Andrew Garfield to Star in Martin Scorsese’s “Silence”

May 7, 2013 | Posted by Linda Ge in Casting 1 Comment

andrew-garfield The most unexpected casting news of the week goes to… Andrew Garfield hasn’t committed to a film outside the franchise since becoming “The Amazing Spider-Man” back in 2010, but now he’s back in a big way. Variety reports Garfield has signed on for the lead role in Martin Scorsese’s long-gestating passion project “Silence.”

Scorsese has been trying to make the film for over twenty years, but things are finally clicking into the exact right places for him to begin shooting in June of 2014. Set in the 17th Century when Japan is in a period of religious persecution of Christians, Garfield will play the role of Father Rodrigues, a Jesuit priest who travels to the country amid rumors that his mentor has abandoned the Church. Ken Watanabe plays Rodrigues’ interpreter, and a largely Japanese cast also includes Issei Ogata. The film will mostly be in Japanese, and Scorsese expects it will be smaller than his last few films, but insists it is still a thriller which should have broad appeal.

Garfield had been poised to become of the new A-Listers to take over Hollywood after his critically acclaimed (and should have been Oscar nominated) role in David Fincher’s “The Social Network” coupled with a career-making get in becoming Marc Webb’s “The Amazing Spider-Man”, but though he was pursued for various projects like Doug Liman’s “Luna”, Warren Beatty’s Howard Hughes biopic and the troubled “Akira” adaptation, he has not committed to a film since becoming Peter Parker. He did find time to star in “Death of a Salesman” on Broadway last year, for which he was nominated for a Tony, but it will very good to have him back on the big screen.

First Look at Dane DeHaan as Harry Osborn in “The Amazing Spider-Man 2″

April 21, 2013 | Posted by Linda Ge in Images 2 Comments

tasm-harrysm We’ve seen glimpses of Andrew Garfield, Shailene Woodley, Emma Stone and even Jamie Foxx looking quite outlandish as Electro filming “The Amazing Spider-Man 2″ around New York over the past couple of months, and not to be left out, today Dane DeHaan has taken to Twitter to give us what appears to be the first official photo of Harry Osborn.

DeHaan, like his fellow newbie Woodley, looks good to us taking on the iconic role of Peter Parker’s best friend turned enemy and the son of the Green Goblin, Norman Osborn (to be played by Chris Cooper in this new retelling). Wearing a fancy suit and climbing into the back of a private car, looking slightly angry and sinister, DeHaan looks well suited to the rich outsider Harry first glimpsed in Marvel comics in 1965.

The sequel’s cast also includes Paul Giamatti as the villainous Rhino and Felicity Jones in an unspecified role, neither of whom have been spotted yet. But with filming due to continue through July, hopefully we’ll get some more details about their characters soon. But for now, it looks as if we’ve gotten a look at most of the main characters featured in the continuation of Marc Webb’s “Untold Story” of Spider-Man.

The first photo of DeHaan as Harry can be viewed below, and “The Amazing Spider-Man 2″ will be released on May 2, 2014.

First Look at Shailene Woodley as Mary Jane Watson with Andrew Garfield on the Set of “The Amazing Spider-Man 2″

February 26, 2013 | Posted by Linda Ge in Images 1 Comment

spidey-andrewshailenesm We got a first glimpse of Peter Parker yesterday, and now here’s Mary Jane Watson! Shailene Woodley joined co-star Andrew Garfield on the set of “The Amazing Spider-Man 2″ today, and Just Jared and Zimbio have the first photos.

Woodley sported her new MJ-styled red hair as she filmed a scene with Garfield’s Peter, who’s working on an old car as she pulls up on a motorcycle. Not much to see here, but it is our first look at Woodley in full-blown MJ garb and she looks great. Presumably director Marc Webb has scheduled all of Mary Jane’s scenes (which aren’t supposed to be too many) for the beginning of the shoot since the in demand Woodly is expected to begin filming on YA adaptation “Divergent” at the beginning of April. Dane DeHaan, who recently talked about bulking up for his role as Harry Osborn, will probably be spotted soon, as well as Emma Stone, who is returning as Gwen Stacey, and Jamie Foxx and Paul Giamatti, joining the franchise as villains Electro and Rhino, respectively.

“The Amazing Spider-Man 2″ will be released on May 2, 2014 and several new images of Woodley and Garfield from today’s filming in Brooklyn are below.

