Matthew Goode Joining “The Imitation Game” Opposite Benedict Cumberbatch and Keira Knightley

matthew-goode Mathematician biopic “The Imitation Game” has added one more braniac to its roster. The Daily Mail reports British actor Matthew Goode has joined lead Benedict Cumberbatch as well as Keira Knightley in the WWII-set biopic of tortured genius Alan Turing.

Norwegian director Morten Tyldum is helming the film about British mathematician Turing (Cumberbatch), who helped the Allies defeat the Germans by cracking the enemy’s “Enigma Code” during WWII, but a decade later was prosecuted by his own government for being a homosexual. Rather than take a prison sentence, he chose chemical castration, an act that would lead him into the pits of depression and ultimately suicide. Goode will play fellow code-hacker Hugh Alexander, while Knightley is lining up the role of Joan Clarke, another co-worker who was briefly engaged to Turing before he came out to her.

Goode, who many of us will forever remember for his role opposite Mandy Moore in “Chasing Liberty”, most recently played Mia Wasikowska’s creepy Uncle Charlie in “Stoker.” He’s wrapped indie British period drama “Belle” with Sarah Gadon, Sam Claflin and Gugu Mbatha-Raw as well as the pilot for potential Showtime series “The Vatican” opposite Kyle Chandler. He’s also been cast as the devious George Wickham (“Why not Darcy?” cried millions of girls, or was it just me?) in “Pride and Prejudice”-themed BBC miniseries “Death Comes to Pemberly.”

Dane DeHaan, Jack O’Connell, Alexander Dreymon Testing for Angelina Jolie’s “Unbroken”

June 13, 2013 | Posted by Linda Ge in Casting 1 Comment

unbroken Angelina Jolie has began searching for the right young actor to play the lead in her adaptation of the incredible true story of Louis Zamperini, and Deadline reports Dane DeHaan, Jack O’Connell and Alexander Dreymom will test for the role in “Unbroken”, based on the best-selling book by Laura Hillenbrand.

Born in 1917 to Italian immigrant parents, Zamperini was picked on in school for his lack of English skills, but a troubled youth was turned around when he got involved in his high school’s track team. He went on to qualify for the 1936 Olympics in the 5000 metres race. He finished 8th in the race at the Olympics, but a fast finish time garnered him a personal meeting with Adolf Hiter. And that’s just the beginning of Zamperini’s epic journey as he then enlisted in the army in 1941 and was caught in a plane crash, landing in the middle of the Pacific Ocean with two other soldiers, managing to survive for 47 days, before they were found and then immediately captured by the Japanese Navy. As a POW, Zamperini and pilot and fellow survivor Russel Allen “Phil” Phillips were beaten and starved for over three years before being discovered alive. Suffice to say, this is a juicy role and could be career-making for the right young actor. Deadline cautions Jolie, who has already met with an extensive list of young actors, may be testing others beyond the three reported here.

DeHaan is the most recognizable here and the one whose career seems to be absolutely on fire these days, currently on screen in Derek Cianfrance’s “The Place Beyond the Pines” opposite Ryan Gosling and Bradley Cooper and currently shooting the Harry Osborn role in “The Amazing Spider-Man 2″ opposite Andrew Garfield. O’Connell is known for UK series “Skins”, to which he returns as Cook for a special season 7, which catches up on past fan favorite characters, also featuring Kaya Scodelario’s return as Effy. He gave up the male led role in “Beautiful Creatures”, but landed one of the leads of “300: Rise of an Empire” instead. Not much is known about newcomer Dreymon, but he was born in 1983, making him the oldest contender here, and his credits include “Resistance” opposite Andrea Riseborough and the upcoming “Blood Ransom.”

emilyvancamp “Captain America: The Winter Soldier” star Emily Vancamp is taking further advantage of her summer hiatus from ABC drama series “Revenge” to fit in another film. THR reports Vancamp and Michael Nyqvist have been set to star in indie drama “The Girl in the Book”, written by Marya Cohn, who will also make her feature directorial debut on the project.

Vancamp will play the daughter of a literary agent who’s forced to confront her painful past when asked to work on the re-release of her father’s star client’s book: “Forced to face difficult memories and make bold decisions, she ultimately overcomes her demons, allowing her to find love and rediscover her creative voice.” Nyqvist will play the author, with filming set for mid-June in New York.

