We thought Elle Fanning and Alice Englert shone in Sally Potter‘s “Ginger and Rosa“, their superb performances saving “the film from melodrama’ and now
“Ginger and Rosa” is the tale of the two titular best friends growing up against the backdrop of early 1960s Britain, the Cuban Missile Crisis and a burgeoning protest scene against the nuclear bomb. These newly released scenes feature our two leads, one offering up the opening scene of the film, of two young girls experimenting as only best friends can but also showcasing their youth. The second is a funny and touching moment of two friends tightening their jeans in cold water, an act that teenage girls around Britain did throughout the sixties and seventies, whilst discussing Simone de Beauvoir and the attitudes of boys towards girls.
“Ginger and Rosa” is still awaiting a release date for the US but A24 picked up the rights, so we’re hoping Stateside audiences will get to see this beautifully shot film as soon as possible.
