In a year with several standout performances from young actors, BAFTA has announced their nominees for this year’s Rising Star Award. The British public will have to choose between Miles Teller, Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Shailene Woodley, Jack O’Connell and Margot Robbie.
The two Americans who made the cut, Teller and Woodley, have been on fire lately. Woodley made a major splash a couple years ago in “The Descendants,” which she followed up with critically acclaimed indie “The Spectacular Now” opposite Teller. In 2014, she was in indie “White Bird in a Blizzard,” and blockbuster hits “Divergent” and “The Fault in Our Stars.” Teller was in comedy “That Awkward Moment” and “Divergent” alongside Woodley before his star making role in “Whiplash.” His role playing jazz drummer Andrew Neiman opposite JK Simmons’ crazed music teacher put his performance and the film itself on numerous end-of-the-year lists. Both actors will be in future “Divergent” installments include 2015’s “Insurgent” while Teller will be playing Mr. Fantastic in “Fantastic Four” next year.
Robbie, the sole Australian on the list, made quite the name for herself playing Leonardo DiCarprio’s wife Naomi on “The Wolf of Wall Street.” Americans can see her next month in “Focus” playing a rookie con artist opposite Will Smith. Jane Porter in “Tarzan” and Harley Quinn in “Suicide Squad” are some of big roles coming down the line for this talented actress.
O’Connell and Mbatha-Raw did their native country proud in 2014. Incredibly performances in “Belle” and “Beyond The Lights” highlighted Mbath-Raw’s talent brilliantly while simultaneously showing her versatility as an actress. She will next be seen in “Jupiter Ascending” and was recently added to the cast of Civil War film “Free State of Jones” opposite Matthew McConaughey. O’Connell had a pair of incredible performances of his own with crime drama “Starred Up” and war drama “Unbroken.” The young actor is part of the cast of this year’s “Tulip Fever.”
The Rising Star Award is the only BAFTA award where a public vote determines the winner. Parminder Vir, Alice Eve, James King, Dexter Fletcher, Nina Gold, Marc Samuelson and Susanna White were on the jury alongside BAFTA’s Film Committee deputy chair Pippa Harris. The winner will be announced February 8th.
