The first awards of the Oscar season has kicked things off today with the 24th annual Gotham Independent Film Awards announcing its nominees today. With the focus on US-based independent films (even more so than the aptly named Independent Spirit Awards), the nominees are unsurprisingly filled with some of our favorite up and comers and breakout stars of the year.

Richard Linklater’s “Boyhood” led the way with four nominations, including for lead actor Ellar Coltrane in the Breakthrough Actor category. Also nominated in the category are Riz Ahmed in “Nightcrawler,” Macon Blair in “Blue Ruin,” Joey King in “Wish I Was Here,” Jenny Slate in “Obvious Child” and Tessa Thompson in “Dear White People.”

Elsewhere, Miles Teller is nominated for Best Actor for his role in Damien Chazelle’s “Whiplash” and Oscar Isaac is nominated for “A Most Violent Year,” which has yet to be released. British rising star Gugu Mbatha-Raw is nominated for Best Actress for her role in “Beyond the Lights,” joining Mia Wasikowska in the category, nominated for “Tracks.”
