Guy Pearce Menaces Robert Pattinson in First Still from “The Rover”

March 13, 2013 | Posted by Linda Ge in Images Leave a comment

theroversm Things are looking bloody and grim for Robert Pattinson in the first official image released from David Michod’s futuristic thriller “The Rover.”

Via Entertainment Weekly, we have our first look at Pattinson bloodied and apparently being threatened at gunpoint by Guy Pearce. Not that Pearce doesn’t have good reason. In a grim near-future set in the aftermath of a financial collapse, Pearce’s character finds something very important stolen from his car, and catches Pattinson’s thief as his group flees with the goods and leaves him behind. As the two set off to find the group and retrieve what was stolen, Michod gives some intriguing details of the dynamic between the two men: “You’ve got a really dark, dangerous, murderous person in Guy’s character, and in Rob’s character you have a quite troubled and damaged, but beautiful and naïve, soul.”

See the first official photo of “The Rover” below. It has no release date yet and shooting is still ongoing in Australia.

New images show Robert Pattinson with yellow teeth and a buzz cut for “The Rover”

roverheader

With the “Twilight” franchise well and truly finished, Robert Pattinson is finally free to move on from Edward Cullen for good – and set pictures from his new film “The Rover” show a very different Pattinson. With a buzz cut, fake yellow teeth and facial hair, the British actor looks to be settling in to filming alongside Guy Pearce (“Lawless”) in David Michod‘s futuristic drama.

Pattinson stars as Reynolds, one of a dangerous gang of criminals who steal Eric’s (Pearce) last possession in this threatening new future. When Eric pursues them across the outback, he encounters Reynolds who has been left behind injured, and enlists his help in finding his possession. The film also stars Scoot McNairy as Reynolds’s brother, as well as Gillian Jones and Anthony Hayes.

Pattinson has a busy few years ahead of him following his meteoric rise to fame thanks to the role of Edward Cullen in Summit’s adaptation of the Stephanie Meyer novels. The “Twilight” franchise was a worldwide phenonemon but Pattinson has made smart career decisions, ensuring he isn’t pigeon-holed. Last year he premiered the David Cronenberg pic “Cosmopolis” at Cannes Film Festival, and later this year will begin shooting Jean-Stéphane Sauvaire’s “Mission Blacklist”, playing the man who spearheaded the capture of Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein. He will also play a young Lawrence of Arabia in Werner Herzog’s “Queen of the Desert” and join Carey Mulligan in crime drama “Hold On To Me“.

Rosamund Pike joins Guy Pearce in Australian marriage drama “Violet Town”

November 28, 2012 | Posted by Rebecca Lewis in Casting Leave a comment

Despite being a Bond girl and playing supporting roles in two Oscar nominated films, Rosamund Pike has yet to blow up in Hollywood. That may soon change as Deadline reports the British actress is set to take a lead role opposite Guy Pearce in Australian adaptation “Violet Town“.

Based on Steven Carroll’s novel The Art Of The Engine Driver and adapted for the big screen by Matt Cameron, “Violet Town” is set in 1950s Melbourne and follows a married couple at a New Years Eve party. What should be a fun night out soon becomes something else, as long buried secrets are unearthered.

The book is part of a trilogy but no word on if the production company plan to make any further films. Mark Joffe will direct.

Pike has a strong screen presense and first came to our attention in 2005′s “Pride and Prejudice” alongside Kiera Knightley. Previously starring with Pierce Brosnan on “Die Another Day“, she has also worked with Ryan Gosling in “Fracture” and Carey Mulligan in “An Education“. We’ll soon see a lighter side to Pike as she has two comedies lined up, including the currently filming “The World’s End“, the conclusion to Edgar Wright’s Three Flavours Cornetto Trilogy. Next up for the actress is the Tom Cruise-starrer “Jack Reacher” and “The Long Way Down” with Aaron Paul and Imogen Poots.

Scoot McNairy joins “The Rover” with Robert Pattinson and “Frank” opposite Michael Fassbender

Scoot McNairy’s career continues on an upward swing, as Deadline reports the “Argo” actor has landed two intriguing upcoming projects, David Michod’s futuristic Australian thriller “The Rover”, already starring Guy Pearce and Robert Pattinson, and rock n roll comedy “Frank”, which has Michael Fassbender and rising star Domhall Gleeson attached.

“The Rover” sees Pearce as a a man who pursues a group of thieves through the Australian outback after they steal something valuable from his car. Pattinson would play one of the thieves. Michod also wrote the script based on an idea he conceived with “Animal Kingdom” star Joel Edgerton. “Frank” has Fassbender as the leader of an eccentric rock band, and Gleeson will find himself in over his head when he joins the group. Lenny Abrahamson will direct from a script by Jon Ronson and Peter Straughan. No word on who McNairy will play in either film just yet.

