Now that the circus of deciding who will be directing “The Hunger Games” sequel “Catching Fire” is finally over (in case you haven’t heard: “Hunger Games” director Gary Ross is out, and “Water for Elephants” director Francis Lawrence landed the coveted job), we can move on to more fun speculation about who might play some of the fan-favorite characters that begin showing up in the sequel.
We could begin nowhere else but with Finnick Odair, the 24 year old former Hunger Games victor from District 4 who becomes one of Katniss’s most important allies and closest friends. He’s also incredibly charming and attractive, so that helps too. Finnick won the games when he was 14 through his expert use of a trident. With District 4 being by the sea, Finnick is also a great swimmer, with bronzed skin and tousled copper hair, but don’t be mistaken that he’s just a pretty face. Finnick has a dark past and uncertain future, just like every citizen of Panem, and his value to Katniss as they grow closer is indispensable.
With that in mind, we’ve compiled a list of five young actors who have demonstrated all the strength and charm and swagger and heartbreaking sadness that would make them more than suited to join Jennifer Lawrence, Josh Hutcherson and Liam Hemsworth and step into Finnick’s shoes. See our choices below and do leave us your suggestions in the comments!
Harry Lloyd
An unconventional choice, perhaps, but he’s also probably our favorite choice simply because of that. Many people probably wouldn’t even recognize Lloyd if they saw him on the street, and that’s in no small part due to the fact that his major breakout role was on the HBO series “Game of Thrones”, and he looked, well, like this. But the guy’s got the looks and swagger as well as vulnerability and acting talent to pull off Finnick. His “Game of Thrones” co-stars are all popping up on the big screen and he’s got another advantage: His stint on the show is over thanks to a boiling pot of gold, leaving him free to do movies full time. Give him a call, Lionsgate!
Armie Hammer
With that muscular build, tanned skin and those piercing eyes, it’s no wonder “The Social Network” star is such a fan favorite for the role. Not only that, but Hammer has charisma out the wazoo, keen comedic timing, and grit when it’s called for. All qualities that would make him an impossibly perfect Finnick Odair. But Hammer is a major rising star in Hollywood and his dance card is rapidly filling up, so Lawrence would probably have to move fast to pin him down, especially since Hammer would have to commit to shooting three movies for the franchise (of course “Mockingjay” will be split into two movies!).
Jesse Williams
Bright sea-foam eyes and tan skin, check and check. The dreamy Williams first made young female audiences sit up and pay attention when he stripped naked to play Alexis Bledel’s love interest in “The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants 2″, and we they haven’t stopped staring since. And it doesn’t hurt that he can play sexy and smoldering one second, sensitive and thoughtful the next. Williams has been sticking mostly to TV roles since, as a regular on “Grey’s Anatomy” most recently, but the finally released surprise horror hit “Cabin in the Woods” should put him back on the radar of feature film casting directors.
Garrett Hedlund
Let’s face it, Garrett Hedlund’s name probably will pop up when real casting decisions start getting made on “Catching Fire.” He’s one of the most talked about young actors right now, being in contention for one high profile role after another (the latest: Akiva Goldsman’s “Winter’s Tale”). Still, it’s not hard to see why Hedlund would make an amazing Finnick. The looks, the charm, the acting, it’s all working in his favor here. Like Hammer though, Hedlund may prove to be too in demand, especially if the reviews for “On the Road” coming out of Cannes are positive.
Hunter Parrish
“The Hunger Games” fans have a long history with Parrish, and they’re just not ready to give up on him yet. Overwhelmingly the fan favorite to play the role of sweet and sensitive male lead Peeta Mellark, he ultimately lost out to the slightly miscast Josh Hutcherson, but who says that’s the end of the road for Parrish? One factor that kept him from being Peeta was perhaps his age. Hutcherson is a suitable 19, while Parrish is 24. No problem there for Finnick, who’s supposed to be and look older than Katniss and Peeta. And so many of the qualities that made him right for Peeta could work for Finnick too: his charming personality, his innate sweetness, that ability to be totally heartbreaking. And it sure would make it up to the fans who championed him for Peeta for so many months.
There you have it, five guys we think would make great Finnicks. What do you think? Who do you want to see as Finnick? And stay tuned for our choices for Johanna!

I agree with Garrett Hedlund or Hunter Parrish. Would love to see them as Finnick
Not bad choices, but I really do think that Max Irons should have been listed as a heavy contender!
