catchingfireposter001 Filming hasn’t even completed yet, but the viral marketing for sequel “The Hunger Games: Catching Fire” is a go. Today two versions of the first poster for the film, designed as Victory Tour posters which fit inside the plot of the story itself, have been released featuring Jennifer Lawrence as Katniss and Josh Hutcherson as Peeta. HitFix released one, and the newly rebranded official Facebook the other.

The Victory Tour Katniss and Peeta embark on take place at the beginning of “Catching Fire”, following (spoiler alert?) their unprecedented victory in their first Hunger Games, which took place in the first film directed by Gary Ross. Francis Lawrence takes over directing duties for the sequel – and will direct the rest of the films in the series – which will see Kantiss and Peeta thrown back into another life or death competition, collecting new friends and foes along the way. Sam Claflin nabbed the coveted role of Finnick, while Jena Malone joins the cast as Johanna.

“The Hunger Games: Catching Fire” will be released on November 22nd. The new posters can be viewed below, with probably more items to whet your appetite coming soon.

First images of Jennifer Lawrence and Sam Claflin as Katniss and Finnick in “The Hunger Games: Catching Fire”

UPDATE: New images of Liam Hemsworth as Gale and Josh Hutcherson as Peeta have been added.

Oh yeah, “The Hunger Games” is still a thing. In just ten short months, “The Hunger Games: Catching Fire”, which will see the return of Jennifer Lawrence’s teen heroine Katniss Everdeen, will be released, and today EW has our first look at Lawrence and newcomer Sam Calflin, who plays fan favorite Finnick.

The two, wearing futuristic wetsuits and wielding their signature weapons – Katniss with her bow and arrows, Finnick with his trident – cover the magazine’s new issue, which also unveils a rather intimate moment between the two as the movie’s first official still. As fans of the book now and as director Francis Lawrence is now translating to screen, Finnick is a bit of a flirt who teases and flusters the usually level-headed Katniss, who he meets when they are both chosen to compete in the Quarter Quell, an anniversary edition of the Hunger Games that pits previous victors against one another. We’re not sure yet if Claflin is pulling off that sexy side of his character, but it’s still early yet, with filming only having wrapped recently in Hawaii. No images in sight just yet of returning characters like Josh Hutcherson as Peeta, Liam Hemsworth as Gale, Elizabeth Banks as Effie, or other newcomers like Jena Malone as Johanna Mason, Finnick’s cunning and fearless partner.

“The Hunger Games: Catching Fire” will be released on November 21, 2013, and the first two images of Lawrence and Claflin can be viewed below.

“The Hunger Games” star Josh Hutcherson joins Benicio Del Toro in Pablo Escobar Drama “Paradise Lost”

Peeta Mellark, meet Pablo Escobar. Deadline reports that “The Hunger Games” star Josh Hutcherson is in negotiations to join Benicio Del Toro in a movie about the famous Colombian drug lord, marking the young actor’s first film since joining the lucrative teen franchise.

“Paradise Lost”, not to be confused with the abored Alex Proyas biblical epic that had been working under the same name, follows Hutcherson’s young Irish surfer as he visits his older brother in Colombia. There, he falls for a girl and then meets her uncle, Del Toro’s Escobar.

Filming under the direction of Andrea di Stefano will begin in March, after Hutcherson wraps up “The Hunger Games: Catching Fire.” Unlike his co-stars who’ve all leveraged their newfound fame for bigger and better roles, Hutcherson has laid low since hitting the jackpot in the worldwide phenomenon “The Hunger Games”, and has only committed to a second sequel to the “Journey to the Center of the Earth” franchise, which he first starred in pre-”Games.” He was seen earlier this year in the “Red Dawn” remake, which was also first filmed pre-”Games.” He’ll next lend his voice to animated family film “Epic.”

First look at Sam Claflin and Josh Hutcherson on the set of “The Hunger Games: Catching Fire”

It’s among the most anticipated of sequels and today Celebuzz has unveiled the first photos from the set of “The Hunger Games: Catching Fire”, featuring two fan-favorite characters getting to work. Josh Hutcherson has demonstrably gone back to blonde to play Peeta Mellark, and we also finally have our first glimpse of what British actor Sam Claflin will bring to the role of Finnick Odair.

What can we glean from these photos? Well, not much, except that Claflin’s Finnick, like his ocean-loving book counterpart, may be spending much of his time shirtless. No sighting yet of Jennifer Lawrence, who unveiled her brunette Katniss locks in Toronto last week, or Liam Hemsworth as Gale (hair color: indeterminate). Elizabeth Banks, Woody Harrelson, Lenny Kravitz and the rest are all returning, and will be joined by newbies including Jena Malone, Philip Seymour Hoffman and Jeffrey Wright.

Francis Lawrence took over directing duties on “Catching Fire” from Gary Ross, and it’s set for a November 23, 2013 release. See the first photos of Claflin and Hutcherson below and head over to Celebuzz for many more.

Sam Claflin confirmed for Finnick in “The Hunger Games: Catching Fire”

August 22, 2012 | Posted by Linda Ge in Casting 1 Comment

After two months of rumor and speculation, British actor Sam Claflin has finally been officially confirmed for the role of Finnick Odair in “The Hunger Games: Catching Fire.” Claflin joins returning stars Jennifer Lawrence, Josh Hutcherson and Liam Hemsworth, as well as new addition Jena Malone in the second installment of the massively popular teen dystopian franchise.

