We already got Abe as a vampire hunter, and Lincoln gets Daniel Day Lewis’ed come December, but clearly audiences just can’t get enough of the 16th President of the United States. A new film, “The Green Blade Rises” will follow Abe’s early years and will be produced by Terrence Malick, and Deadline reports Australian actor Jason Clarke has landed the male lead in the film, who is not Abe, but his father, Tom Lincoln. Diane Kruger is already on board to play Tom’s wife and Abe’s stepmother, Sarah Lincoln.
Written and directed by longtime Malick collaborator A.J. Edwards, “The Green Blade Rises” will trace the hardships over the course of three years in young Abraham’s life, including one incident where his father abandons him in the wilderness in the middle of winter. Tom is described as having “a callous, quiet demeanor, verbally and physically abusive towards Abe on many occasions, but [also] lets his son know how proud he is of him.” The film will be shot in black and white and begins production this fall.
Clarke can currently be seen as the third brother to Shia LaBeouf and Tom Hardy in John Hillcoat’s “Lawless”, and has also wrapped up shooting on Kathryn Bigelow’s Bin Laden thriller “Zero Dark Thirty”, set for release in December, and Baz Luhrmann’s “The Great Gatsby”, recently pushed back to next summer. He’s currently filming “White House Down” opposite Channing Tatum.
