First Official Still of Natalie Portman in Terrence Malick’s “Knight of Cups”

May 15, 2013 | Posted by Linda Ge in Images Leave a comment

knightofcupssm The first official image from Terrence Malick’s “Knight of Cups” is basically what we’d expected it to be, based on set photos from about a year ago. THR has the first photo of Natalie Portman and Christian Bale frolicking in the waves, and reports footage from the secretive auteur’s latest will be screened for potential buyers at Cannes this week.

The film is now said to be about celebrities and excess, while it had been previously reported that Bale plays a man “on a search for love and truth.” Not that the two are mutually exclusive, of course. In addition to Portman, Bale was also photographed filming very similar beach frolicking scenes with a variety of young actresses including Imogen Poots, Freida Pinto, Teresa Palmer and Isabel Lucas. The film also stars Cate Blanchett.

See the first photo of Portman and Bale in “Knight of Cups” below. It has no US distributor just yet.

Watch: Olga Kurylenko and Rachel McAdams go “To the Wonder” in first trailer for new Terrence Malick film

December 19, 2012 | Posted by Linda Ge in Videos Leave a comment

Lovers silhouetted against windswept fields, sweeping camera movements, dreamy sequences that don’t fully make sense, soaring classical music. Yup, it’s a new Terrence Malick film alright, and this time, it’s Ben Affleck, Olga Kurylenko and Rachel McAdams frolicking about as Javier Bardem waxes poetic in voiceover about love.

“To the Wonder”
received mixed reviews when it premiered at the Venice Film Festival, and even Kurylenko and McAdams have been caught stumbling when trying to describe the film, which loosely follows Affleck’s character as he meets one girl (Kurylenko), falls in and out of love with her, and strikes up a romance with an old flame back home (McAdams). According to many audiences though, it’s mostly just the actors twirling around in beautiful locales and very little dialogue or exposition.

“To the Wonder” will be released on April 12, 2013 and the new trailer can be viewed below. Pity there’s no higher quality version available yet because it is a Malick film, after all, and thus very beautiful to look at. The HD version has been added!

Set photos reveal Michael Fassbender and Boyd Holbrook wooing Natalie Portman on Terrence Malick’s next

October 10, 2012 | Posted by Linda Ge in Images Leave a comment

Just like with “Knight of Cups” before it, set photos are the method through which we are gathering scraps of info on elusive director Terrence Malick’s next untitled feature. The film formerly titled “Lawless” is now filming in Austin, Texas, and today we have our glimpse of two unannounced cast additions cozying up to Natalie Portman. Set against the backdrop of the music scene in Texas, the film is loosely described as being about two intersecting love triangles.

Michael Fassbender is seen holding Portman in his arms, while rising star Boyd Holbrook looks much more restrained, though there are subtle hints of intimacy between the two during their scene as well. Is this one of the intersecting love triangles the film is purported to be about in action right before our eyes? Of course, this adds more questions to how the cozy duos of Christian Bale and Haley Bennett and Ryan Gosling and Rooney Mara fit into Portman’s seemingly already complicated love life. Gosling and Mara have been pictured filming in Austin in recent weeks as well, and Gosling and Fassbender apparently had at least one brief scene together, but thus far, that’s been the only “intersecting” we’ve seen take place.

With “To the Wonder” and “Knight of Cups” on the docket for release before this film, it may be a long while before we get any answers. For now, some new set photos of Portman, Gosling, Holbrook and Fassbender can be seen below, and Just Jared has even more.

Brit Marling joins Terrence Malick-produced young Lincoln biopic “The Green Blade Rises”

September 28, 2012 | Posted by Linda Ge in Casting 1 Comment

Get ready for Lincoln: The Prequel. If, after watching Benjamin Walker play Abe as a vampire hunter and seeing what Spielberg and Daniel Day Lewis bring out in November’s “Lincoln”, you are still thirsting for more on our 16th President, rest assured, here comes “The Green Blade Rises.” The Terrence Malick-produced, A.J. Edwards-written-and-directed biopic will focus on Lincoln’s childhood, where his future is clearly influenced by various adults in his life.

Jason Clarke and Diane Kruger are set to play young Abe’s father and stepmother, respectively, and now Deadline reports Wes Bentley and Brit Marling are joining the cast as well to play more influential adult figures in Lincoln’s childhood. Bently will play Lincoln’s first school teacher, while Marling will play Nancy, Lincoln’s mother who died when he was 9. The film will be shot in black and white and begins production this fall.