“The Amazing Spider-Man 2″ Suit Revealed as Andrew Garfield Spotted Filming in NYC

February 25, 2013 | Posted by Linda Ge in Images 1 Comment

tasm2sm Sony Pictures released the first official photo of the superhero’s new suit for “The Amazing Spider-Man 2″ today, and the timing of the release became clear as just a few hours later, Andrew Garfield himself was spotted donning the suit for our first glimpse of the set of the Marc Webb comic book adaptation sequel.

Webb has been tweeting sometimes cryptic photos from the set, but this is the first outdoor shoot and Britain’s Daily Mail got the first photos of the titular webslinger himself. Garfield returns as Peter Parker, Emma Stone is back as Gwen Stacy, Sally Field returns to reprise Aunt May and even Martin Sheen as Uncle Ben is back (somehow). We only have vague plot speculations based on comic canon, but Peter’s new friends include Shailene Woodley as Mary Jane Watson and Dane DeHaan as Harry Osborn, while new adversaries are taking the forms of Jamie Foxx as Electro and Paul Giamatti as Rhino.

“The Amazing Spider-Man 2″ will be released on May 2, 2014 and the full image of the new suit, as well as a couple of pictures of Garfield and who looks to be an upside down stuntman on set, are below.

“Chronicle” star Dane DeHaan joins Andrew Garfield to play Harry Osborn in “The Amazing Spider-Man 2″

December 3, 2012 | Posted by Linda Ge in Casting 2 Comments

Peter Parker’s expanding class of friends and foes are nearly complete. Director Marc Webb announced via Twitter today that “Chronicle” star Dane DeHaan (one of our favorites!) has landed the pivotal role of Harry Osborn in the sequel to “The Amazing Spider-Man”, which sees Andrew Garfield returning as the webbed crusader, as well as Emma Stone as Gwen Stacy. Jamie Foxx was also recently cast as villain Electro.

DeHaan beat out not one but two shortlists of other young actors vying for the part, but we think Webb made absolutely the perfect choice in the end. Shailene Woodley is also joining the cast to play Mary Jane Watson, with both newcomers presumably having supporting roles in this first sequel but to be greatly expanded in the conclusion of the trilogy. Filming begins early next year with a release date already set for May 2nd, 2014.

Last seen on the big screen in “Lawless” opposite Tom Hardy and Shia Labeouf, DeHaan heads to Sundance next January with Beat generation origin pic “Kill Your Darlings” alongside Elizabeth Olsen and Danielle Radcliffe, and also has Derek Cianfrance’s “The Place Beyond the Pines” opposite Ryan Gosling and Bradley Cooper awaiting release.

See Webb’s Twitter announcement below.

UPDATE: Douglas Booth, Eddie Redmayne, Sam Claflin and Boyd Holbrook testing for “The Amazing Spider-Man 2″

November 19, 2012 | Posted by Linda Ge in Casting 3 Comments

UPDATE: According to THR, Booth is indeed testing for Harry Osborn, along with “Les Miserables” actor Eddie Redmayne, “Pirates of the Caribbean”‘s Sam Claflin and “The Host” star Boyd Holbrook. THR also states Webb is now seeking an athletic, good looking Harry and the initial shortlist of DeHaan, Alden Ehrenreich and Brady Corbet is now defunct, though this doesn’t explain why DeHaan was taking a meeting with the filmmakers alongside Booth. More as this story develops…

ORIGINAL STORY: Maybe. Fans over at Comic Book Movie spotted Andrew Garfield and Harry Osborn hopeful Dane DeHaan heading into “The Amazing Spider-Man 2″ director Marc Webb’s house with scripts (and lunches) in hand along with another unidentified young actor. Well, the comment section identified that young actor as British up and comer Douglas Booth, who was not mentioned on the original shortlist for Harry, but who clearly has something to talk about with Webb and Garfield.

CBM believes the three will be having screen tests for the Harry Osborn role, but we can’t help but wonder: Who brings a salad to a screen test? And in even further over-analyzing these photos, both DeHaan and Booth are carrying salads in. Surely Webb and Garfield wouldn’t have two Harry hopefuls over at the same time (aca-awkward), nor would they have lunch twice just to be polite, so could it be that DeHaan and Booth are not up for the same role at all? Not being a huge Spider-Man history buff, I have no idea if there is another significant role for a young actor besides Harry Osborn, but perhaps a more well-informed reader could let us know.

