Melissa McCarthy does what Melissa McCarthy does best in the first trailer for “Horrible Bosses” director Seth Gordon’s new comedy “Identity Thief,” acting even more outrageous than her Oscar-nominated turn as Megan in last summer’s “Bridesmaids.” Here she plays a Floridian who steals Colorado-resident Jason Bateman’s identity and parties it up big time on his dime. Rather than let the authorities handle it, he hauls ass down to the Sunshine state himself, leading to a face-off between the two Sandy Bigelow Pattersons.
This is the role that Bateman changed the gender on in order to get McCarthy to play it, as the original script called for one guy to steal another guy’s identity. Obviously the gender swap seemss to have been the right move, allowing more comedic opportunities, and Bateman and McCarthy appear to play off each other to great effect. This should be another good one for fans of any of the filmmakers’ previous works.
“Identity Thief” opens on February 8, 2013. Watch the first trailer below.