Marling has become the It Girl of the indie scene thanks to her dueling Sundance breakouts in “Another Earth” and “Sound of My Voice” in 2011, both of which she also co-wrote. She can currently be seen playing Richard Gere’s daughter in thriller “Arbitrage” and recently completed work on another indie she co-wrote and starred in, “The East.” She’ll next be seen opposite Robert Redford and Shia Labeouf in “The Company You Keep.”

Jason Clarke to play Abe Lincoln’s dad in Terrence Malick-produced “The Green Blade Rises” opposite Diane Kruger

We already got Abe as a vampire hunter, and Lincoln gets Daniel Day Lewis’ed come December, but clearly audiences just can’t get enough of the 16th President of the United States. A new film, “The Green Blade Rises” will follow Abe’s early years and will be produced by Terrence Malick, and Deadline reports Australian actor Jason Clarke has landed the male lead in the film, who is not Abe, but his father, Tom Lincoln. Diane Kruger is already on board to play Tom’s wife and Abe’s stepmother, Sarah Lincoln.

Written and directed by longtime Malick collaborator A.J. Edwards, “The Green Blade Rises” will trace the hardships over the course of three years in young Abraham’s life, including one incident where his father abandons him in the wilderness in the middle of winter. Tom is described as having “a callous, quiet demeanor, verbally and physically abusive towards Abe on many occasions, but [also] lets his son know how proud he is of him.” The film will be shot in black and white and begins production this fall.

Clarke can currently be seen as the third brother to Shia LaBeouf and Tom Hardy in John Hillcoat’s “Lawless”, and has also wrapped up shooting on Kathryn Bigelow’s Bin Laden thriller “Zero Dark Thirty”, set for release in December, and Baz Luhrmann’s “The Great Gatsby”, recently pushed back to next summer. He’s currently filming “White House Down” opposite Channing Tatum.

First look at Isabel Lucas on the set of “Knight of Cups” with newest unannounced cast addition Teresa Palmer

July 8, 2012 | Posted by Linda Ge in Images Leave a comment

Imogen Poots, Freida Pinto, and now Teresa Palmer. Terrence Malick is checking young actresses off one by one as he films them frolicking on the beach with Christian Bale for his new film, “Knight of Cups.” Today we have our first look at Palmer in the waves, just like her predecessors, this time joined by an actual previously announced cast member, fellow Aussie Isabel Lucas, thanks to Just Jared.

Unlike her predecessors, Palmer is seen in the arms of Bale’s frequent beach buddy, Wes Bentley, while Lucas takes the road more traveled by strolling hand-in-hand with Bale, like Pinto and Natalie Portman before her. Thus far Palmer is the only lady seen with Bently, so could this mean her chances of showing up in Malick’s final cut are higher than her counterparts? Hard to say without any semblance of a plot or release date in sight. Bale, Portman and Cate Blanchett will move on with Malick this fall to music-centric romance “Lawless” with Ryan Gosling, Haley Bennett and Rooney Mara, but no word if any of the frolicking beach bunnies will join them as well.

See the photos of Palmer and Lucas below and head over to Just Jared for more. Which young actress will be wooed in the waves next? Felicity Jones? Brit Marling? Amanda Seyfried seems like a safe bet too. Leave us your guesses!

Freida Pinto the latest to be romanced by Christian Bale in set photos from Terrence Malick’s “Knight of Cups”

June 27, 2012 | Posted by Linda Ge in Casting, Images Leave a comment

It seems Natalie Portman and Imogen Poots are just not enough for Christian Bale. In Terrence Malick’s “Knight of Cups”, Bale plays a man “on a search for love and truth”, and apparently what that entails is wooing one beautiful young lady after another. His latest conquest: “Slumdog Millionaire” star Freida Pinto.

The new photos really don’t give us any new insight into what the film is about, other than Bale’s character gets around a lot, and should try to come up with some new places other than the beach to take his dates. In addition to Portman and Poots, Bale has also been seen filming with Cate Blanchett. There’s still one announced cast member unaccounted for via set photos, and that’s Australian actress Isabel Lucas.

See the new photos below and more of Bale and Pinto over at The Playlist, who also have new shots of Bale frolicking with Wes Bentley. Who will we see pop up on the beach with Bale next?

