First Official Still of Natalie Portman in Terrence Malick’s “Knight of Cups”

May 15, 2013 | Posted by Linda Ge in Images Leave a comment

knightofcupssm The first official image from Terrence Malick’s “Knight of Cups” is basically what we’d expected it to be, based on set photos from about a year ago. THR has the first photo of Natalie Portman and Christian Bale frolicking in the waves, and reports footage from the secretive auteur’s latest will be screened for potential buyers at Cannes this week.

The film is now said to be about celebrities and excess, while it had been previously reported that Bale plays a man “on a search for love and truth.” Not that the two are mutually exclusive, of course. In addition to Portman, Bale was also photographed filming very similar beach frolicking scenes with a variety of young actresses including Imogen Poots, Freida Pinto, Teresa Palmer and Isabel Lucas. The film also stars Cate Blanchett.

See the first photo of Portman and Bale in “Knight of Cups” below. It has no US distributor just yet.

Jack Huston Joins Jennifer Lawrence in David O. Russell’s Abscam Drama

March 26, 2013 | Posted by Linda Ge in Casting Leave a comment

jack-huston David O. Russell’s newest film has already been shooting for a couple of weeks now, but one last cast member is jumping on board, with Deadline reporting “Boardwalk Empire” star Jack Huston has joined Christian Bale, Bradley Cooper, Amy Adams, Jeremy Renner and Jennifer Lawrence in the 1970s set political thriller.

The untitled film, originally called “American Bullshit”, will follow the real life political drama Abscam, which was set up by the FBI in the 1970s and 80s. An FBI employee posed as a fictional Middle Eastern sheik named Kraim Abdul Rahman, who was videotaped taking meetings with government officials in which they agreed to take money for helping him gain asylum in the US, among other illegal activities. The investigation culminated in the conviction of a United States Senator and five members of the House of Representatives. Various cast members have been spotted around the Boston area dressed in their best 70s garbs – including Lawrence with this amazing updo – shooting the film which already has an Oscar-friendly December 13th release date.

Huston, who plays scarred and mask Richard Harrow on HBO’s “Boardwalk Empire”, recently premiered Beat Generation origin tale “Kill Your Darlings”, in which he plays Jack Kerouac, at Sundance. He most recently completed work on edgy art world dramedy “Posthumous” opposite Brit Marling.

Jeremy Renner replaces Christian Bale, joins Bradley Cooper in David O. Russell’s next

Two of the busiest, most sought-after leading men are set to share the screen at last. Variety reports Jeremy Renner is in negotiations to join Bradley Cooper in director David O. Russell’s next untitled drama, formerly working under “American Bullshit.” Christian Bale had previously been slated to star opposite Cooper but fell out.

The film will follow the real life political drama Abscam, which was set up by the FBI in the 1970s and 80s. Cooper will play Mel Weinberg, a con artist who was forced into doing undercover work for the FBI to catch corrupt political officials. Renner will play the FBI agent who busts him and turns him into an ally. The Abscam investigation ultimately culminated in the conviction of a United States Senator and five members of the House of Representatives, all of whom were videotaped making illegal deals with the undercover Weinberg. A February 2013 start date is scheduled.

Renner, who recently appeared in “Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol” and “The Avengers”, has one more blockbuster actioner to go this year, “The Bourne Legacy”, in which he takes the mantle from Matt Damon as an amnesiac government operative gone rogue. He has also wrapped up filming on fairy tale revision “Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters” and an untitled drama opposite Marion Cotillard and Joaquin Phoenix.

First look at Isabel Lucas on the set of “Knight of Cups” with newest unannounced cast addition Teresa Palmer

Imogen Poots, Freida Pinto, and now Teresa Palmer. Terrence Malick is checking young actresses off one by one as he films them frolicking on the beach with Christian Bale for his new film, “Knight of Cups.” Today we have our first look at Palmer in the waves, just like her predecessors, this time joined by an actual previously announced cast member, fellow Aussie Isabel Lucas, thanks to Just Jared.

