THR names Next Gen 2011: Lily Collins, Armie Hammer, Elizabeth Olsen, Jeremy Irvine and more

November 2, 2011 | Posted by Linda Ge in Features, Lists 2 Comments

Just like last year, in our estimation THR has picked some great names for their Next Gen Class of 2011. From indie darlings to future superheros and fairy tale princesses, THR has cast their vote for the fastest rising stars of the moment.

Indie stars represented are up from last year, and in a year that saw the stunning arrivals of Sundance breakouts Elizabeth Olsen, Felicity Jones, Adepero Oduye and Shailene Woodley, it’s well deserved. They each did one tiny little indie movie and find themselves, at year’s end, on the tip of the industry’s tongue, often in conjecture with the word “Oscar.” The movies are small, intimate and really showcase the impressive talent contained within these new performers. On the other, more “traditional” end of the spectrum, Lily Collins, Armie Hammer, Henry Cavill and Jeremy Irvine are tasked with carrying million/billion dollar franchises on their young, untested shoulders, and the real test of their A-List movie star potential remain on the horizon.

More new images of Lily Collins and Armie Hammer in “Snow White”

October 6, 2011 | Posted by Linda Ge in Images 4 Comments

Yesterday we posted the first images of Armie Hammer as Prince Andrew in Tarsem Singh’s super colorful and outlandish still untitled “Snow White” film and today a plethora of new images have been released, courtesy of EW, People and Yahoo! Movies. The costumes get bigger and more colorful and Lily Collins, it must be said, looks like a perfect Snow White, delicate and beautiful and always wearing a radiant smile, even in the midst of sword training.

Further details have also emerged from director Singh, who reveals that Julia Roberts as the Evil Queen won’t be outwardly evil at first. “She’s the cat that ate the canary,” he tells EW. “From serial killers to anyone who does evil deeds, they basically have a devil-made-me-do-it excuse, or they hear voices,” he continues. “I decided for the evil queen, this is going to be a person who sees her [good] self — but there’s a mirror personality.” When she sends her henchman Nathan Lane to take Snow White into the woods to be killed, he can’t do it and she takes up shelter with seven dwarfs, who make a living as bandits and wear stilts to appear gigantic when ambushing caravans. Kudos to Relativity for hiring real little people actors to play the dwarfs; the characters are still unnamed but they will be played by Jordan Prentice, Joey Gnoffo , Sabastian Saraceno, Collins, Martin Klebba, Mark Provinelli, Ronald Lee Clark and Danny Woodburn.

First Look: Prince Armie Hammer (and Evil Queen Julia Roberts) in Tarsem Singh’s “Snow White”

October 5, 2011 | Posted by Linda Ge in Images 4 Comments

The battle to be the fairest of them all rages on. Relativity continues to stay one step ahead of Universal in the tale of the dueling Snow Whites. While filming is still underway on Charlize Theron-Chris Hemsworth starrer “Snow White and the Huntsman”, today new looks at director Tarsem Singh’s still untitled “comedic adventure” take on the wayward Princess and her seven dwarf friends have been unveiled, giving us our first glimpse of Julia Roberts as a “relateable” Evil Queen and Armie Hammer’s dashing Prince Andrew, who attracts both princess and queen.

Back in July, the first image from the film was revealed, featuring Lily Collins in the titular role looking every bit the fantastical fairy tale princess and altogether a totally different creature from armor-clad Kristen Stewart snapped filming battle scenes as the same character on the “Huntsman” set last month. The new reveals of Hammer and especially Roberts fall right in line with Collins’ outrageously colorful look, and we’d expect no less from a true visionary and out-of-the-box director like Tarsem, who is outspoken about the fact that the look of a film matters much more to him than the content.

Roberts fan site About Juia snagged the first scans from the new issue of People Magazine (seen below) and the article suggests even more new images will be revealed soon at People.com/SnowWhite. Also interesting from the article is that simply “Snow” is being considered as a possible title for the project formerly working under the title: “The Brothers Grimm: Snow White.”

Watch: “J. Edgar” Trailer with Leonardo DiCaprio and Armie Hammer

September 28, 2011 | Posted by Seana Cole in Videos 1 Comment

The trailer for “J. Edgar” starring Leonardo DiCaprio, Armie Hammer, Naomi Watts and Josh Lucas has been released. Directed by Clint Eastwood and written by Dustin Lance Black, the film follows J. Edgar Hoover (DiCaprio), a previous FBI Director.

Here’s the official synopsis:

“During his lifetime, J. Edgar Hoover would rise to be the most powerful man in America. As head of the Federal Bureau of Investigation for nearly 50 years, he would stop at nothing to protect his country. Through eight presidents and three wars, Hoover waged battle against threats both real and perceived, often bending the rules to keep his countrymen safe. His methods were at once ruthless and heroic, with the admiration of the world his most coveted, if ever elusive, prize.

