Adults who act like children are the catalyst for the coming of age of young Duncan, played by Canadian newcomer Liam James, in Sundance hit dramedy “The Way, Way Back” and today we have the first trailer for the film that sparked a bidding war in Utah in January. Set over a summer beach vacation, Steve Carell and Allison Janney are just a few of the adults in Duncan’s life who aren’t very nice to their children and would rather party than set good examples, but luckily Sam Rockwell shows up to take the impressionable teenager under his wing. And the girl next door (AnnaSophia Robb) is there to make things easier and harder at the same time.
“The Descendants”‘ Oscar-winning screenwriting duo Nat Faxon and Jim Rash teamed up again here, not only writing but making their directorial debut on the film. Bidding kicked off on the film immediately following its premiere screening at the Sundance Film Festival in January, with Fox Searchlight emerging victorious after putting down an unprecedented $10 million for domestic rights. Safe to say this should be a major Oscar player for the indie-minded studio this year.
But luckily we won’t have to wait for an Oscar-friendly release date to see it, as “The Way Way Back” will be released on July 5th. Watch the first trailer below.
