Striking first poster for baseball biopic “42″ featuring Chadwick Boseman as Jackie Robinson

The responsibility of starring in the first biopic of the year featuring an iconic historical figure goes to newcomer Chadwick Boseman, who will be seen as Jackie Robinson, the first African American player in Major League baseball, when the Brian Helgeland-directed “42″ hits theaters on April 12th.

The first poster for the film – which also stars Nicole Beharie as the eventual Mrs. Robinson, Rachel Isum and Harrison Ford as Brooklyn Dodgers general manager Branch Rickey – has been released and it’s a visually striking homage to Robinson’s legacy. Boseman beat out a plethora of fellow relative unknown actors to land the role of a lifetime, including recent Sundance breakout and “Fruitvale” star Michael B. Jordan and “Stomp the Yard”‘s Columbus Short, so let’s hope audiences haven’t been soured on baseball movies by that Clint Eastwood-Amy Adams dud “Trouble with the Curve.” This one looks much better.

The first poster for “42″ can be viewed below.

“Shame” star Nicole Beharie to play Mrs. Jackie Robinson in biopic “42″

Nicole Beharie, who played the one woman who inspired real feelings in Michael Fassbender’s troubled sex addict in Steve McQueen’s cinematic masterpiece “Shame” last year, will be playing the love of baseball legend Jackie Robinson’s life in biopic “42″, according to Deadline. She will be acting opposite relative newcomer Chadwick Boseman, who landed the role of Robinson in December, and Harrison Ford as Brooklyn Dodgers general manager Branch Rickey.

Brian Helgeland will direct the film, which he wrote in collaboration with Robinson’s widow, Rachel Robinson (a younger version of whom, as Rachel Isum, Beharie will play in the movie). The story follows Robinson, who was the first African American player in Major League baseball. Rickey is credited for breaking the color barrier in the sport of baseball by signing Robinson first to a minor league team in 1945, and then, more famously, to the Brooklyn Dodgers in 1947.

Beharie had only done two movies prior to her breakout turn in “Shame”, one of which was “The Express”, also starring Boseman, about the first African-American football player, Ernie Davis (played by Rob Brown), to win the Heisman Trophy. She has one more sports-themed movie, “The Last Fall”, awaiting release this year.

Newcomer Chadwick Boseman to play Jackie Robinson in biopic “42″ opposite Harrison Ford

It’s a home run for relative unknown actor Chadwick Boseman’s first major starring role in a feature film. Legendary Pictures has chosen the actor for the iconic role of baseball legend Jackie Robinson in biopic “42″, according to Variety. For his first major leap to the big screen, Boseman will share the screen with film vet Harrison Ford, who is also in negotiations to play Brooklyn Dodgers general manager Branch Rickey. Boseman beat out several fellow young rising stars for the highly coveted role of Robinson, among them “Friday Night Light”‘s Michael B. Jordan and “Stomp the Yard”‘s Columbus Short.

Brian Helgeland will direct the film, which he wrote in collaboration with Robinson’s widow, Rachel Robinson. The story follows Robinson, who was the first African American player in Major League baseball. Rickey is credited for breaking the color barrier in the sport of baseball by signing Robinson first to a minor league team in 1945, and then, more famously, to the Brooklyn Dodgers in 1947.

Boseman, an award-winning playwright, has stuck almost entirely to television in his acting career thus far, appearing in guest spots on every show from “Third Watch” to “Lincoln Heights” to “Fringe” and “ER.” On film, he also appeared in “The Express”, about the first African-American football player, Ernie Davis (played by Rob Brown), to win the Heisman Trophy.
