We’ve got Adam Driver as the villain, but who will be the Jedi to take him on in “Star Wars: Episode VII”? Variety reports it just may be one of these five relatively unknown young actors: Ed Speleers, John Boyega, Jesse Plemons, Matthew James Thomas and Ray Fisher.
The trade doesn’t specify the character the five men are up for, but does call it “the lead role.” Plemons is the name we’ve heard before in connection with this specific part, and it appears he hasn’t quite locked it down yet, but is still very much in contention. He’s most well known for his roles as Landry on “Friday Night Lights” and Todd on “Breaking Bad,” and is obviously making quite a name for himself on the big screen as well.
Boyega, the breakout star of Joe Cornish’s “Attack the Block,” was recently shortlisted for the lead role in Matthew Vaughn’s “The Secret Service,” though he lost out to fellow Brit Taron Egerton in the end. He most recently premiered drama “Imperial Dreams” at Sundance. Speleers last headlined potential franchise launcher “Eragon,” which didn’t do too well at the box office, but he’s rebounded with a role on “Downton Abbey.”
The two least known names on this list are Broadway actors. Fisher most recently played Muhammad Ali in “Fetch Clay, Make Man,” while Thomas starred in the Tony-nominated musical “Pippin.”
