“Glee” star Lea Michele may reprise Broadway role for “Spring Awakening” moive

Before she became a household name on Fox series “Glee”, Lea Michele was a rising star on the Broadway stage after originating the female lead role of Wendla in hit musical “Spring Awakening.” Well, it should come as no surprise that as director McG gears up to adapt the musical for the big screen, he is keen to get Michele to reprise her role – schedule permitting.

He tells E! Online, “We’re talking to Lea Michele because she made the role of Wendla famous and we’ll see if that pans out and works with the timing of her schedule on [Glee]. I love Lea; we’ve talked about it. When I first got turned onto the show she was in it so it’s her voice that echoes in my heart. I really think she’s wonderful and we’ll see where it takes us.” Of course, now 26, Michele is a bit older than the 14 year old character she played when she was younger, but stranger castings have happened. The musical, based on the controversial 1892 play of the same name by Frank Wedekind, follows teenagers in 19th century Germany as they come of age and discover their sexuality and features music by Duncan Sheik.

Michele recently lost out on the role of Eponine in Tom Hooper’s big screen adaptation of musical “Les Miserables” and appeared in Gary Marshall’s ensemble rom-com “New Year’s Eve.” She will next be heard lending her voice to the titular character in animated Wizard of Oz film “Dorothy of Oz.”

Scarlett Johansson, Evan Rachel Wood, Lea Michele and Taylor Swift vying to play Eponine in “Les Miserables”

November 30, 2011 | Posted by Linda Ge in Casting 17 Comments

An eclectic and unexpected (to put it lightly) shortlist has emerged from the ongoing casting of Tom Hooper’s big screen adaptation of blockbuster musical “Les Miserables.” According to The NY Post, Scarlett Johansson, Evan Rachel Wood, singer Taylor Swift and “Glee” star Lea Michele are vying for the role of the tragic street urchin Eponine.

Fans and even non-fans of the musical know Eponine is a pivotal character in the second act of the story, and more importantly, sings perhaps the most famous song from the musical, “On My Own.” This means the actress chosen must be able to sing her butt off, and each of the four actresses in contention certainly can sing, but are they up to the task of singing the demanding music of Claude-Michel Schönberg? The decision appears to be completely up in the air still, with sources telling NY Post that while Michele “knocked it out of the park” at her audition, Johansson “brings acting ability, and she can really sing” and Wood “brings her indie cred.”

The inclusion of Swift is odder than most, with the singer not exactly proving her acting chops in her first big movie role in Gary Marshall’s ensemble rom-com “Valentine’s Day.” Michele can and has sung Broadway, but her acting, also, doesn’t seem quite up to par with the all-star cast of Hugh Jackman, Russell Crowe, Anne Hathaway, and more importantly, Eddie Redmayne, whose Marius will be Eponine’s scene partner for most of her time on screen. If it must be out of these four young ladies, we have to heavily favor Wood (great acting and a perfect Eponine singing voice) and, to a lesser extent, Johansson (great acting with slightly lesser musical ability). The other two just seem completely off the mark.

Meanwhile, rumors indicate filmmakers are having a hard time locking down a famous actress to play Cosette, and have widened the field to audition unknown actresses/singers. Rehearsals begin in January and filming in March. Looks like we’ll get our full cast sooner rather than later.

Josh Duhamel joins Gary Marshall’s “New Year’s Eve”

Gary Marshall’s “New Year’s Eve” party just keeps getting bigger. Josh Duhamel is the latest actor to RSVP his attendance, as The Wrap reports today. Seth Meyers and Jon Bon Jovi jumped on board a couple of days ago, joining the already enormous cast that includes Halle Berry, Jessica Biel, Abigail Breslin, Robert De Niro, Zac Efron, Ashton Kutcher, Lea Michele, Sarah Jessica Parker, Michelle Pfeiffer, Hilary Swank and Sofia Vergara.

The film follows intertwining lives and romantic escapades of a large group of New Yorkers over the course of one New Year’s Eve. It’s a follow-up to the commercially successful “Valentine’s Day”, Marshall’s first holiday-themed large ensemble romantic comedy, but the characters of “New Year’s Eve” will have no relation to that film, as evidenced by crossover cast members Biel and Kutcher playing new roles in the new film.

Duhamel, a soap opera veteran, made the sometimes difficult transition into more mainstream roles first becoming a regular on NBC’s “Las Vegas”, then playing Major William Lennox in Michael Bay’s “Transformers”, a role which he will reprise in this summer’s “Transformers: Dark of the Moon”. He’s also no stranger to (bad) romantic comedies, having brought us such gems as “When in Rome” and “Life As We Know It”.

Seth Meyers RSVPs for Gary Marshall’s “New Years Eve”

January 24, 2011 | Posted by Linda Ge in Casting 2 Comments

“Saturday Night Live” head writer and Weekend Update anchor Seth Meyers is the latest cast member added to Gary Marshall’s “New Years Eve”, reports THR. Singer Jon Bon Jovi will also join the already announced cast that includes Halle Berry, Jessica Biel, Abigail Breslin, Robert De Niro, Zac Efron, Ashton Kutcher, Lea Michele, Sarah Jessica Parker, Michelle Pfeiffer, Hilary Swank and Sofia Vergara.