“The Amazing Spider-Man 2″ seeking “dark and edgy” Harry Osborn in Dane DeHaan, Brady Corbet or Alden Ehrenreich

November 14, 2012 | Posted by Linda Ge in Casting 1 Comment

Now that Andrew Garfield has found his alter ego Peter Parker an MJ in Shailene Woodley and a villainous foe in Jamie Foxx as Electro, director Marc Webb and Sony are looking to cast Peter his best friend/nemesis, Harry Osborn. THR reports that at the moment, the actors being bandied about include Dane DeHaan, Brady Corbet and Alden Ehrenreich.

At the moment, filmmakers are said to be looking for a “dark and edgy” Harry, changed from an earlier “bigger, athletic” description, making the trio shortlisted above great fits all, though THR also warns other actors may come into play as the character of Osborn in this incarnation is still evolving. Filming begins in February on the sequel of the rebooted Marvel franchise, which will see Garfield returning as the webslinger, as well as Emma Stone as Spidey’s first love Gwen Stacy. Meanwhile, Woodley’s Mary Jane role is said to be somewhat supporting this time around, but will be expanded greatly for the conclusion of the planned trilogy. The same could certainly be true for whoever lands the Osborn role, as the character starts out as a friend to Peter, but ultimately becomes his greatest enemy, the Green Goblin (taking over for his father Norman).

Shailene Woodley in talks to play Mary Jane Watson opposite Andrew Garfield in “The Amazing Spider-Man” sequel

October 10, 2012 | Posted by Linda Ge in Casting 4 Comments

YES! From the beginning, we’ve made no secret of the fact that we would like to see Peter Parker’s One True Love Mary Jane Watson have a role in Marc Webb’s reboot franchise “The Amazing Spider-Man”, and it looks like we will finally get our wish with the recently confirmed sequel. Variety reports “The Descendants” breakout star Shailene Woodley is the studio’s first choice and is in early talks to play the role opposite Andrew Garfield as Peter.

Emma Stone, who played Peter’s first love Gwen Stacey in the first film, is still in negotiations regarding her return, but it’s expected that she will also reprise her role alongside Garfield. As such, it’s not clear if Woodley’s MJ will be a romantic love interest just yet. After all, Gwen and MJ were roommates and friends in the comics, and it’s not until after Gwen’s iconic death that Peter and MJ find comfort and ultimately love with each other. This also certainly bodes well that Gwen’s death, which is so crucial to Spider-Man’s legacy, will indeed be immortalized on screen, as Webb and Stone have hinted towards.

Watch: Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone in another high-flying, web-slinging trailer for “The Amazing Spider-Man”

May 3, 2012 | Posted by Linda Ge in Videos Leave a comment

So we’re three or four trailers into the promo cycle for Marc Webb’s reboot of “The Amazing Spider-Man”, and at this point, it seems like there’s just nothing new to show (that they’re not saving for the movie itself, that is). A new full length trailer is below, and while it offers brief glimpses of new scenes of Andrew Garfield searching for answers about his parents, taking to becoming Spider-Man with nerdy glee, romancing Emma Stone as Gwen Stacy and ultimately fending off Rhys Ifans as The Lizard, we’re really not treading any new territory. And perhaps we don’t need to. The footage still boasts flawless and striking special effects, taking particular pride in its many flying sequences, and Garfield and Stone still seem like they’ll make a great couple on screen, so really, we’re still excited about this one.

“The Amazing Spider-Man” will open on July 3rd and we can’t wait to see how it ranks against “The Avengers” and “The Dark Knight Rises.” See the new trailer below.

Watch: Andrew Garfield in first scene clip from “The Amazing Spider-Man”

February 20, 2012 | Posted by Linda Ge in Videos Leave a comment

We’ve seen plenty of high action, huge special effects driven montages from Marc Webb’s “The Amazing Spider-Man”, but the filmmakers decided to go for something decidedly more human as the first full scene clip released from the film. Andrew Garfield loves being behind that mask Spider-Man, but here, it’s obvious his Peter Parker is slightly more vulnerable to dastardly adversaries. All he wants to do is go see his girl – Emma Stone as Gwen Stacy – but even the lowliest (and stoutest) of doormen can easily stand in his way.

Ok, so this clip is slightly less exciting than the trailers and previews that have come before it, but this movie remains one of our most anticipated of the year. “The Amazing Spider-Man” opens on July 3rd.