Finnick was a hotly contested role, and everyone had an opinion (including us), but in the end it wasn’t up to the fans, but the filmmakers and particularly director Francis Lawrence. Claflin will now do his best to embody the charismatic, noble and broken Hunger Games victor from District 4 who becomes an invaluable ally to Lawrence’s Katniss. Will Claflin succeed? We certainly have our doubts, but are eagerly anticipating the film nonetheless. Filming begins imminently and the film is already set for a November 23, 2013 release. Elizabeth Banks, Woody Harrelson, Lenny Kravitz and most of the gang from the original film will return, and other new additions include Philip Seymour Hoffman, Lynn Cohen and Meta Golding.

Claflin, while a newcomer, is already no stranger to the franchise game. He got his big break playing opposite Johnny Depp in “Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides”, then romancing Kristen Stewart in “Snow White and the Huntsman.” Neither really put him on the map, so will it be third time’s a charm with “Catching Fire”? Judging by how madly these fan loves their stars, we are betting on yes.

The search for “Catching Fire”‘s Finnick down to Armie Hammer, Garrett Hedlund and Taylor Kitsch?

May 29, 2012 | Posted by Linda Ge in Casting 4 Comments

It’s just about that time. With “The Hunger Games” sequel “Catching Fire” set to film this fall (and rehearsals beginning as soon as July), fans – us included – have been waiting with baited breath to hear news of who will be joining Jennifer Lawrence, Josh Hutcherson, Liam Hemsworth and the rest of Panem’s citizens, with one character at the forefront of everyone’s minds: Finnick Odair, the handsome, charming District 4 victor who becomes one of Katniss’s most trusted allies throughout the two remaining sequels. Today, E! Oline reveals that the top three contenders currently “being bantered about” at Lionsgate are familiar and popular names that have come up in many discussions among fans: Armie Hammer, Garrett Hedlund and Taylor Kitsch.

E! Online’s sources go on to say that filmmakers are also keeping an eye out for a discovery of an unknown, ala Brad Pitt in “Thelma and Louise.” Not a bad goal to strive for. Furthermore, an official announcement could come as soon as this week.

If you ask us, any of the three would be terrific in the role, and we said as much here in an open letter to new director Francis Lawrence. Sorry for the exclusion, Mr. Kitsch, purely an oversight, we can assure you. However, Kitsch may have already taken himself out of the running, if we believe an MTV interview from earlier this year during “John Carter” press rounds. In any case, this shortlist, whether it ends up being any of the three, is a good indication that filmmakers’ view of the much beloved character is very much in line with fans’.

“The Hunger Games: Catching Fire” has already been set for a November 23, 2013 release so the real Finnick should be unveiled sooner rather than later. And then can we talk about Johanna Mason?!

Dear Francis Lawrence, here’s who you should cast as Finnick Odair in “The Hunger Games” sequel “Catching Fire”

April 20, 2012 | Posted by Linda Ge in Features 89 Comments

Now that the circus of deciding who will be directing “The Hunger Games” sequel “Catching Fire” is finally over (in case you haven’t heard: “Hunger Games” director Gary Ross is out, and “Water for Elephants” director Francis Lawrence landed the coveted job), we can move on to more fun speculation about who might play some of the fan-favorite characters that begin showing up in the sequel.

We could begin nowhere else but with Finnick Odair, the 24 year old former Hunger Games victor from District 4 who becomes one of Katniss’s most important allies and closest friends. He’s also incredibly charming and attractive, so that helps too. Finnick won the games when he was 14 through his expert use of a trident. With District 4 being by the sea, Finnick is also a great swimmer, with bronzed skin and tousled copper hair, but don’t be mistaken that he’s just a pretty face. Finnick has a dark past and uncertain future, just like every citizen of Panem, and his value to Katniss as they grow closer is indispensable.

With that in mind, we’ve compiled a list of five young actors who have demonstrated all the strength and charm and swagger and heartbreaking sadness that would make them more than suited to join Jennifer Lawrence, Josh Hutcherson and Liam Hemsworth and step into Finnick’s shoes. See our choices below and do leave us your suggestions in the comments!

Watch: Jennifer Lawrence shows off Katniss’ archery skills in first clip from “The Hunger Games”

March 1, 2012 | Posted by Linda Ge in Videos 1 Comment

We are just about three weeks away from the release of the highly anticipated Gary Ross teen bestseller adaptation “The Hunger Games” and today the first scene clip from the film has been unveiled. It features, what else, Jennifer Lawrence as Katniss, forcibly impressing a room with her perfect archery skills. Taking place in the training center where all 24 children Tributes get a chance to practice their various survival skills before heading into the arena to fight each other to the death, Katniss is given an opportunity to impress the gamemakers in charge of the event. So she does what she does best but when they totally miss it in all their self-absorbed gluttony, she takes it to another level.

Tipped to be “the next Twilight” and gearing up to make international superstars out of Lawrence, Josh Hutcherson and Liam Hemsworth, “The Hunger Games” is currently on track to make as much as $100 million on its opening weekend of March 23rd. So maybe Lionsgate weren’t jumping the gun when they set a release date for the sequel, “Catching Fire”, as early as last August. This franchise seems unstoppable at this point, and we are just as eager as the millions of you to see it for ourselves.

Watch the first clip below.
