There’s a feeling of the vampire stories of old in today’s newly released “Byzantium” trailer, as we witness secrets being kept and told over the centuries, gorgeous period costumes, and the occasional murder.
Saoirse Ronan stars here as Eleanor Webb, an eternal sixteen year old who meets and befriends Caleb Landry Jone’s Frank in a sleepy English coastal town that she is hiding out in with her mother Clara (Gemma Arterton). Eventually Eleanor lets Frank in on her secret – changing their lives forever. There is also plenty of backstory given to us here, featuring Sam Riley as, what appears to be, a vampire hunter, and this generally looks like a welcome return for director Neil Jordan, who bought Tom Cruise’s vampire to life in the 90s classic “Interview with a Vampire” and has stayed away from monsters ever since.
The pic premiered at last year’s Toronto International Film Festival and has been making the festival rounds, preparing for a June 28th release date in the US.

So it looks like whatever Joseph Gordon-Levitt does next, it won’t be the reboot of “Godzilla”, to be helmed by indie breakout filmmaker Gareth Edwards. Despite an initial report from THR that Gordon-Levitt is amongst a select few potential leading men being considered for the lead role, they now update that Gordon-Levitt has already passed. Which is good news for he other guys on the list, who are, according to a Variety reporter, Henry Cavill, Scoot McNairy and Caleb Landry Jones.
There’s apparently some disagreement on who would be the best guy to fend off the iconic Japanese giant monster, with reports indicating the bigger names like Gordon-Levitt and Cavill are studio choices (more bankable, etc) while McNairy and Jones, lesser known, have shown great dramatic chops and are the choices of Edwards and the creative team. No official offers have gone out yet, with the script now being given a final polish by Frank Darabont, but a March start date is scheduled, so we could be finding out sooner rather than later who will lead the fight against Godzilla.
McNairy would seem to have a leg up on the competition, as he and Edwards broke out together in 2010′s low budget sci-fil thriller “Monsters”, and he certainly has seen a rise to his profile, especially after having a breakout year in 2012. Jones has blockbuster experience after playing Banshee in “X-Men: First Class”, but has stuck mostly to indies, most recently with two movies at the Toronto International Film Festival, Brandon Cronenberg’s “Antiviral” and Neil Jordan’s “Byzantium.” And while Cavill is a “studio choice”, it’s certainly unfair to downplay his talents, which he honed on four seasons of “The Tudors” before becoming Zack Snyder’s Superman and “Man of Steel” and gently nudged over to the “bankable” column.

She may look sweet and innocent, but Saoirse Ronan leaves no question about what she actually is in our first look at a scene from Neil Jordan’s “Byzantium.” The film premieres this Sunday at the Toronto International Film Festival, and also stars Gemma Arterton as Clara, Ronan’s charcter Eleanor’s mother/vampire sire, and Sam Riley as Darvell and Caleb Landry Jones as Frank, the human boys they cross paths with.
In this clip, Jones’ Frank has clearly injured his hand pretty badly and Eleanor helps him home to his parents. Eleanor is visibly tempted by Frank’s spilled blood that still lies around her on the floor, and as the family drive away to the hospital, she does something that really grossed me out. But hey, I’m a lightweight when it comes to this stuff. Check it out below for yourself.

Vampires are coming to Toronto, but when they look like Gemma Arterton and Saoirse Ronan, how bad could it be? Neil Jordan’s “Byzantium” was just announced this morning as a Special Presentation at this year’s Toronto International Film Festival and now new photos from the film have been released, which include our first looks at Arterton and Sam Riley (we’ve already seen the first image of Ronan, though there’s a couple of new ones of her here as well).
Previously trying to remain mysterious and described as “two mysterious and penniless young women who flee the scene of a violent crime and end up in a run-down coastal resort where the past they’ve been running from may finally catch up with them”, TIFF’s official description of the film is much more explicit, calling it a “deliciously depraved supernatural drama” about “a pair of female vampires (Saorsie Ronan and Gemma Arterton) [who wreak] havoc on an unsuspecting English seaside community.” Riley and Caleb Landry Jones are the two young, presumably human, men who get caught up in the mother-daughter duo’s web.
“Byzantium” has no distribution and no release date yet, though TIFF should rectify that. See the new photos below.

We’ve seen Caleb Landry Jones in a still from Brandon Cronenberg’s totally absurd and surreal sounding futuristic sci-fi thriller “Antiviral”, and today Twitch Film brings us our first look at leading lady Sarah Gadon in two new stills.
Cronenberg’s Cannes-bound Un Certain Regard selection revolves around Landry Jones’ Syd March, who works at a shady clinic that sells injections of celebrity diseases to obsessed fans. He also smuggles vials of the stuff to sell for his own profit off the books, and when he’s infected with the diseases that ultimately killed superstar Hannah Geist, he must solve the mystery of her death before it takes him too. Judging by the image of Gadon’s giant likeness plastered all over Syd’s walls, we have to assume she plays that late celebrity he becomes obsessed with.
“Antiviral”, which also stars Malcolm McDowell, Douglas Smith, Matt Watts and James Cade, has no distributors or release dates in place yet, though news should come soon as it gears up for its big splashy premiere on the Croisette next week. See the two new images below.

Saoirse Ronan sports a bright red hood and mysteriously bloodied fingers in the first still from Neil Jordan’s vampire flick “Byzantium”, which just wrapped up principal photography. Ronan was joined in the film by Gemma Arterton, Sam Riley and Caleb Landry Jones.
The film is now being vaguely summarized as revolving around “two mysterious and penniless young women who flee the scene of a violent crime and end up in a run-down coastal resort where the past they’ve been running from may finally catch up with them” but as we know, the two mysterious and penniless young women are actually mother and daughter, and oh yeah, vampires. Jones’ terminally ill teenager meets Ronan’s reluctant blooksucker and makes her question her way of life more than ever.
None of that is articulated in the first still, however. Deadline unveiled the image below earlier today, and no release date has yet been set.