Primarily a television actress who broke out on The WB family series “Everwood”, which ran for three seasons, Vancamp then popped up on ABC drama series “Brothers and Sisters”, staying with the show for five seasons before landing her current leading gig on “Revenge”, which just wrapped season 2 and will return for season 3 in the fall. After a very extensive search, VanCamp beat out a slew of young rising film actresses for the female lead role of Sharon Carter, aka Agent 13 in sequel “Captain America: The Winter Soldier” opposite Chris Evans.

theresesm Things are getting a little racy – for 19th Century France – for Elizabeth Olsen and Oscar Isaac in our look at the first official image released from Emile Zola novel adaptation “Therese” (formerly “Therese Raquin”, like the book).

Collider has also revealed the official synopsis: “Set in the lower depths of 1860s Paris, THERESE is a tale of obsessive love, adultery and revenge based on Emile Zola’s scandalous novel, Thérèse Raquin. Therese (Elizabeth Olsen of “Martha Marcy May Marlene”), a sexually repressed beautiful young woman, is trapped into a loveless marriage to her sickly cousin, Camille (Tom Felton of the “Harry Potter” franchise), by her domineering aunt, Madame Raquin (two-time Oscar, Emmy and Golden Globe winner Jessica Lange). Therese spends her days confined behind the counter of a small shop and her evenings watching Madame play dominos with an eclectic group. After she meets her husband’s alluring friend, Laurent (Oscar Isaac), she embarks on an illicit affair that leads to tragic consequences.”

LD Entertainment has set “Therese”, directed by Charlie Startton, for a September 27th limited release. See the full image of Olsen and Isaac below.

Emma Watson Attached to Fantasy Adaptation “Queen of the Tearling”

Emma Watson After choosing roles as different from Hermione Grainger as you can get post-”Harry Potter”, Emma Watson is now ready to step back into the fantasy genre, with Variety reporting the young Brit is attached to star in “Queen of the Tearling”, an adaptation of an upcoming fantasy novel trilogy.

Described as a female-driven “Game of Thrones”, the novel’s 19-year-old heroine was partly inspired by the idealism of a 2007 Barack Obama. Erika Johansen’s debut novel/trilogy, set three centuries after an environmental disaster where an evil Red Queen rules the land, will be published in 2014 by HarperCollins. The film is in the development stage and a writer and director have not yet been hired, so this might be a ways off for both readers and moviegoers.

Watson opens this weekend in Sofia Coppola’s “The Bling Ring”, which premiered at Cannes last week, where we called it “not Coppola’s strongest work but remains an enjoyable, fun and cautionary tale for our time.” She also stars in this weekend’s apocalyptic comedy “This is the End”, playing a fictionalized version of herself opposite James Franco, Seth Rogen and Jonah Hill. She recently wrapped Daren Aronofsky’s “Noah” with Russell Crowe and Logan Lerman and earned very high marks last year for her role in “The Perks of Being a Wallflower.”

Eddie Redmayne to Play Stephen Hawking in Biopic “Theory of Everything”

June 13, 2013 | Posted by Linda Ge in Casting Leave a comment

eddie-redmayne British actor Eddie Redmayne has become increasingly in demand thanks to his breakout role as Marius in Tom Hooper’s “Les Miserables.” Deadline reports Redmayne has landed the role of genius physicist Stephen Hawking in biopic “Theory of Everything”, which James Marsh is set to direct. Deadline also reports Redmayne is also being sought for Thomas Vinterberg’s adaptation of “Far From the Madding Crowd” opposite Carey Mulligan and Matthias Schoenaerts, but believes Redmayne’s priority will be the Hawking biopic.

Filming is set to begin in early fall with Redmayne as the British physicist who grew up in a financially strapped but highly intelligent family. Hawking did not succeed at school as a young boy but always showed an aptitude for science, earning the nickname “Einstein.” He started Oxford at age 17, where he felt isolated for being younger than his classmates and finding the work “ridiculously easy.” After being diagnosed with motor neurone disease at age 21, Hawking fell into depression and only found something to continue living for upon falling in love with Jane Wilde, a friend of his sister’s. They were engaged in 1964 and the film is expected to focus on their relationship.

In “Far From the Madding Crowd”, Mulligan plays a headstrong young woman named Bathsheba and her three suitors: Gabriel, a shepherd (Schoenaerts); William, a rich older farmer; and Troy, a handsome young soldier, through a number of years and dramatic episodes as she grows up and learns what is truly valuable in life. Presumably Redmayne is being sought for the role of Troy, which had once also been linked to Matthew Goode. But “Crowd” also films this fall, so Redmayne’s ability to commit to both films is in question.