Unlike her predecessors, Palmer is seen in the arms of Bale’s frequent beach buddy, Wes Bentley, while Lucas takes the road more traveled by strolling hand-in-hand with Bale, like Pinto and Natalie Portman before her. Thus far Palmer is the only lady seen with Bently, so could this mean her chances of showing up in Malick’s final cut are higher than her counterparts? Hard to say without any semblance of a plot or release date in sight. Bale, Portman and Cate Blanchett will move on with Malick this fall to music-centric romance “Lawless” with Ryan Gosling, Haley Bennett and Rooney Mara, but no word if any of the frolicking beach bunnies will join them as well.

See the photos of Palmer and Lucas below and head over to Just Jared for more. Which young actress will be wooed in the waves next? Felicity Jones? Brit Marling? Amanda Seyfried seems like a safe bet too. Leave us your guesses!

Freida Pinto the latest to be romanced by Christian Bale in set photos from Terrence Malick’s “Knight of Cups”

June 27, 2012 | Posted by Linda Ge in Casting, Images Leave a comment

It seems Natalie Portman and Imogen Poots are just not enough for Christian Bale. In Terrence Malick’s “Knight of Cups”, Bale plays a man “on a search for love and truth”, and apparently what that entails is wooing one beautiful young lady after another. His latest conquest: “Slumdog Millionaire” star Freida Pinto.

The new photos really don’t give us any new insight into what the film is about, other than Bale’s character gets around a lot, and should try to come up with some new places other than the beach to take his dates. In addition to Portman and Poots, Bale has also been seen filming with Cate Blanchett. There’s still one announced cast member unaccounted for via set photos, and that’s Australian actress Isabel Lucas.

See the new photos below and more of Bale and Pinto over at The Playlist, who also have new shots of Bale frolicking with Wes Bentley. Who will we see pop up on the beach with Bale next?

Set photos reveal Imogen Poots also part of Terrence Malick’s “Knight of Cups” with Christian Bale

June 12, 2012 | Posted by Linda Ge in Images 1 Comment

Terrence Malick’s new movies continue to get curiorser and curiorser. Notoriously secretive, it was a miracle Malick allowed anyone to release cast lists and titles at all for his two upcoming back-to-back features, “Lawless” and “Knight of Cups”, which is now filming in LA. From the sole press release, we know Christian Bale, Natalie Portman and Cate Blanchett would be part of both films, and that Haley Bennett, Ryan Gosling and Rooney Mara would join them for the former, while Aussie actress Isabel Lucas is part of the latter.

Well, now new photos from the set of “Knight of Cups” seem to reveal a new cast member that had been kept under wraps for whatever reason, and it’s British rising star Imogen Poots, here sporting punk-rock black hair with yellow streaks and an all black ensemble – something we’ve noticed is a bit of a trend on this pair of movies. Bale and Poots look decidedly less romantic in these shots than he has previously with Portman and Bennett, so it’s unclear what the relationship is here, though we do know he plays a man on a search for “love and truth.” Gee, can they vague that up for us? Similarly, “Lawless” is about love as well, two intersecting love triangles to be precise. And while they share much of the same cast and set photos from both films seem way too similar to be coincidental, it’s (tentatively) believed the two films are stand-alones.

See the new photos of Poots shooting with Bale below, courtesy of The Playlist, and be sure to head over there for more.

First Look: Natalie Portman romanced by Christian Bale on the beachside set of Terrence Malick’s “Knight of Cups”

May 31, 2012 | Posted by Linda Ge in Images 6 Comments

New mom/Oscar winner Natalie Portman is back at work and today we have our first look at the actress on the beach in Malibu, filming a playful and romantic scene with Christian Bale for Terrence Malick’s “Knight of Cups.” British newspaper The Daily Mail snapped photos of the two playing in the waves, holding hands and being downright adorable in the highly secretive film that’s only the first of two that Malick will shoot back to back this summer and fall.

Naturally, very little is known about each film, and while Malick maintains they will be standalone features, “Knight of Cups” and follow-up, (the previously titled) “Lawless”, feature much of the same cast and similar themes. Bale, Portman, Cate Blanchett, Wes Bentley and Isabel Lucas star in “Knight of Cups” described as one man’s search for love and truth, while Bale, Portman and Blanchett will also go on to star in “Lawless” with Ryan Gosling, Rooney Mara and Haley Bennett, which revolves around two intersecting love triangles set against the backdrop of the Texas music scene. And hey, are we seeing one of those intersecting love triangles being formed already?

