“Zombieland” and “30 Minutes or Less” director Ruben Fleischer’s first foray into serious drama appears to be a success judging by the first trailer for 1940s mob actioner “Gangster Squad”, which you can now view below. Sean Penn stars in the true life tale as notorious mobster Mickey Cohen, a highly charismatic figure with a sociopathic dark side. Josh Brolin, Ryan Gosling and Anothny Mackie, among others, play cops who come in to try to take Cohen down, but according to the trailer, may find themselves treading back and forth across the thin blue line. Fleischer’s “Zombieland” leading lady Emma Stone looks right at home in the period setting, playing a “sharp tongued siren” involved with both Penn and Gosling.

Warner Bros recently pulled “Gangster Squad” from its original October 12, 2012 release date and has not set a new release date yet, but it’s widely believed it will be in front of moviegoers before the year is up. Meanwhile, you can watch the first trailer below.

First Look: Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone on the set of “Gangster Squad”

September 21, 2011 | Posted by Linda Ge in Images Leave a comment

Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone look the epitome of suburban domestic bliss in our first look at a scene being filmed on Ruben Fleicsher’s 1940s mob drama “Gangster Squad.” The two look perfectly at home and believable in 1940s garb for the “30 Minutes of Less” director’s first foray into serious drama, and appear altogether a different couple than the one they played in this summer’s charming romantic comedy “Crazy, Stupid, Love.”

Gosling and Stone are joined in the film by a stellar cast that is rounded out by Sean Penn, Josh Brolin and Anthony Mackie. In the Will Beall-scripted crime drama based on a true story, Penn will be notorious Los Angeles mobster Mickey Cohen, a charismatic figure who was also a bit of a celebrity, even being featured in a Life Magazine profile. But he was also considered a sociopath with a dark side, and Gosling and Brolin’s pair of cops are called in to put a stop to his dealings when innocent people start getting hurt. Mackie will play former LAPD lieutenant Rocky Washington. Stone plays a “sharp-tongued siren” who gets caught in a love triangle between Penn’s mobster and Gosling’s good guy though she seems pretty into the good guy in these first pictures.

Emma Stone to reuinte with Ryan Gosling in “Gangster Squad”

Looks like these guys can’t get enough of Emma Stone. The meteorically rising young actress is about to tread some familiar territory as she enters negotiations for “Gangster Squad”, a film that will reunite her not only with her “Zombieland” director Ruben Fleischer, who is helming the pic, but also with “Crazy, Stupid, Love” co-star Ryan Gosling, who is the star. Stone and Gosling will be joined in the 1940s drama by Sean Penn, Josh Brolin and Anthony Mackie.

Mackie will play former LAPD lieutenant Rocky Washington, while Stone, according to Variety’s Showblitz blog, is in talks to play a “sharp-tongued siren” who gets caught in a love triangle between Penn’s mobster and Gosling’s good guy.

She broke out on the scene with a supporting role in 2007′s “Superbad” but it was 2010′s “Easy A” that showed Stone had serious potential as a future A-Lister. She just wrapped up playing Gwen Stacy opposite Andrew Garfield in “The Amazing Spider-Man” for director Marc Webb and will next be seen showing off her dramatic chops in August’s “The Help”, based on the best-selling novel by Kathryn Stockett.

It’s always great to see someone from “The Hurt Locker” other than Jeremy Renner getting a well deserved career boost, so we are happy to report, via Variety, that Anthony Mackie has landed a pivotal supporting role in 1940′s set mob thriller “Gangster Squad” alongside Ryan Gosling, Sean Penn and Josh Brolin.

The 1940s crime drama will be directed by “Zombieland” helmer Ruben Fleischer.

Like Renner, Mackie’s star has been on the rise after starring in 2009′s Best Picture Oscar winner “The Hurt Locker”, the two even competing for the lead opposite Tom Cruise in “Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol”, with Renner eventually winning out. Mackie isn’t hurting for work either though, as “The Adjustment Bureau” star also recently wrapped “Man on a Ledge” opposite Sam Worthington and is currently shooting “Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter” in New Orleans. Along with “Gangster Squad”, Mackie is also reportedly being pursued for a role in zombie apocalypse thriller “World War Z” opposite Brad Pitt.

Ryan Gosling may be getting ready to tell Sean Penn to put ‘em up as the “Blue Valentine” star is in negotiations to play a cop pitted against opposite Penn’s mobster in “Gangster Squad”, reports Deadline. Joining Gosling on this side of the thin blue line will be Josh Brolin, who is also in talks to play a police officer.

The 1940s crime drama will be directed by “Zombieland” helmer Ruben Fleischer.

Gosling is a hot commodity in Hollywood at the moment, as he enraptured audiences with his performance in “Blue Valentine” and gears up to shoot the remake of “Logan’s Run”. He was sought for the title role in “The Lone Ranger” opposite Johnny Depp, but scheduling issues with “Logan’s Run” couldn’t be worked out. He recently wrapped up filming on George Clooney’s directorial venture “The Ides of March” and will head to Cannes next month for the premiere of “Drive”, his first collaboration with “Logan’s Run” director Nicolas Winding Refn. A foray into comedy in “Crazy, Stupid, Love” opposite Steve Carell and Emma Stone will hit theaters on July 29.