McNairy began gaining notice after a breakout turn in Gareth Edwards’ low budget surprise hit thriller “Monsters”, and he recent earned acclaim playing one of the hostages in Ben Affleck’s Oscar hopeful “Argo.” He’ll next be seen opposite Brad Pitt in Andrew Dominik’s “Killing Them Softly” and has wrapped up shooting on Steve McQueen’s “Twelve Years a Slave”, also opposite Fassbender. Not slowing down for a bit, McNairy is currently shooting in-flight actioner “Non-Stop” with Liam Neeson and Julianne Moore.

Watch: second trailer for John Hillcoat’s violent “Lawless” starring Tom Hardy and Shia LaBeouf

July 10, 2012 | Posted by Rebecca Lewis in Videos Leave a comment

John Hillcoat‘s “Lawless” was one of our favorite Cannes films, a vivid and violent film, but also a fun, genuine pleasure to watch.

Tom Hardy, Jason Clarke and LaBeouf star as the Bondurant boys, three brothers raising hell in Prohibition era Virgina. Based on a true story and adapted from Matt Bondurant’s ‘The Wettest County in the World”, when the boys get into the business of bootlegging, they run into some nefarious gangster foes including Guy Pearce and an especially sinister Gary Oldman. And they’ve got girl problems too, coming in the forms of Mia Wasikowska and Jessica Chastain.

Gearing up for a late August release, a second official trailer has been released this past weekend, showcasing to audiences more of the violence that was seen in the first trailer, but also focusing a little more on Shia LaBeouf and Mia Wasikowska’s relationship.

You can catch the trailer below the cut and let us know what you think of the film when it is released in the US on August 29th.

Cannes REVIEW: John Hillcoat’s vivid and violent “Lawless” is a genuine pleasure to watch

May 21, 2012 | Posted by Rebecca Lewis in Reviews 3 Comments

John Hillcoat’s “Lawless”, an adaptation of Matt Bondurant’s ‘The Wettest County in the World’ is a vivid but violent film that tells the tale of three Bondurant brothers in Franklin, Virginia during the prohibiton era of the 1930s. Star Shia LaBeouf called it “messy, dirty, realistic … that’s the way Hillcoat does his violence”, and this will certainly be one of the bloodiest films you’ll see all year.

Based on a true story, the film follows Howard Bondurant (Jason Clarke), who returned from the Great War affected by what he had seen, middle brother Forrest (Tom Hardy) who believes his own invincibility after surviving Spanish Flu, and the youngest Jack (LaBeouf), a sensitive but smart young man who desperately wants to be as brave as he believes his brothers are. The Bondurants have built a thriving business in the area selling their Moonshine but their fraternal bond is soon complicated by the arrival of corrupt Special Deputy Charlie Rakes (played by the deliciously evil Guy Pearce) and two young women, Maggie (Jessica Chastain) who has a secret past and catches the eye of guarded Forrest, and pious Bertha (Mia Wasikowska) whom Jack wants to court; and also by Jack’s decision to start his own bootlegging operation with best friend Cricket (Dane DeHann).

James Badge Dale lands pivotal villain role in “Iron Man 3″ opposite Robert Downey, Jr.

The Marvel universe continues to get infused with fresh blood as new faces join the steadily forward marching Avengers franchise. Rebecca Hall was the latest to sign on to star opposite Robert Downey, Jr. in “Iron Man 3″, and today Variety reports James Badge Dale will also get the distinction of becoming part of the Marvel family, joining the film in a pivotal villainous role.

Shane Black will begin directing the second sequel to the saga of Tony Stark, and Dale will be joining the likes of “Iron Man” veterans Gwyneth Paltrow and Don Cheadle, as well as fellow Marvel newbies Guy Pearce and Ben Kingsley in the impressive cast. Pearce and Hall play scientists who discover the the virus called Extremis, which forces the human brain to rewire itself into becoming stronger. They hope to send it to the US military, but it ends up in enemy hands instead. Dale’s Eric Savin is a Lieutenant Colonel in the U.S. Army who is reborn as the cyborg Coldblood after dying on the battlefield. Kingsley will be the “Big Bad” villain, though the specifics of his role are still under wraps. Filming is set to begin this month with a release date already set for May 3, 2013.

After years on television and in small film roles, Dale is lining up a very interesting and steadily rising film career. Dale was last seen on screen opposite Michael Fassbender in Steve McQueen’s “Shame” and alongside Liam Neeson in survivalist thriller “The Grey.” His upcoming slate is even more impressive, having wrapped in “Flight” opposite Denzel Washington, Marc Forster’s zombie apocalypse thriller “World War Z” and currently filming Gore Verbinski’s “The Lone Ranger” opposite Johnny Depp and Armie Hammer.

Robert Pattinson in negotiations for David Michod’s “The Rover” with Guy Pearce

May 3, 2012 | Posted by Linda Ge in Casting 3 Comments

Big news day for Robert Pattinson fans! He’s got a new movie, North American distribution for “Cosmopolis”, and now he can add perhaps his most interesting role choice to date to that list. Variety reports Pattinson is in negotiations to join Guy Pearce in “Animal Kingdom” director David Michod’s “The Rover.”