We are probably still a long ways away from getting any solid answers, so for now, check out the new photos of Bale and Portman below and hit up The Daily Mail for a bunch more. We can only assume “Knight of Cups” may be slated for sometime in 2013. Malick’s still got “To the Wonder” (with Ben Affleck, Rachel McAdams, Olga Kurylenko, etc) to release first.

Anne Hathaway, Tom Hardy and Joseph Gordon-Levitt take center stage in third trailer for “The Dark Knight Rises”

April 30, 2012 | Posted by Linda Ge in Videos Leave a comment

The villains take center stage in the third trailer for Christopher Nolan’s final Batman movie, “The Dark Knight Rises”, as Anne Hathaway as Catwoman, Tom Hardy as Bane and Joseph Gordon-Levitt as police officer John Blake, who may have a deeper connection to the villainous icons than earlier thought, are featured prominently in the newest round of promos. The trio of newcomers to the franchise take the spotlight in the latest trailer as Gotham seems on the brink of utter collapse and Christian Bale as Bruce Wayne is kept largely in the shadows (and largely out of costume).

“The Dark Knight Rises” opens on July 20th. It will be Nolan’s last turn behind the director’s chair but Warner Bros is reported to be interested in continuing the franchise, with Nolan staying on in other creative capacities. Watch the newest trailer for the “Epic Conclusion” of the trilogy below.

Bradley Cooper may reunite with David O. Russell for “American Bullshit” opposite Christian Bale

April 18, 2012 | Posted by Linda Ge in Casting 1 Comment

Sounds like Bradley Cooper really enjoyed working on “The Silver Linings Playbook.” He’s already working with co-star Jennifer Lawrence on a new movie, “Serena”, and now he’s in talks to reunite with director David O. Russell as well. Deadline reports Cooper is now in negotiations to join the cast of “American Bullshit”, with another Russell alum, Christan Bale, already attached to star.

The film will follow the real life political drama Abscam, which was set up by the FBI in the 1970s and 80s. A January 2013 start date is tentatively scheduled, with director and stars all committed to other projects between now and then.

Cooper is currently in Prague with Lawrence filming 1920s thriller “Serena” under the direction of Susanna Bier. In September he’ll return one last time to the role that made him famous in the threequel to “The Hangover.” And while Woody Allen’s next film had been rumored to take place in Copenhagen with Cooper attached to star, the location was quickly debunked (Allen will shoot in San Francisco instead); it’s unclear if Cooper’s involvement is also off the table.

“District 9″ star Sharlto Copley in early talks for Spike Lee’s “Oldboy” opposite Josh Brolin and Elizabeth Olsen

April 12, 2012 | Posted by Linda Ge in Casting Leave a comment

Third time was the charm for landing Elizabeth Olsen as the leading lady in Spike Lee’s remake of Korean horror classic “Oldboy” (Rooney Mara and Mia Wasikowska both said no), will the same work for the villain? After Christian Bale and Clive Owen passed on the chance to torment Josh Brolin, the filmmakers are turning to South African actor Sharlto Copley. Variety reports Copley has been offered and is now in early talks to play the film’s mysterious villain.

Brolin plays a man who goes on a quest for answers and revenge after he emerges from a hotel room after fifteen years of imprisonment without any knowledge of why or who put him there. Copley will be the mysterious billionaire responsible for the aforementioned fifteen years of imprisonment and torture. While the female lead had formerly been described as a chef (just like in the Korean film), Variety’s new report indicates Olsen will actually be playing a casemaker who helps Brolin investigate his past.

Copley made his feature film debut in “District 9″, which went on to be nominated for an Oscar for Best Picture, and then quickly lined up American roles in the remake of “The A-Team”, in which he played Murdock opposite Bradley Cooper, and a reunion with “District 9″ director Neil Blomkamp in sci-fi epic “Elysium”, the plot of which is still tightly under wraps despite filming having concluded several months ago. Before taking on “Oldboy” – if he takes on “Oldboy” – Copley will head to Hungary in May to shoot Gonzalo Lopez-Gallego’s “Open Grave.”
