Joseph and Scott Rothman wrote the script, which ended up on last year’s Black List. Leary will play the new head coach of the team, who butts heads with Costner, while Langella plays the owner of the team and Burstyn will play Costner’s mother. Pence will play the expected first pick of the NFL draft (so presumably he may finally get some screentime). The film will shoot at the actual NFL Draft at Radio City Music Hall in New York on April 25th.

Pence played a twin alongside Armie Hammer in David Fincher’s “The Social Network”, but had to see Hammer’s face superimposed over his body in the finished product. He’s scored cameo-sized roles in “The Dark Knight Rises” and “Gangster Squad” since, but is clearly still looking for more substantial roles.

Anne Hathaway to Reunite with Christopher Nolan for “Interstellar”

anne-hathaway Sorry haters, Anne Hathaway is having a hell of a moment and it doesn’t look like it’ll be over anytime soon. After playing Catwoman in last year’s “The Dark Knight Rises”, the new Oscar winner is now set to reunite with director Christopher Nolan on his highly secretive, highly anticipated next project, according to Deadline. The apty-titled space-set blockbuster “Interstellar” already has Matthew McConaughey set for one of the other lead roles.

The project has been in development for years, at one point with Steven Spielberg attached to direct, but now it’s being fast-tracked with Nolan on board directing from a script written by his brother and frequent collaborator Jonathan Nolan. Like everything he does, there are very few plot details available, but it deals with a group of scientific explorers who encounter time travel and alternate dimensions through a wormhole, or “a heroic interstellar voyage to the farthest borders of our scientific understanding.” Filming will probably begin soon as the film already has a November 7, 2014 release date.

Hathaway, after having previously been nominated for “Rachel Getting Married”, won her first Academy Award for her role as Fantine in “Les Miserables” earlier this year and appears to have no plans to slow down. “Interstellar” is already her second film commitment since winning her Oscar, as she also recently signed on to star in Lynn Shelton’s dark indie comedy “Laggies” opposite Chloe Moretz, Sam Rockwell and Mark Webber.

Tom Hardy to Tackle PTSD in Wartime Drama “Samarkand”

tom-hardy Busy British actor Tom Hardy has added one more project to his plate. Deadline reports Hardy will develop and star in “Samarkand”, a contemporary soldier’s tale which deals with the topic of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder.

Brothers Greg and Olly Williams wrote the script after developing the story with Hardy and Solar Pictures’ Bobby Paunescu and Greg Williams, a famous celebrity photographer known for his portraits of Daniel Craig’s Bond among others, will make his directorial debut on the project. Hardy will play an SAS soldier who returns home from combat in the Middle East and has trouble reintegrating back into society.

It’s unclear when this will begin production as Hardy’s upcoming schedule locks up tighter. Up next for the “Inception” and “The Dark Knight Rises” breakout star is two back to back films with Noomi Rapace. The duo will film crime drama “Animal Rescue” in March, before moving on to spy thriller “Child 44″ in May. Hardy is also attached to Doug Liman’s “Everest” as well as Steven Knight’s “Locke.”

Anne Hathaway will sing alongside British musician Johnny Flynn in new film “Song One”

songone Looks like Oscar nominee Anne Hathaway will get to sing again on the big screen, and sooner than expected. Hathaway is set to star alongside acclaimed British singer/actor Johnny Flynn in new film “Song One“.

Hathaway will star as an archaeologist who falls in love with a rock star, to be played by Flynn, after returning home to the US when her brother falls ill.

Written and directed by Kate Barker-Froyland, “Song One” will be Barker-Froyland’s first feature length picture, and Britain’s Baz Bamigboye for The Daily Mail confirms that both Hathaway and Flynn will sing in the film, with indie band Jenny & Johnny (Jenny Lewis and Jonathan Rice) writing music for both Flynn and Hathaway. Filming is due to begin this Autumn.