Michod directed 2010′s Australian feature “Animal Kingdom” to international acclaim, and has reunited with star Pearce on a film about a man who pursues a group of thieves through the Australian outback after they steal something valuable from his car. Pearce plays the man, while Pattinson would play one of the thieves. Filming is scheduled to begin this fall in Australia. Michod also wrote the script based on an idea he conceived with “Animal Kingdom” star Joel Edgerton.

Pattinson recently wrapped up the final “Twilight” installment “Breaking Dawn: Part II”, which will be released this November, and is headed to Cannes later this month for his starring role in David Cronenberg’s “Cosmopolis.” He was just recently confirmed to be starring in Iraq War drama “Mission: Blacklist” about the intelligence team that hunted down Saddam Hussein.

UPDATE: Jessica Chastain will NOT star in “Iron Man 3″ opposite Robert Downey, Jr.

April 23, 2012 | Posted by Linda Ge in Casting 1 Comment

05/07/12 UPDATE: According to Chastain herself, she is too busy and will be unable to take on this role. The search continues…

Now that she’s proven her acting chops in smaller, more serious roles and landed an Oscar nomination to boot, Jessica Chastain is ready to tackle a tentpole/franchise. And she’s picked a doozy as Deadline reports the actress is in talks to take on a starring role in Marvel’s “Iron Man 3″ opposite Robert Downey, Jr.

Chastain is circling the role of a smart (but, of course, sexy) scientist who goes toe to toe with Tony Stark. The role had been offered to her but it seemed like scheduling conflicts would force her to pass. The studio began meeting with other young actresses including Diane Kruger, Isla Fisher and Gemma Arterton, but when Chastain’s schedule cleared up, she is looking like the one who will ultimately win out after all. Chastain will join Downey, Gwyneth Paltrow, Don Cheadle, Scarlett Johansson and fellow newbie Guy Pearce as geneticist Aldrich Killian.

The film is said to be based on Warren Ellis’ “Extremis” storyline from the Marvel comics, and it seems to reason that Chastain will be playing Maya Hansen, a colleague of Killian’s with whom she develops the Extremis virus, which forces the human brain to rewire itself into something stronger. The scientists hope to send it to the US military, but it falls into the hands of terrorists instead and Hansen teams up with Stark to stop it.

Chastain starred in an unbelievable six films in 2011, including Cannes Palme D’Or winner “The Tree of Life”, Jeff Nichols’ Sundance hit “Take Shelter” and Civil Rights era drama “The Help”, which ultimately won her her first Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actress. She is currently filming Kathryn Bigelow’s Bin Laden military thriller “Zero Dark Thirty” and will then reunite with co-star Joel Edgerton on “The Disappearance of Eleanor Rigby: His and Hers.”

Joel Edgerton out, Rooney Mara, Tom Hardy and more in for Kathryn Bigelow’s “Kill Bin Laden”?

November 10, 2011 | Posted by Linda Ge in Casting 4 Comments

Australian actor Jason Clarke is the first actor to officially sign on for Kathryn Bigelow’s follow-up to 2009′s Oscar-winning “The Hurt Locker”, an untitled film about Navy SEALs involved in the killing of Osama Bin Laden, according to Deadline. This is curious, though, because we’ve thought all these months that Clarke’s “Great Gatsby” co-star Joel Edgerton had been set for the lead. It appears Edgerton is now out, perhaps a consequence of his increasingly busy shooting schedule, and Clarke is in. Others who are being eyed for supporting roles include Tom Hardy, Rooney Mara, Guy Pearce, Jennifer Ehle, Idris Elba and Nina Arianda.

The film is currently untitled but had been known under the working title of “Kill Bin Laden.” Clarke will play the leader of a special operatives group on the self-explanatory mission. Though the initial idea was to chronicle a real-life 2001 mission to kill the now-deceased Al-Qaeda leader that ultimately failed, the film will now include the actual killing of Bin Laden following his fate in real life. It’s curious to see so many actresses being eyed for roles, as the actual Navy SEALs themselves will surely be comprised of all guys. Could such talented actresses – who seem to number the men just about equally – be relegated to love interest/worried wife status? Perhaps in a lesser director’s hands, we need to be more worried.

Clarke appears to have a bit of a breakout moment on the horizon as he appears in John Hillcoat’s “The Wettest County in the World”, Baz Luhrmann’s “The Great Gatsby” and now Bigelow’s film. Mara is about to hit superstardom when David Fincher’s “The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo” releases next month and she’s already working on her next project, Terrence Malick’s “Lawless” opposite Ryan Gosling. Hardy broke out in Christopher Nolan’s “Inception” and is reuniting with the director on “The Dark Knight Rises.” He’s also somewhat of an Oscar dark horse for his performance in MMA family drama “Warrior.”
