Rose Byrne is the latest to (maybe) join a big screen musical adaptation, with Variety reporting she is in early talks to take the role of Grace in Will Gluck’s adaptation of the classic orphan tale “Annie.” She is also up for a role in “The Man From U.N.C.L.E.” but budget cuts on that film could delay or cancel that deal altogether.
Oscar nominee Quvenzhane Wallis plays the little orphan Annie in Sony’s remake, with Jamie Foxx as Benjamin Stacks, the updated version of Oliver “Daddy” Warbucks, and Cameron Diaz as the mean orphanage matron Miss Hannigan. Byrne is in the early stages of negotiations for the role of Grace, Warbucks/Stacks’ faithful secretary who brings Annie to the mansion for Christmas, who loves her from the start and vows to help her find her family. Filming is slated to begin this fall, and the new “Annie” already has a December 25, 2014, where it will go head to head against another musical, Disney and Rob Marshall’s adaptation of “Into the Woods.”
It’s unclear which role Byrne is up for in Guy Ritchie’s new take on 1960s comedic spy series “The Man From U.N.C.L.E.” but she would be joining a cast that already includes Henry Cavill, Armie Hammer and Alicia Vikander. Though with the budget being cut, it’s unclear where the film now stands, with or without Byrne. It has been a particularly rocky road even predating the current filmmakers’ involvement, after all.
Byrne, last seen in “The Place Beyond the Pines” opposite Bradley Cooper, British rom com “I Give It a Year” and Google
infomercial set comedy “The Internship”, recently wrapped Seth Rogen-Zac Efron comedy “Townies” and horror sequel “Insidious: Chapter 2”, and is currently filming “This is Where I Leave You” opposite Jason Bateman.
