New still for indie love story “Like Crazy” with Anton Yelchin and Felicity Jones

September 12, 2011 | Posted by Rebecca Lewis in Images Leave a comment

2011 was a big year for breakout female actresses, and especially so for British actress Felicity Jones.

Jones won the Special Jury Prize at this year’s Sundance Film Festival for her role as Anna in Drake Doremus’, Like Crazy, which follows the ups and downs of a relationship between a British student (Jones) and her American college sweetheart Jacob, played by Anton Yelchin, who are torn apart after Anna overstays her visa.

In this new still from Like Crazy (courtesy of MTV), we see the two lovers on a beach, before deportation and the complications of a long distance relationship.

In an exclusive interview with MTV, director Doremus explains how Jones, who was previously best known in Hollywood for her supporting role in Ricky Gervias’ Cemetary Junction, landed the role:

Felicity sent me a tape from London. I had seen about 50 girls in Los Angeles. I’d brought a few of them in with Anton and did the chemistry read, and I was not quite feeling it yet. She sent a tape of herself in her flat in London. She just embodied everything that was this character. I immediately called her and told her to come. It was a total gut call. I had never even seen her with Anton, and I didn’t even know if they’d have chemistry, but something in my gut told me we had to cast Felicity Jones and that she was the right person for this. And man, oh man, that’s probably one of the best decisions I’ve ever made in my career.

And sending that tape was probably one of the best decisions Jones ever made as well!

Like Crazy also stars Jennifer Lawrence and Charlie Bewley and opens in limited theaters on 28th October in the US, and February 3rd 2012 in the UK.

2011 Fall Movie Preview: Our 20 Most Anticipated

September 5, 2011 | Posted by Linda Ge and Rebecca Lewis in Features 15 Comments

2011 has already been a banner year for movies, with even the typically brainless summer blockbuster season bringing it in terms of quality, satisfying films for even the most die-hard film buffs. Just try to argue that the likes of “Bridesmaids”, “The Rise of the Planet of the Apes”, “Captain America” and “The Help” are not a huge notch above their counterparts from previous years. The best part? Studios have not even begun releasing their “best” movies yet. The prestige pictures, the Oscar contenders, the A-List of movies aren’t released until the latter half of the year, so it’s with great excitement that we present our 20 Most Anticipated Fall Films of 2011.

Nico Tortorella out, Matthew Daddario and Elise Eberle in for “Like Crazy” director’s next

August 16, 2011 | Posted by Linda Ge in Casting Leave a comment

Matthew Daddario has replaced Nico Tortorella in director Drake Doremus’ untitled follow-up to his Sundance Grand Jury Prize winning “Like Crazy”, reports Variety. Elise Eberle is also in negotiations to join the ensemble cast led by Felicity Jones, Guy Pearce and Amy Ryan.

The film centers around a high school teacher (Pearce), who begins contemplating cheating on his wife (Ryan) with a student (Jones). Tortorella had been in negotiations for the role of Aaron, the campus ladies man, but despite all efforts, his schedule on currently-filming “Odd Thomas”, in which he plays the main villain, could not be worked around. Daddario had previously been cast as Aaron’s best friend but will now be bumped up to the bigger role. Eberle will a play a friend of Pearce and Ryan’s daughter, a role she auditioned for but which ultimately went to newcomer Mackenzie Davis. Doremus co-wrote the script with Ben York and plans on shooting it semi-improvisational style, just as he did on “Like Crazy”.

Daddario, brother of “Percy Jackson” actress Alexandra Daddario, only has commercial acting experience under his belt and will be making his feature film debut here. Eberle recently completed indie dramedy “As Cool As I Am” with Claire Danes and Hugh Dancy.

Mackenzie Davis and Nico Tortorella join Felicity Jones in “Like Crazy” director’s next

Mackenzie Davis and Nico Tortorella have joined the cast of Drake Doremus’ sophomore directorial vehicle, reports Variety. The untitled film reunites Doremus with his “Like Crazy” star Felicity Jones, and also stars Guy Pearce and Amy Ryan.

Pearce plays a high school teacher who is tempted to cheat on his wife (Ryan) with one of his students (Jones). Newcomer Davis will play Pearce and Ryan’s daughter while “Scream 4″ star Tortorella will play a ladies man on the high school campus. Doremus will direct from a script he wrote with Ben York Jones, but like the “Crazy” cast, the actors will be asked to improvise.

