It’s summertime and that means one thing (to me): fresh ABC Family shows. Their newest series, “Chasing Life,” follows April (Italia Ricci), a 20-something journalist just starting out at a newspaper who finds out that she has cancer.

The title suggests that with April’s diagnosis comes a “You Only Live Once” facet, and while that will probably come later in the series, the trope is absent in the first three episodes. It’s more along the lines of coming to terms with illness and finding the right time to tell family, and that there never is a right time, something that April will very slowly realize. Being on a network of shows notorious for dragging secrets out as long as possible, April will probably keep this to herself for the entirety of the season.

While the show’s premise is a woman with cancer, the real story is in the family dynamic. April and her family (she lives with her mother, grandmother, and sister) are coping with the loss of her father, the shunned uncle who had a hand in his death and all the issues in between.

A major draw to “Chasing Life” is the return of ABC Family favorite, Scott Michael Foster, who plays Leo, a spoiled, unpleasant son-of-a-congressman harboring a secret of his own and will most likely be clashing with April on more than one occasion as she covers his father’s campaign.

“Chasing Life” is not going to be the cute, fun ABC Family show we’re used to seeing. At times hard to watch, especially for anyone who has been affected by cancer, April’s journey is going to be an emotional, but charming one as Ricci brings a delightful, whip-smart character to the table, who is totally worth watching for.

“Chasing Life” premieres Tuesday, June 10th at 9pm, on ABC Family.