Set photos reveal Imogen Poots also part of Terrence Malick’s “Knight of Cups” with Christian Bale

June 12, 2012 | Posted by Linda Ge in Images 1 Comment

Terrence Malick’s new movies continue to get curiorser and curiorser. Notoriously secretive, it was a miracle Malick allowed anyone to release cast lists and titles at all for his two upcoming back-to-back features, “Lawless” and “Knight of Cups”, which is now filming in LA. From the sole press release, we know Christian Bale, Natalie Portman and Cate Blanchett would be part of both films, and that Haley Bennett, Ryan Gosling and Rooney Mara would join them for the former, while Aussie actress Isabel Lucas is part of the latter.

Well, now new photos from the set of “Knight of Cups” seem to reveal a new cast member that had been kept under wraps for whatever reason, and it’s British rising star Imogen Poots, here sporting punk-rock black hair with yellow streaks and an all black ensemble – something we’ve noticed is a bit of a trend on this pair of movies. Bale and Poots look decidedly less romantic in these shots than he has previously with Portman and Bennett, so it’s unclear what the relationship is here, though we do know he plays a man on a search for “love and truth.” Gee, can they vague that up for us? Similarly, “Lawless” is about love as well, two intersecting love triangles to be precise. And while they share much of the same cast and set photos from both films seem way too similar to be coincidental, it’s (tentatively) believed the two films are stand-alones.

See the new photos of Poots shooting with Bale below, courtesy of The Playlist, and be sure to head over there for more.

First Look: Natalie Portman romanced by Christian Bale on the beachside set of Terrence Malick’s “Knight of Cups”

May 31, 2012 | Posted by Linda Ge in Images 6 Comments

New mom/Oscar winner Natalie Portman is back at work and today we have our first look at the actress on the beach in Malibu, filming a playful and romantic scene with Christian Bale for Terrence Malick’s “Knight of Cups.” British newspaper The Daily Mail snapped photos of the two playing in the waves, holding hands and being downright adorable in the highly secretive film that’s only the first of two that Malick will shoot back to back this summer and fall.

Naturally, very little is known about each film, and while Malick maintains they will be standalone features, “Knight of Cups” and follow-up, (the previously titled) “Lawless”, feature much of the same cast and similar themes. Bale, Portman, Cate Blanchett, Wes Bentley and Isabel Lucas star in “Knight of Cups” described as one man’s search for love and truth, while Bale, Portman and Blanchett will also go on to star in “Lawless” with Ryan Gosling, Rooney Mara and Haley Bennett, which revolves around two intersecting love triangles set against the backdrop of the Texas music scene. And hey, are we seeing one of those intersecting love triangles being formed already?

We are probably still a long ways away from getting any solid answers, so for now, check out the new photos of Bale and Portman below and hit up The Daily Mail for a bunch more. We can only assume “Knight of Cups” may be slated for sometime in 2013. Malick’s still got “To the Wonder” (with Ben Affleck, Rachel McAdams, Olga Kurylenko, etc) to release first.

Natalie Portman ends hiatus, joins Terrence Malick’s back-to-back “Knight of Cups” and “Lawless”

February 8, 2012 | Posted by Linda Ge in Casting Leave a comment

New mom and new Oscar winner Natalie Portman is ready to get back to work and has picked a hell of a comeback vehicle. Deadline reports the “Black Swan” actress has committed to starring in both of Terrence Malick’s next movies, which will film back to back this summer and fall. First she’ll do “Knight of Cups” with Christian Bale, Cate Blanchett and Isabel Lucas, and then take on “Lawless”, also with Bale and Blanchett in addition to Ryan Gosling, Rooney Mara and Haley Bennett.

Of course, there are no plot details on either project, though “Lawless” perhaps being somewhat musically inclined might be a logical conclusion after Bale and Bennett and then Gosling and Mara were spotted filming… something at various Texas music festivals. That footage is widely believed to be pre-production and rehearsal work, and will not end up in the final film. Also interesting is the crossover cast members between the two films, first Bale and Blanchett, and now Portman as well, though the narratives are said to be separate and distinct.

Acting steadily since she was 13, Portman received her first Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actress for 2004′s “Closer” and followed it up with a win her second time around for Best Actress in Darren Aronofsky’s psychological ballerina thriller “Black Swan.” Always deft at doing both indie and mainstream films, she followed it up with a couple of lower brow comedies, “No Strings Attached” and “Your Highness”, and played love interest to Chris Hemsworth in Marvel’s blockbuster hit “Thor.” Malick’s films will mark her return to acting since winning the Oscar and having her first baby last June.