Davis only has one TV movie and one short from 2011 under her belt, while Tortorella made his screen debut in 2009 on the CW’s short-lived series “The Beautiful Life”. After a breakout role opposite Emma Roberts in “Scream 4″, Tortorella is currently filming the villain role opposite Anton Yelchin in “Odd Thomas”.

Anton Yelchin and Felicity Jones are young and in love in the first trailer for Sundance Grand Jury prize winner “Like Crazy”, set for release on October 28, 2011. In the Drake Doremus directorial debut, Jones is a British college student who falls for her American classmate. When she decides to overstay her student visa in order to spend the summer with him, she’s banned from returning after she leaves for home, thus separating the young lovers indefinitely.

One of our most anticipated movies of the year, “Like Crazy” should have a real shot at awards season, in particular for Jones, who was awarded a Special Jury Prize for her acting at Sundance as well. The first trailer from the film, as well as the poster, are below.

Sundance hit “Like Crazy” gets Oscar friendly release date

April 19, 2011 | Posted by Linda Ge in General News Leave a comment

The biggest winner to come out of Sundance – it took the Grand Jury Prize and a special jury prize for star Felicity Jones’ performance – “Like Crazy” will be released on October 28, 2011, smack dab in the middle of Awards season. It was snapped up after a bidding war upped the price to $4 million by Paramount Vantage, the art house and awards-friendly arm of Paramount that put out past Oscar nominees and winners like “No Country for Old Men”, “Babel”, “Into the Wild” and “Revolutionary Road”.

“Like Crazy”, directed by Drake Doremus and shot improvisational style, stars Jones and Anton Yelchin as a young couple who fall in love during college but are separated after graduation when she overstays her Visa and is unable to return to America after going home to Britain. Months and years pass while the two struggle to be together and let love be enough when they are separated by thousands of miles, time differences and immigration laws. Last year’s Sundance darling Jennifer Lawrence has a supporting role as a great girl Jacob attempts to move on with but inevitably can’t measure up to the one that got away.

The reviews from Sundance were unequivocally positive and the film’s early buzz has already translated into doors opening for its young stars, with Jones being shortlisted for one high profile project after another, including “Snow White and the Huntsman” and “The Seventh Son”, while Yelchin will next tackle the title role in “Odd Thomas”, adapted from the best-selling novels by Dean Koontz.

Anton Yelchin will talk to ghosts in “Odd Thomas”

After a huge 2009 and a quiet year off in 2010, Anton Yelchin is poised to make a splash once again as he starts off 2011 with the biggest hit of Sundance – indeed, its Grand Jury Prize Winner – “Like Crazy”, the remake of “Fright Night” and Jodie Foster’s highly anticipated “The Beaver” set for release around the corner and most likely preparing to shoot JJ Abrams’ sequel to one of his monster hits of 2009, “Star Trek” sometime soon. Today he adds one more potential franchise to his resume as Shock ‘Til You Drop reports that Yelchin is the first cast member to join Stephen Sommers’ adaptation of Dean Koontz’s “Odd Thomas”.

Though STYD doesn’t specify, it’s logical to presume Yelchin will be taking on the title role of a 20-year-old fry-cook who can see ghosts. He can talk to them, but they cannot speak to him, so they must, essentially, get their message to him charades-style. He uses the hints they give him to solve mysteries and prevent disasters. Koontz has written four novels, each with its own stand-alone Odd Thomas adventure that also continues an overreaching character arc, and has stated there would be seven total; he already knows how it all ends. The first book centers around Odd Thomas and his girlfriend, Bronwen “Stormy” Llewellyn, racing against the clock to prevent a mass murder in their small town.

Sommers is in pre-production on the project, which he adapted and will direct. No word on when filming might begin or any other cast additions.

Sundance falls for long-distance love story “Like Crazy”

January 23, 2011 | Posted by Linda Ge in General News, Interviews, Reviews, Videos 1 Comment

Sundance has fallen hard for Drake Doremus’ “Like Crazy” (another of our most anticipated Sundance movies), the long-distance relationship drama that was so buzzed and loved that a bidding war between Paramount, Summit and Fox Searchlight started right in the lobby after the premiere screening. Eventually, Paramount proved victorious for a reported $4mil and will have the lucky task of distributing to the general public the first major hit of Sundance 2011.

Starring the crazy talented Anton Yelchin and Felicity Jones and shot entirely in improvisational style, the story follows the American Jacob and the British Anna, who fall in love their senior year of college and then are separated when she decides to overstay her Visa to spend the summer with him, rendering her unable to return to the US after she leaves for home in Britain.
