Olga Kurylenko Enrolls at “Vampire Academy”

April 29, 2013 | Posted by Linda Ge in Casting Leave a comment

olga-kurylenko Former Bond Girl Olga Kurylenko is the latest to be cast in young adult adaptation “Vampire Academy: Blood Sisters”, according to Deadline. The main trio of Zoey Deutch, Lucy Fry and Danila Kozlovsky were cast back in February.

Deutch’s Rose is a dhampir, or half-vampire trained to protect Moroi, a race of peaceful, benevolent and mortal vampires from the Strigoi – evil, undead vampires pop culture is probably more familiar with. She plays bodyguard to her best friend Lissa (Fry), who is a Moroi princess. They have fled St. Vladimir’s Academy (the titular Vampire Academy where vampires and half-vampires train and learn to find their place in the world) but are forced to return, and that is when they encounter dhampir Dimitri, who becomes Rose’s instructor and, naturally, her love interest. Kurylenko is lining up the role of Ellen Kirova, the Moroi headmistress of St. Vladimir’s.

There is franchise potential here, as Mead has written six books following Rose, and there is also a spinoff series for a character introduced later in the series. Filming begins in late May under the direction of Mark Waters, and the film already has a February 14, 2014 release date, where it will go head to head against another young adult adaptation, “The Maze Runner.”

Kurylenko is one of our Faces to Watch in 2013 thanks to her dual roles in Terrence Malick’s “To the Wonder” and sci-fi epic “Oblivion” opposite Tom Cruise. Previous to this year, her claim to fame had been as Bond Girl Camille opposite Daniel Craig in “Quantum of Solace”, but it looks like she’ll have no problem leaving that limiting label behind.

Brit Marling Reuniting with “Another Earth” Director for “I Origins”

She’s already reunited with “Sound of My Voice” director Zal Batmanglij on “The East”, and now Brit Marling has lined up her second collaboration with her other Sundance partner, “Another Earth” director Mike Cahill on his sophomore feature, “I Origins.”

Deadline reports Marling, Michael Pitt, French actress Astrid Berges-Frisbey, “The Walking Dead” star Steven Yeun and “The Good Wife”’s Archie Panjabi will star in the sci-fi drama. Marling will be strictly acting in this one, with Cahill having written the script himself. Pitt has the lead role as a molecular biolgist who, along with his lab partner (Marling), “uncovers startling evidence that may fundamentally change society as we know it.” No word on when filming will begin.

Marling, a Sundance staple with the aforementioned “Another Earth”, “Sound of My Voice”, “The East” and “Arbitrage”, fecently wrapped up shooting on young Lincoln biopic “The Green Blade Rises” as well as dark art world comedy “Posthumous.” She is attached to literary adaptation “The Grace that Keeps This World” and most recently Civil War drama “The Keeping Room.”

Pitt is a regular on HBO’s “Boardwalk Empire” while Berges-Frisbey was last seen in “Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides.”

Now Alexander Skarsgard is Up for “The Crow” Instead of Tom Hiddleston

April 29, 2013 | Posted by Linda Ge in Casting 1 Comment

This is gearing up to be the longest round of casting musical chairs ever. It looks like, just days after the first whispers of Tom Hiddleston maybe negotiating to take “The Crow” remake, it appears he’s already out and “True Blood” star Alexander Skarsgard is the new casting rumor du jour, at least according to Deadline.

Skarsgard has no official offer yet (so again this could all amount to nothing), but is being eyed for the role of Eric Draven, a rock star brutally murdered while trying to protect his fiance from a gang of thugs. He is resurrected by supernatural forces and seeks revenge. The original film starring Lee – itself adapted from comics by James O’Barr – spawned three sequels but with a different victim and resurrection each time. F. Javier Gutierrez is directing the latest incarnation of the gothic superhero tale, though with the history it’s already racked up, who knows if and when this will actually happen.

Deadline adds Skarsgard has been courted by several projects in recent days since David Yates’ big budget “Tarzan” remake fell apart and the Swedish actor became available. Skarsgard plays bad boy vampire Eric on HBO’s hit series “True Blood”, now heading into its sixth season. He has wrapped up filming on indies “Disconnect” and “The Hidden” with Andrea Riseborough and “The East”, which we just saw and reviewed and which co-stars Brit Marling and Ellen Page, opens at the end of next month.

Chris O’Dowd Joining “Girls” Co-Star Adam Driver in “The Coward”

Chris O’Dowd may be moving to 18th Century England with co-star Adam Driver. The two guys of HBO’s “Girls” are gearing up to star in “The Coward”, the period comedy to be directed by “Ceremony”‘s Max Winkler, according to The Wrap.

Driver joined the project in February, and is set to play a nobleman whose family has a long history ending up on the losing side of to-the-death duels. When he’s challenged to such a duel, he hires a criminal to take his place. The criminal (prsumably O’Dowd?) ends up rather liking the lifestyle of the rich and steals Driver’s character’s identity. Winkler wrote the script with Matt Spicer and it’s adapted from the Nick Jones play.

O’Dowd broke out in a pair of Judd Appatow films, “Bridesmaids” and “This is 40″, then turned in a memorable recurring appearance on Lena Dunham’s HBO series “Girls” and will also star in upcoming documentary-style comedy series “Family Tree” for the network. He also stars in crowd-pleasing Cannes premiere “The Sapphires”, out now, and will star in hot indie comedy “St. Vincent De Van Nuys” with Bill Murray and “Bridesmaids” co-star Melissa McCarthy.