Flynn, lead singer of band Johnny Flynn and The Sussex Wit is an acclaimed stage actor and musician but this would be his first major starring role. A two time Oscar nominee, Hathaway is the favorite to win Best Supporting Actress this Sunday at the 85th Academy Awards for her captivating performance as Fantine in the worldwide smash adaptation “Les Miserables“. With a rising profile thanks to her Les Mis performance and a starring role in Christopher Nolan’s “The Dark Knight Rises“, she looked set to take on the female lead role in Steven Spielberg’s “Robopocalypse” reboot but that film has now stalled.

Tom Hardy to star in real time drama “Locke”

tom-hardyWe’re only five weeks into 2013 and Tom Hardy has already signed on for his second project of the year. The British actor has signed on to star in “Locke“, which will be set over 90 minutes and filmed in real time. Directed by Steven Knight, who also wrote the screenplay, The Hollywood Reporter reports that production will begin later this month in London.

“Locke” follows the story of Ivan Locke, a family man with the perfect job which is about to peak. Then Locke takes a call which will leave his “life unraveling in a tension-fuelled, 90-minute race against time”.

Recently joining up with Noomi Rapace for two upcoming projects – spy thriller “Child 44″ and crime drama “Animal Rescue” – Hardy is in hot demand following an incredible few years. Over the last few months, he has been on the shortlist for David Yates’ retake of “Tarzan“, has been sought for a “Jack Ryan” spin-off and may climb everest for a biopic of George Mallory, the first man to scale the highest mountain in the world.

“Animal Rescue” co-stars Noomi Rapace and Tom Hardy to reunite for “Child 44″

January 30, 2013 | Posted by Linda Ge in Casting 1 Comment

The newest rising star duo to book back-to-back projects together are Tom Hardy and Noomi Rapace, who have not even began filming on their first collaboration, “Animal Rescue”, just yet, but are already making plans to do it again sometime soon. THR reports the two are in negotiations to star in Soviet-era spy thriller “Child 44″ for director Daniel Espinosa.

They were rumored to have been eyed for the film back in December when their crime drama “Animal Rescue” casting came together, but now it’s firming up. They will husband and wife in “Child 44″, with Hardy as a Soviet officer who becomes the target of suspicion from his own government and Rapace as his wife, who pretends to be loyal and doting but hiding secrets of her own. Richard Price wrote the script based on Tom Rob Smith’s novel. Hardy and Rapace will film “Animal Rescue” in March and then “Child 44″ in May.

After breaking out in Christopher Nolan’s “Inception” and then again in “The Dark Knight Rises”, Hardy has been undeniably deemed Hollywood’s favorite new star and seemingly has his pick of projects. He’s sticking to mostly dark fare, producing two separate features about illegal poaching and is attached to a big screen adaptation of video game franchise “Splinter Cell”, as well as Doug Liman’s “Everest.” He recently wrapped up shooting on “Mad Max: Fury Road” and was last seen on screen in John Hillcoat’s violent Cannes premiere “Lawless.”

Rapace was the original Swedish “The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo” and has made a successful transition to Hollywood roles, culminating with Ridley Scott hand-picking her to star in his “Alien” prequel-esque “Prometheus.” She was last seen in Brian DePalma’s “Passion” opposite Rachel McAdams and will next appear opposite Colin Farrell in revenge thriller “Dead Man Down.”

Juno Temple joins “The Dark Knight Rises” co-star Joseph Gordon-Levitt in “Sin City: A Dame to Kill For”

January 18, 2013 | Posted by Linda Ge in Casting 1 Comment

Juno Temple, Jeremy Piven and Ray Liotta are the latest cast members to join Robert Rodriguez and Frank Miller’s comic book sequel adaptation “Sin City: A Dame to Kill For”, according to The Playlist.

Miller and Rodriguez are already underway filming on the sequel to 2005′s “Sin City” based on Miller’s graphic novel, and a large chunk of the original cast is returning, including Mickey Rourke, Clive Owen, Bruce Willis, Jaimie King, Jessica Alba and Rosario Dawson. Gordon-Levitt will play a newly created character named Johnny, a “smooth gambler” role that had originally been offered to Johnny Depp, but there are no details on who the newest cast members will play. It’s also unclear if Temple has taken the female lead role that had not yet been cast last we heard, a role originally meant for Angelina Jolie. If so, it’s quite a get for the young British actress.