With the new casting report also comes some plot details, as Bon Jovi will play a rock star who shares a romantic history with Berry’s character and comes face to face with her at an NYE party. Meyers will play a broke dad who finds himself in a heated competition as he tries to coax his wife (Biel) into delivering the first baby of the year in order to win $25,000.

The film is set to be released on December 9, 2011 with no start date yet. Meyers seems to be making a foray into feature films as he also recently signed on to “I Don’t Know How She Does It”, with Sarah Jessica Parker, currently filming in NYC.

Sienna Miller travels to NYC for “New Year’s Eve”

We’re running out of puns here! British beauty Sienna Miller is the latest to join the large ensemble cast of Gary Marshall’s “New Year’s Eve”, the follow-up to the similarly holiday themed romantic comedy “Valentine’s Day”. Miller joins a cast that already includes Jessica Biel, Abigail Breslin, Lea Michele, Ashton Kutcher, Sarah Jessica Parker, Michelle Pfeiffer, Zac Efron and Hilary Swank, according to Variety.

The film follows interweaving romantic tales of several New Yorkers over the course of one New Year’s Eve, and while Kutcher and Biel were in “Valentine’s Day”, they will be playing new characters as it’s not a sequel or a spin-off of the first film in any way. “New Year’s Eve” has no start date yet but will be released on December 9, 2011.

Miller, an It Girl on the verge several years ago, seemed to hit a stagnant note in her career and hasn’t been seen on screen since 2009′s “GI Joe: The Rise of Cobra”. She is currently filming Nick Cassavetes’ “Yellow” opposite Ben Foster.

Jessica Biel joins “New Year’s Eve”; not a sequel to “Valentine’s Day”

December 8, 2010 | Posted by Linda Ge in Casting 1 Comment

Jessica Biel is the latest actor to join the large ensemble cast of Gary Marshall’s romantic comedy that follows interweaving romantic lives of New Yorkers on New Year’s Eve. Biel first starred as an unlucky in love career gal in Marshall’s “Valentine’s Day”, the holiday-themed ensemble romantic comedy from which “Eve” is spun, but she will not be portraying the same character this time, reports Variety. The rest of the cast thus far include Hilary Swank, Robert DeNiro, Lea Michele, Michelle Pfeiffer and Ashton Kutcher, who was also a part of “Valentine’s Day”. Going by the cast of its predecessor, we can expect many more big name actors to jump on board as the project comes together.

Biel was most recently seen in “The A-Team” and is currently filming “The Tall Man”. “New Year’s Eve” has not started filming but already has a release date of December 9, 2011, just in time for New Year’s.

Ashton Kutcher joins “New Year’s Eve”; Will he reprise his “Valentine’s Day” role?

November 8, 2010 | Posted by Linda Ge in Casting Leave a comment

After starring as hopeless romantic Reed Bennett in Gary Marshall’s “Valentine’s Day”, Ashton Kutcher is set to star in the spin-off “New Year’s Eve”, joining previously announced Abigail Breslin and Lea Michele. The Hollywood Reporter reports that Robert DeNiro, Michelle Pfeiffer and Hilary Swank are also joining the ever-growing cast.

The movie will portray interweaving stories of New Yorkers over the course of one New Year’s Eve. DeNio will play a bitter, dying man in a hospital. Pfeiffer will play an executive secretary who feels stuck and decides to seize the day, Swank will be a producer of a New Year’s Eve show, and Kutcher will play a man who hates New Year’s Eve. Breslin and Michele’s roles remain unspecified.

The question remains whether Kutcher will be reprising his role from “Valentine’s Day”. Quite frankly, his and Jennifer Garner’s story was my favorite from the first movie, so if he will once again be playing Reed, my hope is Garner will jump on board as well.

Kutcher can next be seen in No Strings Attached opposite Natalie Portman.

Abigail Breslin makes plans for “New Year’s Eve”

November 2, 2010 | Posted by Lindsey Young in Casting 1 Comment

According to Variety, 14-year old Abigail Breslin is currently in talks to join the cast of “New Year’s Eve,” a spinoff film to Garry Marshall’s romcom “Valentine’s Day.”

Following in the footsteps of “Valentine’s Day,” “New Year’s Eve” will follow a series of characters and their romantic entanglements over the course of the last day of the calendar year. The film will include multiple storylines and feature an ensemble cast which reportedly thus far includes Glee’s Lea Michele.

There is no word on any details regarding the character Breslin has her eye on, nor have any production dates been set in stone, but the film has been given a December 9, 2011 release date by New Line.

Breslin recently starred in “Janie Jones” and can next be heard in the animated “Rango,” which hits theatres on March 4, 2011.
