The trailer for “Queen of Katwe” was released today. Disney provided viewers with a glimpse at the inspirational story of a young girl who finds a very unique dream.
“Queen of Katwe” centers on Harriet Mutesi, played by Lupita Nyong’o, and her daughter Phiona (Madina Nalwanga). Their family makes due with very little, but Phiona discovers she is a chess prodigy who goes on to become a world champion. David Oyelowo also stars as Robert Katende, a missionary who begins the chess program Phiona takes. The film’s cast is filled with many non-acting children, including its star Nalwanga, who shine in the trailer.
Based on the novel “The Queen of Katwe: A Story of Life, Chess, and One Extraordinary Girl’s Dram of Becoming A Gradmaster” the film will be directed by Mira Nair. William Wheeler will serve as screenwriter. John Carls and Lydia Dean Pilcher will produce.