Temple, a current nominee for BAFTA’s EE Rising Star Award, last appeared in Christopher Nolan’s Batman conclusion “The Dark Knight Rises” and will next be seen opposite Michael Angarano in indie comedy “The Brass Teapot”, the trailer to which we unveiled earlier today. She recently completed filming on Disney’s Sleeping Beauty reimagining “Maleficent” opposite Angelina Jolie and Elle Fanning, as well as supernatural thriller “Horns” with Daniel Radcliffe and Max Minghella.

Joseph Gordon-Levitt committs to “Sin City: A Dame to Kill For”, won’t lead “Guardians of the Galaxy”

January 7, 2013 | Posted by Linda Ge in Casting Leave a comment

Glad this is finally settled. No, hotly in demand actor Joseph Gordon-Levitt will not star in Marvel’s “Guardians of the Galaxy”, or the “Godzilla” reboot. Instead, according to Deadline, Gordon-Levitt has committed to a starring role in sequel “Sin City: A Dame to Kill For”, which is already filming.

Robert Rodriguez and Frank Miller are directing the sequel to 2005′s “Sin City”, based on Miller’s graphic novel, and a large chunk of the original cast is returning, including Mickey Rourke, Clive Owen, Bruce Willis, Jaimie King, Jessica Alba and Rosario Dawson, while newcomers don’t stop with Gordon-Levitt. Josh Brolin is among the names being tossed around as potential cast additions, while the film’s female lead has still yet to be cast as well, even though filming has been on-and-off-going since November. Gordon-Levitt will play a newly created character named Johnny, a “smooth gambler” role that had originally been offered to Johnny Depp.

Gordon-Levitt is arguably the most sought-after young actor in Hollywood right now, especially after a breakout year in 2012 that saw him play an integral transition character in Christopher Nolan’s “The Dark Knight Rises” (is “Justice League” next?), as the lead of Rian Johnson’s impressive sci-fi thriller “Looper” and as son Robert to Daniel Day Lewis’ “Lincoln.” Next, his directorial debut “Don Jon’s Addiction”, in which he also co-stars opposite Scarlett Johansson, which the now multi-hyphenate will premiere at Sundance in a couple of weeks.

Holy crossover, Batman! Joseph Gordon-Levitt also in the mix for Marvel’s “Guardians of the Galaxy”

January 2, 2013 | Posted by Linda Ge in Casting 1 Comment

In an intriguing turn of events, Joseph Gordon-Levitt of all people has popped up in conjunction to Marvel’s current search for a leader of Phase 2 film “Guardians of the Galaxy.” Deadline reports his name is now in the mix but couldn’t nail down whether he had already been offered the role of Peter Quill, aka Star-Lord, or not. Others who had been in contention include Eddie Redmayne, Lee Pace, Jim Sturgess, Joel Edgerton and Jack Huston, and most recently, Zachary Levi.

This newest bit of rumor is particularly intriguing, of course, because Gordon-Levitt had seemed poised to play a big role in upcoming adaptations of DC comics over at Warner Bros after having played John Blake in Christopher Nolan’s “The Dark Knight Rises.” Hell, there were even rumors he could be taking over as Batman in 2015′s “Justice League”, DC’s answer to Marvel’s “The Avengers.” That rumor never solidified, and if Gordon-Levitt is indeed available to Marvel filmmakers for their rigorous 9-picture deals, it would seem to deflate the Batman rumors even more.

“Guardians of the Galaxy” is already set for an August 1, 2014 release, so filming should begin by early next year under the direction of James Gunn. We’re not so fond of this potential crossover choice, nor were we of Levi’s potential casting, since he’s already Fandral in “Thor.” Seriously, Marvel, there are other actors out there.

Gordon-Levitt is coming off a strong 2012 after starring in Nolan’s Batman conclusion, Rian Johnson’s sci-fi thriller “Looper” and Steven Spielberg’s “Lincoln” opposite Daniel Day-Lewis. He recently completed filming on his directorial debut, the romantic comedy “Don Jon’s Addiction” in which he also stars opposite Scarlett Johansson and Julianne Moore. That film is headed to Sundance next month.