Hoover was a man who placed great value on secrets–particularly those of others–and was not afraid to use that information to exert authority over the leading figures in the nation. Understanding that knowledge is power and fear poses opportunity, he used both to gain unprecedented influence and to build a reputation that was both formidable and untouchable.

He was as guarded in his private life as he was in his public one, allowing only a small and protective inner circle into his confidence. His closest colleague, Clyde Tolson, was also his constant companion. His secretary, Helen Gandy, who was perhaps most privy to Hoover’s designs, remained loyal to the end… and beyond. Only Hoover’s mother, who served as his inspiration and his conscience, would leave him, her passing truly crushing to the son who forever sought her love and approval. As seen through the eyes of Hoover himself, “J. Edgar” explores the personal and public life and relationships of a man who could distort the truth as easily as he upheld it during a life devoted to his own idea of justice, often swayed by the darker side of power.”

The film is set to release in theaters on November 9, 2011.

First look at Lily Collins in Relativity’s as-yet-untitled Snow White film

July 22, 2011 | Posted by Rebecca Lewis in Images 2 Comments

It still doesn’t have an official name; the release date has been pushed forward enough times that we lost count; and right now it’s coming second fiddle to another Snow White film that’s gathering a great supporting cast, but Tarsem Singh’s “Snow White” remake has finally shown us that production is well under way, with our first look at Lily Collins in costume as our lead princess.

Looking classical and beautiful, Collins told EW that her Snow White is “a joyful person who lights up a room and maintains grace at all times” and that she is “very much that fairy tale princess we’ve all read about in books [but] she’s been modernized in a way that she becomes a fighter in the end.”

Featuring The Social Network’s Armie Hammer as the Prince, Julia Roberts as the Evil Queen and Sean Bean as the King, Singh’s version finds the Prince stuck between the Evil Queen who wants to use him to better herself, and Snow White, who wants his help to gain control back of her kingdom. As Collins tells EW though, Snow White goes “from seeking his help to falling in love, though obviously there’s something of a spark from the beginning.”

The as yet untitled Snow White film is due out on March 16th 2012.

Ruth Wilson beats out Abbie Cornish and Jessica Chastain to take “The Lone Ranger” female lead

July 12, 2011 | Posted by Linda Ge in Casting Leave a comment

Move over, it girls of the moment, a new kid has arrived on the block. Relatively unknown British actress Ruth Wilson has landed a highly sought after role, beating out the likes of current go-to actresses Jessica Chastain and Abbie Cornish. Wilson will now have the pleasure of playing the female lead in Gore Verbinski’s new remake of “The Lone Ranger” which sees Armie Hammer as the Masked Man and Johnny Depp as his faithful companion Tonto. Deadline broke the news.

In Verbinski’s version of the old school superhero duo casts Tonto as the moral center of the story, described as “Don Quixote told from Sancho Panza’s point of view.” Wilson’s character is Rebecca, though further details are hard to come by. It’s also unclear if she will be a love interest for Hammer or Depp, but with Verbinski reiterating and reassuring Depp that “Tonto is the part”, it might be reasonable to assume Tonto gets the girl here too.

Wilson, a veteran of British TV who earned a Golden Globe nomination in her acting debut as “Jane Eyre” in a BBC miniseries in 2006, is currently on hit British crime series “Luther” opposite Idris Elba. Depending on which films first, “The Lone Ranger” or the unfortunately named cyber bullying thriller “uwantme2killhim?” will be her big screen debut.

“The Lone Ranger” will presumably shoot this fall and already has a December 21, 2012 release date.

Kristen Stewart finally gets herself a “Huntsman” in Chris Hemsworth

May 15, 2011 | Posted by Rebecca Lewis in Casting 3 Comments

Universal have finally locked down their fourth and final main character for next year’s Snow White and the HuntsmanChris Hemsworth, the Australian actor who won us over in Star Trek and headlines Thor, this past week’s number one movie in America, has officially signed on as Kristen Stewart’s Huntsman in Universal’s take on the Snow White classic.

In this adapatation of the Grimm’s Brother tale, Snow White is no damsel in distress. On the run with the Huntsman, Snow White insists that she be taught self defense in order to protect herself without needing a man.

The news that Hemsworth is to take the titular role is a departure from the previous, and more established, names whom Universal had been eyeing – Viggo Mortensen and fellow Aussie Hugh Jackman.

But it’s good news for Universal who at last have their four main characters after up and comer Sam Claflin signed on to play Prince Charmant earlier this month (Charlize Theron has been attached since the beginning to play the evil step-mother).

Relativity’s own adaptation of the same classic tale The Brothers Grimm: Snow White has been cast for some time now (Lily Collins is to take the role of Snow White here, with Armie Hammer as her Prince and Julia Roberts as the evil step-mother) so we’re excited for these two to finally start filming.

