“X-Men: Apocalypse” star Tye Sheridan has landed the lead role of Wade in Steve Spielberg’s adaptation of “Ready Player One.”

The film is based on Ernest Cline’s novel of the same name, which is set in a futuristic society where most of the population live in squalor but spend most of their time in a virtual reality.

Sheridan will play the role of Wade, who sets off on a treasure hunt along with the rest of the population put on by the mysterious inventor of the VR environment they log onto every day. Sheridan joins Olivia Cooke, who was previously cast as the female lead.

Sheridan broke out in Jeff Nichols’ “Mud” and Terrence Malick’s “The Tree of Life.” He’ll next be seen as Scott Summers, aka Cyclops, in “X-Men: Apocalypse.”
