Gael Garcia Bernal will star as five-time world boxing champion Roberto Duran in “Hands of Stone”. Al Pacino is also circling the role of Duran’s trainer Ray Arcel. Duran debuted on the boxing circuit in 1968 at the age of 16, and after defeating Sugar Ray Leonard, famously said “no mas” during the rematch in November 1980.
“The infamous ‘no mas’ fight is the biggest enigma in the history of boxing. This movie will answer that enigma,” director Jonathan Jakubowicz tells Variety. “Hands of Stone”, named for Duran’s nickname, will shoot mainly in English in Duran’s hometown of Panama and New York next spring.
Bernal was most recently seen in “Letters to Juliet” and will next star opposite Kate Hudson in “A Little Bit of Heaven” while continuing to mix up his repertoire with both English and Spanish movies.
