Sam Claflin, Douglas Booth Confirmed for “Posh”; Holliday Grainger Also In?

May 19, 2013 | Posted by Linda Ge in Casting 3 Comments

claflin-booth UPDATE: We somehow missed this report from last month, but Britain’s The Daily Mail reports “The Borgias” actress Holliday Grainger is in talks for one of the few female roles in the film, while Emma Watson also met with the director but ultimately couldn’t take a different role. Daily Mail also updates Robert Pattinson has passed on the project.

ORIGINAL ARTICLE: The gang’s almost all here. After initial reports of negotiations in March, British actors Sam Claflin (“The Hunger Games: Catching Fire”) and Douglas Booth (“Jupiter Ascending”) have now officially joined Max Irons (“The Host”) in Lone Scherfig’s adaptation of Laura Wade’s 2010 play “Posh”, according to THR. Filming begins next month.

Laura Wade’s 2010 hit play of the same name concerned The Riot Club, a fictional version of The Bullingdon Club, an exclusive society at Oxford University to which such prominent British figures as Prime Minister David Cameron belonged. The entire play is set over the course of one evening when the ten members of the club have their termly dinner. As their President, James, considers leaving his post, the other boys jocky for position, leading to tragic consequences.

Claflin is in Cannes promoting “The Hunger Games: Catching Fire”, in which he plays fan favorite character Finnick Odair. He previously appeared in “Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides” and “Snow White and the Huntsman.” Booth will next appear opposite Hailee Steinfeld in Carlo Carlei’s new adaptation of “Romeo and Juliet” and is currently filming the Wachowskis’ sci-fi epic “Jupiter Ascending.”

Watch: Douglas Booth and Hailee Steinfeld Are Your New “Romeo and Juliet” In First Trailer

We expect during promo rounds for this movie, Hailee Steinfeld and Douglas Booth will spend a great amount of time speaking of their admiration for Baz Luhrmann’s 1996 version of Shakespeare’s classic “Romeo and Juliet” and how they’re in no way trying to top it, and judging from the first trailer for Carlo Carlei’s new take on the tragic romance, they’d be wise to make that clear up front.

Forget Luhrmann’s modern twist on the tale, Carlei’s vision clearly takes much more after Franco Zeffirelli’s 1968 traditionally set film, which is still a classic, and which is perhaps partly the reason why this looks so uninspired. Everyone, from Booth as Romeo and Steinfeld as Juliet to “Gossip Girl” star Ed Westwick as Tybalt and Paul Giamatti as Friar Lawrence, looks the part in their lush costumes and questionable hair pieces, and are speaking the Bard’s words (as abridged by “Downton Abbey” creator Julian Fellowes), but there’s nothing here that says this is a definitive and new “Romeo and Juliet” for a new generation, which Carlie said he wanted to make.

Perhaps it’s too soon to tell and the teenagers discovering this tale for the first time from the 2013 film will be moved the same way Luhrmann’s film moved me in 1996. In any case, the British kids will get to see it first, on July 26th, while there’s no word yet on a US release. For now you can watch the first trailer below.

“The Host” Star Max Irons Confirmed for “Posh”

March 17, 2013 | Posted by Linda Ge in Casting Leave a comment

max-irons “The Host” star Max Irons is the first actor to be confirmed to be joining Lone Scherfig’s adaptation of hit play “Posh”, according to THR. On Friday Irons, Sam Claflin, Douglas Booth and Robert Pattinson were first reported to be in various stages of discussions with the production about taking four of the ten or so roles available.

THR also echos the original report that Pattinson, out of all the actors, is the least solidified, indicating “he’s being circled more than he’s circling” the project. No word on who Irons will play, though we initially heard he is in talks for one of the lead roles.

The son of legendary actor Jeremy Irons, the younger Irons has quickly racked up a teen heartthrob reputation thanks to roles in Catherine Hardwicke’s “Red Riding Hood” fairy tale redo opposite Amanda Seyfried and the upcoming alien invasion action romance “The Host” opposite Saoirse Ronan, based on “Twilight” author Stephenie Meyer’s novel. He recently wrapped up filming on BBC miniseries “The White Queen”, which will premiere later this year.

