“Beautiful Creatures” star Zoey Deutch leads trio of unknowns in YA adaptation “Vampire Academy”

Without nearly as much fanfare as their fellow YA adaptations, the three leads of the upcoming adaptation of Richelle Mead series “Vampire Academy” were announced today via the film’s official Facebook. The most recognizable of the trio is Zoey Deutch, who will also play the lead character Rose Hathaway, and she’ll be joined by Australian actress Lucy Fry in the role of Vasilisa “Lissa” Dragomir, Rose’s best friend and Danila Kozlovsky as Dimitri Belikov, the inevitable love interest.

“Mean Girls” director Mark Waters is directing the film – to be retitled “Vampire Academy: Blood Sisters” since “Vampire Academy” is pretty embarrassing on its own in this post-Twilight world – written by his brother Dan Waters (“Heathers”). Deutch’s Rose is a dhampir, or half-vampire trained to protect Moroi, a race of peaceful, benevolent and mortal vampires from the Strigoi – evil, undead vampires pop culture is probably more familiar with. She plays bodyguard to her best friend Lissa, who is a Moroi princess. They have fled St. Vladimir’s Academy (the titular Vampire Academy where vampires and half-vampires train and learn to find their place in the world) but are forced to return, and that is when they encounter dhampir Dimitri, who becomes Rose’s instructor and, naturally, her love interest. There is franchise potential here, as Mead has written six books following Rose, and there is also a spinoff series for a character introduced later in the series. Filming on the first movie will begin in early summer.

Deutch is racking up those YA adaptation franchises, as she’ll soon be seen in the role of Emily in Richard LaGravanese’s adaptation of “Beautiful Creatures.” She was a regular on short-lived CW series “Ringer”, where she played Sarah Michelle Gellar’s stepdaughter. Aussie Fry most recently appeared on TV series “Lightning Point” in her native country. Moscow-born Kozlovski is most known for Russian-language films “We Are From the Future” and “Soulless”, but is also fluent in English.

Why the hell would they change the name? Vampire Academy is the name of the book, why not keep it the name of the movie? Screw Twilight. KEEP IT VAMPIRE ACADEMY! The people at VA are actual vampires, not sparkly wanna be’s.

It’s actually “Vampire Academy: Blood Sisters”, not just “Blood Sisters” as the article suggests. It was the title used for the first book in German and Croatian translations.
Besides, would we really want to see “The Vampire Academy Saga: Last Sacrifice”, etc?

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO THEY ARE NOT SUPPOSED TO PLAY THE ROLES FOR THE VAMPIRE ACADEMY!!!!!!

  3. Domi

    Vampire academy!! no “Blood Sisters”!!!!!!!

Totally NOT who I see playing the characters, but I can deal with the female leads. That Dimitri?!!! I won’t pass judgment until I see a trailer, so I guess I’m happy it’s finally being made.

So excited! The photo here doesn’t do Danila justice…he’s been suggested pretty consistently on the Facebook page for a long time, and is a great pick! Can’t wait to see the film!

Personally I’m okay with changing the name. Don’t get me wrong, I LOVE the books and have reread them several times. But the name was what made me hesitate to start the series in the first place (it was recommended to me right after the Twilight craze, so I was hesitant). Furthermore, whenever I want to recommend the book to the others I always have to rush and explain why it’s so awesome after telling them the title, because everyone always cringes. There was an interview where it was revealed that the original title was different, but was later saved for one of the sequels, so it’s like this was it’s “true” title to begin with.

Again, not bashing the book at all, but you have to admit the title Vampire Academy can be a little awkward, and brings awkward images to mind. After all, the Harry Potter series didn’t start off with Magic School. XD

    Just my two cents :)

so it’s NOT like this was it’s “true” title to begin with*

(sorry, missed a word in there)

Don’t like the title at all.. Don’t like Rose and Lissa either. Dimitri is okay but i prefered Ben barnes as Dimka.. And by the way the true title was firt Kissed by shadows and not ‘Blood Sisters’. So why would they’ve changed it into that title ;/ And by the way.. Rose should be turkish.. not that maya girl from zack and cody. Lissa is not that bad but i imagined her as even more beautiful. Sorry for this bad comment but it’s my opinion. But i love the books ^^ So I hope that they don’t screw up that movie..

Oh forget to mention that Zoey doesn’t look like Rose at all.. She’s too skinny xd

    • Maria Jose Eyzaguirre

I know- but the original title Kissed by Shadows was then adapted to Shadow Kiss for the third book, so it’s not like they can really use it for the first movie…

Thank you for making these movies. I trust the people that is making the movies, they know way more about it than we do. It can be called Rose and i still want to watch it.

This book series is phenomenal. Intense with a mature depth not seen in any recent book-to-movie franchises. The characters are fully developed and will draw you into their interactions and situations like no other book has done before. For the first time, there’s not only a major female lead who is strong and admirable, but there’s also focus on girl friendship, social issues currently affecting girls today, major heart-wrenching and thrilling action, and a love story that isn’t the predominant and only theme and is actually well-developed! The books are international best-sellers. They will make for amazing movies. The cast is excellent. I love Lucy Fry’s look for Lissa. Danila is an award-winning Russian actor who suits Dimitri’s character perfectly, and Zoey looks like she can carry Rose’s fiery, fierce personality. Can’t wait!

Well, to be honest I saw them all acting except Danila.. But the episodes were translated in Dutch so there’s a big difference. Lucy Fry is beautiful but she just doesn’t fit the part for Lissa.. neither does Zoey. Danila just needs longer hair xd
