“Shadowhunters” has added a “Glee” alum to its cast. According to The Wrap Harry Shum Jr. is the latest addition to the upcoming ABC Family drama.
The series stars Katherine McNamara as Clary Fray, a young girl who finds herself entering a whole new world after her mother is kidnapped. On the heels of turning eighteen, Clary finds out her mother is an angel-human hybrid who fights demons. These demon hunters, called Shadowhunters, are part of Clary’s family history and she will have to enter this mysterious and dangerous new world to find her mother.
Shum has nabbed the role of Magnus Bane. The very eccentric and stylish man is better known as the High Warlock of Brooklyn. He may look very young, but he is actually hundreds of years old. Magnus is not very trusting, but Clary and her comrades will need his help. He joins the previously cast Alberto Rosende, Emeraude Toubia, Isaiah Mustafa, Matthew Daddario and Dominic Sherwood.
Also joining the cast in a very important recurring role is Alan Van Sprung. TVLine reports the former “Reign” cast member will play the series villain Valentine. He is the most dangerous kind of villain because he is both very intelligent and extremely powerful. The evil Shadowhunter has big plans and Clary is going to end up in his crosshairs.
“Shadowhunters,” which is based on Cassandra Clare’s “Mortal Instruments” book series, received a straight-to-series order from ABC Family.
While Shum is known for playing Mike Chang on “Glee,” his other credits include appearances in two installments of the “Step Up” series, “Moms’ Night Out” and the upcoming “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon II: The Green Destiny.”