Redmayne was one of our Breakout Stars of 2012 thanks to his revelatory and heartbreaking turn as student revolutionary Marius in Tom Hooper’s adaptation of hit musical “Les Miserables”, Oscar nominated for Best Picture last year. He’s already tackled Hardy in BBC miniseries “Tess of the D’Ubervilles” opposite Gemma Arterton, and was the best part of Simon Curtis’ “My Week with Marilyn” opposite Michelle Williams. Redmayne is currently filming the Wachowskis’ sci-fi epic “Jupiter Ascending” with Channing Tatum and Mila Kunis.

specnow-briesm Sundance hit “The Spectacular Now” has long been on our list of the most anticipated movies of the year, and over the past few days the film’s official Twitter has been slowly killing us by releasing daily photos from the film (and yet, still no trailer).

Today’s photo features our first look at Brie Larson, captioned “That moment when your ex-girlfriend sees your new girlfriend for the first time…” Larson, of course, plays ex-girlfriend to Miles Teller, whose Sutter Keely is dumped by her popular and beautiful Cassidy only to drunkenly land across the lawn of Aimee Finnicky (Shailene Woodley), the aforementioned new girlfriend Cassidy is solemnly staring at (off-screen) here. James Ponsoldt directed the adaptation of the Tim Tharp novel, and Teller and Woodley won a Special Jury Prize for Acting for their lead roles at this year’s Sundance Film Fest.

June 11, 2013 | Posted by Linda Ge in Casting Leave a comment

sophie-mcshera Lily James’ family of tormenters is growing. Kenneth Branagh’s titular “Cinderella” already has a wicked stepmother in Cate Blanchett and one evil stepsister in Holliday Grainger, and now she’s got another one in “Downton Abbey” co-star Sophie McShera. THR reports the British actress has joined the Disney live action adaptation of the classic fairy tale, which also stars “Game of Thrones”‘ Richard Madden as Cinderella’s Prince. Filming is set to begin this fall with a 2014 release in mind.

McShera, a 27-year-old relative newcomer, was a regular on British series “Waterloo Road” before landing her big break as kitchen maid-turned-assistant cook Daisy Mason on ITV series “Downton Abbey”, now heading into its fourth season. “Cinderella” will mark her big screen debut, and quite a big coup at that.

Krysten Ritter Joins Amy Adams and Christoph Waltz in Tim Burton’s “Big Eyes”

krysta-ritter On the heels of the cancellation of her ABC sitcom “Don’t Trust the B—- in Apartment 23″, funny girl Krysta Ritter has joined the cast of Tim Burton’s painting biopic “Big Eyes”, according to Deadline.

The quirky true life story features Amy Adams and Christoph Waltz as Margaret and Walter Keane, the married couple responsible for paintings of large-eyed children which became iconic and massively popular in the 1960s. After they split, they each claimed sole responsibility, culminating in a courtroom paint-off, where the wife emerged as the true artist. Ritter will play DeeAnn, Margaret’s confidante who coaxes her out of her shy shell in order to claim the credit she deserves.

Before headlining her own ABC sitcom “Don’t Trust the B—- in Apartment 23″, which was cancelled this year after 2 seasons, Ritter had carved out quite a niche playing the quirky best friend to romantic comedy leading ladies, having acted as BFF to Isla Fisher in “Confessions of a Shopaholic”, Cameron Diaz in “What Happens in Vegas” and Alice Eve in “She’s Out of My League.”

Watch: Aaron Paul Behind the Wheel in First “Need for Speed” Set Footage

“Breaking Bad” star Aaron Paul looks to be having a blast in his first blockbuster starring role, driving a variety of exotic fast cars for 2014′s video game adaptation “Need for Speed.” The first footage from the film, which features tons of behind the scenes footage of mostly car chases, has been released, which showcase Paul as well as brief glimpses of co-stars Imogen Poots and Dominic Cooper racing across an idyllic (but curvy) countryside road.

Scott Waugh, who can be seen talking about the movie and giddily watching action sequences from video village, is directing the film which is set in the 1970s, and Paul plays Tobey, an underground race car driver who is framed and imprisoned when his best friend is murdered. Upon his release, he races across the country at top speed to seek revenge. Cooper plays an ex-NASCAR driver who runs a business building supercars, while Poots plays an exotic car dealer.

Not a lot of character insight here in the footage unveiled at today’s E3 convention, but that’s to be expected, since moviegoers will be drawn to this one for its expensive cars, many of which can be seen gleefully driven off the road and destroyed in the name of popcorn entertainment. “Need for Speed” will be released on March 14, 2014. See the first behind the scenes footage below.
