Is this our Johanna? After several days of rumor and speculation, it seems Zoe Aggeliki, initially reported to be the front-runner for the role of Johanna Mason in “The Hunger Games: Catching Fire”, may be very close to landing the highly coveted part. While still not treating it as 100% official, Deadline seems confident Aggeliki is the one, stating that the model/actress is “the one in the most serious talks” after auditioning for director Francis Lawrence. Jena Malone is/was the other actress in the running, but may be losing out to someone lesser known.
Jennifer Lawrence’s arrow-slinging heroine Katniss Everdeen will meet Aggeliki’s Johanna Mason in “Catching Fire”, where they have an antagonistic relationship initially, which deepens into a trusted friendship. Johanna is in her twenties, and like Katniss and Josh Hutcherson’s Peeta, is a former Tribute and survivor of the Hunger Games. She hails from District 7, and has lost everyone she knows, making her jaded and dangerous – she’s got nothing left to lose. With dark hair and dark eyes, at one point she shaves all of her hair off – so Aggeliki may be in for a dramatic transformation, following the likes of Rooney Mara for “The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo” and Natalie Portman for “V for Vendetta.” “The Hunger Games: Catching Fire” will film this fall for a November 23, 2013 release.
The Swedish-born Aggeliki is 18, making her the youngest of the “Catching Fire” cast thus far, interesting since Johanna is supposed to be several years older than Lawrence’s Katniss. She’ll appear in the upcoming “Fun Size” and “Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters”, which also stars Leven Rambin, who played District 1 tribute Glimmer in “The Hunger Games.”