Robert Pattinson, Max Irons, Sam Claflin and Douglas Booth In Talks for “Posh”

posh Make room for the new Brit Pack. Some of the hottest rising British actors are in various stages of negotiations for “An Education” director Lone Scherfig’s adaptation of play “Posh”, with The Daily Mail reporting “Twilight”‘s Robert Pattinson, “The Hunger Games”‘ Sam Claflin, “The Host”‘s Max Irons and “Jupiter Ascending” star Douglas Booth are just four of the names being bandied about.

An adaptation of Laura Wade’s 2010 hit play of the same name, Irons, Pattinson, Claflin and Booth would play members of The Riot Club, a fictional version of The Bullingdon Club, an exclusive society at Oxford University to which such prominent British figures as Prime Minister David Cameron belonged. The entire play is set over the course of one evening when the ten members of the club have their termly dinner. As their President, James, considers leaving his post, the other boys jocky for position, leading to tragic consequences. Daily Mail reports Irons is being sought for one of the lead roles, while Pattinson is still in very early talks and also mulling over other projects.

Irons, son of Jeremy Irons, was last seen in “Red Riding Hood” and will soon appear opposite Saoirse Ronan in “The Host”, so he could probably use a film such as this, which will show off more serious acting chops. Pattinson was the original Stephenie Meyer heartthrob, having originated Edward Cullen to screaming fans in “Twilight” in 2008 and only wrapped up the five film series last November. he’s moved on to much more interesting projects, including the currently filming David Michod thriller “The Rover.”

Claflin is one of our Faces to Watch in 2013, mostly because “The Hunger Games: Catching Fire” may test once and for all whether he has blockbuster leading man potential (his past blockbuster roles in “Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides” and “Snow White and the Huntsman” were rather lackluster). Booth, the only one without a YA novel franchise adaptation under his belt, will be seen as one half of the titular “Romeo and Juliet” opposite Hailee Steinfeld later this year and is now filming the Wachowskis’ “Jupiter Ascending” with Channing Tatum and Mila Kunis.

Tuppence Middleton joins the Wachowskis’ “Jupiter Ascending” opposite Channing Tatum and Mila Kunis

tuppence-middleton British actress Tuppence Middleton is rounding out the cast of the Wachowskis’ “Jupiter Ascending”, according to Variety. She joins Channing Tatum, Mila Kunis, Eddie Redmayne, Sean Bean and Douglas Booth in the sci-fi epic.

The film is set in a world where human beings are at the bottom of the food chain. Far superior beings keep an eye on the lowly homo sapiens from far away, and the story centers on Kunis as a Russian immigrant who’s scrubbing toilets for a living, unknowingly carrying some powerful genetic DNA makeup that make her a threat to the literal Queen of the Universe. A bounty hunter (Tatum) is dispatched to kill her, but the two fall in love and go on the run together instead. There’s no word yet on who any of the supporting actors are playing. Filming will begin this spring.

Middleton, still a relative unknown in Hollywood, has been busy in the UK and has wrapped up shooting on Iain Softley’s “Trap for Cinderella” opposite fellow British rising star Alexandra Roach, Danny Boyle’s heist thriller “Trance” and Nick Hornby adaptation “A Long Way Down” opposite Aaron Paul and Imogen Poots.

Douglas Booth joining Channing Tatum and Mila Kunis in the Wachowskis’ “Jupiter Ascending”

douglas-booth British rising star Douglas Booth is the latest to join the cast of the Wackowskis’ next sci-fi epic, “Jupiter Ascending”, according to Variety. He joins already onboard cast members Channing Tatum, Mila Kunis, Eddie Redmayne and Sean Bean.

The film is set in a distant future (or alternate reality) where human beings are no longer the most evolved creatures in the universe, but rather “just the Cro-Magnons, or even the Australopithecines, of what beings can ultimately go on to become in the galaxy.” Far superior beings keep an eye on the lowly humans from far away, and the story centers on Kunis as a Russian immigrant who’s scrubbing toilets for a living, unknowingly carrying some powerful genetic DNA makeup that make her a threat to the literal Queen of the Universe. A bounty hunter (Tatum) is dispatched to kill her, but the two fall in love and go on the run together instead.

Booth recently wrapped up playing Russell Crowe’s son in Darren Aronofsky’s biblical epic “Noah.” He’ll be seen this year as Romeo opposite Hailee Steinfield in Carlo Carlei’s new adaptation of Shakespeare’s “Romeo and Juliet” and played Pip in a recent BBC miniseries adaptation of Charles Dickens’ “Great Expectations.”