Newcomer Travis Tope Lands “The Town that Dreaded Sundown” Male Lead

travis-tope Here’s a story to motivate you wannabe actors out there. Plano, Texas resident Travis Tope had been in Los Angeles all of ten days when he landed the male lead role in MGM’s remake of cult horror classic “The Town that Dreaded Sundown.”

THR reports Tope beat out at least two more established young actors for the role of a classmate of Addison Timlin’s character Jami in the remake. The 1976 film was a fictionalized account of actual murders that occured in the town of Texarkana in 1946. A masked assailant attacked eight people, five of whom were killed, over the course of three months, always late at night. The modernized remake will take a meta approach to the material, acknowledging the original film as copycat murders happen at an anniversary screening. As Jami searches for answers, Tope’s character decides to make a documentary about her findings. Filming is set to begin in May under the direction of Alfonso Gomez-Rejon.

Tope, who’s done regional theater work in the Dallas area, also appeared as a child actor in 2007 indie drama “Divine Souls.” After auditioning from home on tape for a few Hollywood projects but not landing anything, he decided to move to Los Angeles for a harder push, and it immediately paid off in the form of this coup.

Michael Fassbender to Play “Macbeth” in Shakespearean Classic

April 29, 2013 | Posted by Linda Ge in Casting 2 Comments

All those intriguing projects being put together to go out to buyers at Cannes are starting to make themselves known, and here’s one of the most intriguing. Screen Daily reports Michael Fassbender is attached to play the titular role in a big screen adaptation of Shakespeare’s iconic tragedy “Macbeth” for fast rising Australian director Justin Kurzel.

The film is expected to shoot later this year with Fassbender in the role of the ambitious Scottish army captain who resorts to regicide in order to steal the crown, plunging the rest of his life into turmoil and regret, and leading his country into civil war. Lady Macbeth, long considered one of the best and most complex Shakespearean villains, is being cast and talks are underway with “at least one Hollywood leading actress.” My vote unequivocally goes to Jessica Chastain, who would nail this role, but of course there are plenty of other worthy choices as well.

Fassbender is currently reprising his role as Magneto in “X-Men: Days of Future Past” and is already attached to another literary role, that of novelist Thomas Wolfe in biopic “Genius.” He has wrapped up shooting on Steve McQueen’s “Twelve Years a Slave” as well as Terrence Malick’s untitled Texas-set romantic drama with Ryan Gosling and Rooney Mara.

east

Brit Marling and Zal Batmanglij made a splash at Sundance two years ago with their micro-indie “Sound of My Voice”, and Hollywood quickly came calling: The screening for their new film “The East” kicked off at the Newport Beach Film Festival with a program director quipping “let’s see what they were able to do with an actual budget.” Well, what they did with an actual Fox Searchlight-sized budget is something altogether more mainstream than their previous effort, with all the positives and negatives that come with it.

Jeremy Irvine Set for Sequel “The Woman in Black: Angel of Death”

April 29, 2013 | Posted by Linda Ge in Casting Leave a comment

jeremy-irvine “War Horse” star Jeremy Irvine is set to follow in the footsteps of Daniel Radcliffe, signing on to star in the sequel to the film that proved to be a success for Radcliffe’s post-Harry Potter career. “The Woman in Black: Angel of Death”, takes place 40 years after the events that terrorized a Victorian British village in the original, and British actress Phoebe Fox will star opposite Irvine in the World War II set horror.

The creepy Eel Marsh House at the center of the original film is back, as the British government seizes the long abandoned property to house evacuated children, which awakens the ghostly presence that resides there. Tom Harper will direct and had this to say about his cast: “Jeremy and Phoebe are fantastic actors to continue The Woman in Black’s chilling tale. I’m looking forward to working with them both on the film and can’t wait to start shooting with the pair.”

Irvine was hand-picked by Steven Spielberg to headline his “War Horse”, which eventually went on to earn six Oscar nominations, including Best Picture. He has since starred in Mike Newell’s new adaptation of “Great Expectations” as well as upcoming WWII drama “The Railway Man”, in which he plays a younger version of Colin Firth. He’s currently filming Ron Rash adaptation “The World Made Straight” opposite Minka Kelly.

Fox had a bit part in Anne Hathaway-Jim Sturgess romantic drama “One Day” and is a regular on series “Switch.”

James Franco to Direct and Star in Adaptation of “The Garden of Last Days”

April 28, 2013 | Posted by Linda Ge in Casting Leave a comment

I know what you’re thinking: What’s that elusive James Franco up to these days? Deadline reports the ever-busy multi-hyphenate has lined up his next directing gig, an adaptation of Andre Dubus III’s novel “The Garden of Last Days”, which he will of course also play a starring role on screen in.

Hanna Weg adapted the novel, which is set at the onset of the 9/11 terrorist attacks, but the screen version will be set in contemporary times. Set in and around a strip club, “Garden of Last Days” follows three central characters, a stripper named April forced to bring her young son to work after his babysitter has a panic attack, an angry and lonely man kicked out of the club and “a foreigner with an endless supply of cash on the brink of committing a terrifying act.” Yes, Dubus fictitiously imagines the mindset of one of the 9/11 hijackers, but no word on how that will be changed since the timeframe for the film will be shifted.

Franco will presumably play AJ, the patron who’s kicked out, and he’ll direct the film in July, after “Good People”, the thriller he’s starring in with Kate Hudson and Omar Sy. That films in May, after Franco heads to the Cannes Film Festival to premiere his adaptation of Faulkner’s “As I Lay Dying.” And if he can find the time, he might finish out the year on Werner Herzog’s “Queen of the Desert” with Robert Pattinson and Naomi Watts. Right now he’s filming “True Story” with Jonah Hill and will soon be seen in apocalyptic comedy “This is the End.”