Armie Hammer gets a sidekick in Robert Emms for Tarsem Singh’s “Snow White”

May 5, 2011 | Posted by Linda Ge in Casting 1 Comment

Relatively unknown British actor Robert Emms has landed a pivotal supporting role in director Tarsem Singh’s now untitled “Snow White” project, previously titled “The Brothers Grimm: Snow White”. Armie Hammer plays Prince Andrew in the film and Emms will be his man-in-waiting, a sort of Medieval wingman. They join Julia Roberts as the Evil Queen and Lily Collins as Snow White.

The film – like its rival “Snow White and the Huntsman”, which comes out six months later – is a revisionist take on the classic Grimm fairytale. In Tarsem’s version, from a screenplay by Melissa Wallack and Jason Keller, the Queen and Snow White both vie for the affection of the Prince, who shows up disguised and seeking someone to love him for him rather than his crown. THR also reports that veteran comedic actor Nathan Lane has signed on to play the Queen’s main servant, who stays loyal to her out of fear.

The 25-year-old Emms, who has been acting on British television since 2008, will make his feature film debut in Roland Emmerich’s Shakespearean political thriller “Anonymous” and will be seen alongside Jeremy Irvine in Steven Spielberg’s “War Horse”. Both films will be out in late 2011.

The untitled “Snow White” project is already scheduled for a June 29, 2012 release.

Armie Hammer to solve the mystery of “2:22″

May 2, 2011 | Posted by Linda Ge in Casting Leave a comment

Armie Hammer’s busy dance card continues to fill up. Having recently completed “J. Edgar” and set to begin filming “The Brothers Grimm: Snow White” next month, not to mention in negotiations to join Johnny Depp in “The Lone Ranger”, Hammer now adds an independent psychological thriller to his schedule, the Paul Currie directed “2:22″.

The film, which will be sold at Cannes next month with hopes of filming in Sydney commencing in the fall, is a “rollercoaster thriller that centers on Dylan (Hammer) an air traffic controller who is given a jolt when he narrowly escapes being responsible for a mid air collision between two passenger planes. Caused by a mysterious blinding light that happened at 2:22, these strange occurrences continue and lead Dylan to meet Sarah, with whom he feels inexplicably linked. Together the two discover uncanny similarities with their current predicament and a double murder committed a generation ago. With a grim fate looming, Dylan must solve the mystery of 2:22 to preserve a love whose second chance has finally come.”

We are so glad to see Hammer having a bit of a moment after his scene-stealing turn as Winklevoss twins Cameron and Tyler in David Fincher’s 2010 masterpiece “The Social Network”. After toiling in teen soaps like “Gossip Girl”, Hammer is now well on his way to becoming a bona-fide movie star, working for directors like Clint Eastwood and Tarsem Singh and facing off against co-stars including Leonardo DiCaprio and Julia Roberts.

Lily Collins will be “Snow White” opposite Armie Hammer and Julia Roberts

April 1, 2011 | Posted by Linda Ge in Casting Leave a comment

Relativity pulls ahead of the pack one step further as it finally casts its titular princess in “The Brothers Grimm: Snow White”. Variety reports that Lily Collins is the fairest of them all who will romance Armie Hammer as Prince Andrew and defy Julia Roberts as the Evil Queen. The studio toyed with the idea of casting 16-year-old Oscar nominee Saoirse Ronan in the title role, but the age difference with already-cast 24-year-old Hammer was a cause for hesitation. Collins, who is 22, is much more age appropriate while still maintaining Snow White’s core innocence and fragility. Director Tarsem Singh begins lensing in May for a projected June 29, 2012 release.

“Grimm”, written by Melissa Wallack and Jason Keller, will be a darker and modernized retelling of the Grimm classic, and will see Collins’ Snow White banding together with her handsome prince and seven quarrelsome dwarves to take down the Evil Queen. It will beat its direct competitor, Universal’s “Snow White and the Huntsman” to the box office by six months, with the Charlize Theron-Kristen Stewart vehicle due to begin filming late summer and hitting theaters on December 21, 2012. “Huntsman” also suffered a large casting setback recently as Viggo Mortensen officially exited talks with the studio to take on the role of the Huntsman after months of negotiations. Meanwhile, at Disney, “Toy Story 3″‘s Oscar-winning scribe Michael Arndt is hard at work on a third version of the story, “Snow and the Seven”, set in Medieval China.

Collins, daughter of Phil and one of our faces to watch in 2011, who broke out in 2009′s “The Blind Side”, has been landing one high profile role after another in recent months. First she was cast as lead character Clary Fray in Screen Gems’ adaptation of “The Mortal Instruments”, then beat out the likes of Emma Roberts, Kat Dennings and Portia Doubleday for the female lead in “Odd Thomas” opposite Anton Yelchin. She’ll next be seen in sci-fi thriller “Priest” opposite Paul Bettany and teen-oriented actioner “Abduction” opposite “Twilight”‘s Taylor Lautner.