UPDATE: Douglas Booth, Eddie Redmayne, Sam Claflin and Boyd Holbrook testing for “The Amazing Spider-Man 2″

November 19, 2012 | Posted by Linda Ge in Casting 3 Comments

UPDATE: According to THR, Booth is indeed testing for Harry Osborn, along with “Les Miserables” actor Eddie Redmayne, “Pirates of the Caribbean”‘s Sam Claflin and “The Host” star Boyd Holbrook. THR also states Webb is now seeking an athletic, good looking Harry and the initial shortlist of DeHaan, Alden Ehrenreich and Brady Corbet is now defunct, though this doesn’t explain why DeHaan was taking a meeting with the filmmakers alongside Booth. More as this story develops…

ORIGINAL STORY: Maybe. Fans over at Comic Book Movie spotted Andrew Garfield and Harry Osborn hopeful Dane DeHaan heading into “The Amazing Spider-Man 2″ director Marc Webb’s house with scripts (and lunches) in hand along with another unidentified young actor. Well, the comment section identified that young actor as British up and comer Douglas Booth, who was not mentioned on the original shortlist for Harry, but who clearly has something to talk about with Webb and Garfield.

CBM believes the three will be having screen tests for the Harry Osborn role, but we can’t help but wonder: Who brings a salad to a screen test? And in even further over-analyzing these photos, both DeHaan and Booth are carrying salads in. Surely Webb and Garfield wouldn’t have two Harry hopefuls over at the same time (aca-awkward), nor would they have lunch twice just to be polite, so could it be that DeHaan and Booth are not up for the same role at all? Not being a huge Spider-Man history buff, I have no idea if there is another significant role for a young actor besides Harry Osborn, but perhaps a more well-informed reader could let us know.

Emma Watson to reunite with “Perks” co-star Logan Lerman on Darren Aronofsky’s “Noah”

June 7, 2012 | Posted by Linda Ge in Casting 1 Comment

UPDATE: Variety reports Dakota Fanning was Aronofsky’s first choice, but had to pass when scheduling conflicted with upcoming flick “Very Good Girls.”

“The Perks of Being a Wallflower” co-stars Logan Lerman and Emma Watson are set to share the screen again (the trend continues), according to Deadline. Watson is now in negotiations to join the cast of Darren Aronofsky’s biblical epic “Noah”, while Lerman a couple of days ago, along with British actor Douglas Booth.

Russell Crowe stars as Noah, who built an ark and piled it up with two of every animal. Booth plays his youngest son, Shem, and Lerman plays middle son Ham. The eldest, Jepeth, still needs to be cast as well as his love interest. Watson will play Ila, who “develops a close relationship with Shem.” Aronofsky wrote the original draft of the script and John Logan wrote the latest. Filming begins soon.

Watson and Lerman play Sam and Charlie in “The Perks of Being a Wallflower”, which is released on September 14th. The “Harry Potter” alum was last seen in “My Week with Marilyn” and recently wrapped up Sofia Coppola’s “Bling Ring.” She’s playing herself in Seth Rogan’s “The End of the World”, and is attached to psychological drama “Your Voice In My Head.”

Logan Lerman and Douglas Booth to play sons of Russell Crowe’s titular “Noah” in Darren Aronofsky’s bibical epic

June 4, 2012 | Posted by Linda Ge in Casting 4 Comments

Darren Aronofsky has cast Logan Lerman and Douglas Booth to play the sons of Russell Crowe’s titular “Noah” in his biblical epic, according to Deadline. The search is now on for Noah’s wife, with Jennifer Connelly in the mix, and the film’s villain, as well as roles for two more young actors: Noah’s eldest son Jepeth and his love interest.

Lerman will play middle son Ham, while Booth will play the youngest, Shem. Described as a big fantasy epic, the film will allow Aronofsky to create a whole new world around the biblical character who was asked by God to build an ark and load it up with two of every animal in preparation for an impending apocalyptic flood. Aronofsky wrote the original script and John Logan rewrote. Filming is set to begin this summer.

Booth recently wrapped up playing Romeo opposite Hailee Steinfield in Carlo Carlei’s new adaptation of Shakespeare’s “Romeo and Juliet” and played Pip in a recent BBC miniseries adaptation of Charles Dickens’ “Great Expectations.” Lerman is currently shooting the sequel “Percy Jackson and the Olympians: Sea of Monsters”, and will next be seen in “The Perks of Being a Wallflower.”
