Gina Rodriguez Lands Female Lead in ‘Deepwater Horizon’ Opposite Mark Wahlberg

“Jane the Virgin” landed Gina Rodriguez her first Golden Globe, and now it may be launching her movie career as well. According to TheWrap, the actress has landed the female lead role in Peter Berg’s oil rig drama “Deepwater Horizon” which has Mark Wahlberg also on board to star.

The film revolves around the 2010 explosion on the Deepwater Horizon rig which caused the deaths of 11 crew members and led to the biggest oil spill in US history.Rodriguez beat out Kristen Stewart for the role of Andrea Fleytas, who was working on the oil rig’s machinery after the explosion when she called in a Mayday signal to shore after noticing no one had done so. She ended up being reprimanded for her actions.

“Deepwater Horizon” was written by Matthew Michael Carnahan and already has a release date of September 30th, 2016.

Rodriguez, who previously impressed in Sundance dramas “Filly Brown” and “Sleeping With the Fishes,” got her big breakout role as the title character on The CW’s freshman drama “Jane The Virgin.” It’s already been renewed for a second season, with the season finale set to air on Monday, May 11.
