Our first look at one of the most highly anticipated movies of the year has arrived, and as with all of Baz Luhrmann’s films, “The Great Gatsby” is visually striking and stunning. Set in a sort of hyper reality doubling for 1920s New York, the costumes, set pieces and cinematography pop with color and hazy, blurry, glowy hints of magical realism. Carey Mulligan seems wholly transformed, looking and sounding unlike herself but like a quintessential 1920s society girl as Daisy Buchanan, coming face to face with old flame Jay Gatsby, played by Leonardo Dicaprio with his usual intensity. Tobey Maguire’s Nick Carraway is present but mostly silent, while only a brief shots of Joel Edgerton’s intimidating and moustached Tom Buchanan is glimpsed.
There’s still a lot of question marks hanging over this film and not all of our fears are quelled, though this trailer certainly confirms that if nothing else, it will be a two hour feast for the eyes. “The Great Gatsby” will be released on Christmas Day, December 25th.