Definitely would have included Max Irons if he hadn’t joined “The Host.” Not sure if he’d be available now.
“he ultimately lost out to the slightly miscast Josh Hutcherson”
Miscast? Are you kidding, Josh Hutcherson did an amazing job as Peeta. He is the first person that popped into my head actually when I was reading the book. I personally don’t think that Hunter Parrish could have pulled it off.
Hutcherson was definitely miscast. He made me root for Gale even though I loved Peeta in the books. Hunter would have been perfect and he would have actually had chemistry with Jennifer Lawrence, who looks like Hutcherson’s older sister. Lawrence and Gary Ross have also said multiple times how she and Josh had brother-sister chemistry and Gary would try to force them to act like they liked each other. Awkward!
Did you read the book? Of course, you were supposed to root for Gale at the start of the movie! That was the whole thing! Katniss mistrust of Peeta! Geeze!
Josh Hutcherson was perfect for the role! He got everything nailed right!
Obviously I read the book, as I said I loved Peeta in the book. Josh Hutcherson was not the Peeta from the book.
Well if you did then you’ll realize what Peeta was to Katniss in the first book. Was there fireworks? Hell no. Everything was one-sided and unrequited. Even Gary Ross knew this which is why he explicitly toned down the romance between Katniss and Peeta.
Peeta is different for every person because when we read the book our imagination is at work. But I can definitely say that for me, and the people I know who also read the book, Josh Hutcherson embodied Peeta. In fact, I like his portrayal better in the movies because he’s not just some love-struck fool as he was in the books.
@Baily – You’re wrong about Hutcherson’s portrayal of Peeta. In the book Peeta was charming, sly, cunning and you couldn’t trust him because he was such a good actor. In the movie he was exactly like you said – just a lovesick fool. Katniss had to take care of him the entire time just like she had to take care of Prim and Rue. He was not someone you could root for her to be with, he was too pathetic. Not so in the book, where he brought his own strengths to match Katniss’s.
Actually I think you’re wrong here. I do believe that book and movie Peeta were different, but I feel that Josh gave Peeta more of a backbone. He seemed a stronger character to me. I think you have the unpopular opinion.
Hutcherson gave Peeta MORE of a backbone? Boy if that isn’t one of the most completely false statements I’ve ever read…
And of course I have the unpopular opinion. As soon as a movie comes out most fanbases forget all about the book and take the movie as canon.
@Linda I don’t think you got Peeta or the deal with Katniss, at all. He wasn’t cunning or sly. He was charismatic and that’s how he handled the crowd. The mistrust comes from Katniss, because she doesn’t trust anyone and because they’re supposed to kill each other, not because Peeta gave her true reasons to distrust her. Peeta only lied when he sided with the tributes to protect her and that’s about it. Everything he said and did was pure and real. He only starts playing the part in Catching Fire.
Peeta is indeed a love-sick fool in the book. He doesn’t realize much of anything and he ends up being dead weight for the most part (not that’s it’s a bad thing) The “lack of chemistry” isn’t because of the actors but because of the scenes themselves and the direction. I honestly felt a lot of chemistry between them.
He was very cunning and sly, it was made crystal clear that he brought up being in love with Katniss in public in order to play the audience, and when he sided with the Careers he was convincing. Hutcherson made him the pathetic dead weight in the movie, but that is not him in the book. In the book he was Katniss’s equal, he didn’t have her strengths but she didn’t have his. They balanced each other out. As for the chemistry, the filmmakers and cast have all talked about how little chemistry they had… The fact that they think it’s funny and not detrimental to the material is a major problem.
Eh, I think Hutcherson did a good job for what he was given. Look at what they took away from him that made him more strong in the book. They took away his exceling in hand-to-hand combat (Katniss mentions that in training), when Katniss first sees him in the arena he’s bruised, bleeding and limping leading her to believe he joined the fight in the cornucopia, he kills the other tribute who starts the fire the first night in the arena, he comforts Katniss when she’s upset about Thresh, they only gave him 2 “Fun” lines – the sniffing and then asking for the bow from Katniss. Look at what Hutcherson got right…the reaping scene and the emotion in the car ride, his reaction when Katniss gets the 11, and in the end when he says he doesn’t want to forget – I can see how he understands that Katniss doesn’t love him back…uh, wait a minute, isn’t this thread suppose to be about Finnick not Peeta! Hahahahaha!
Linda, you are absolutely right about Peeta. I am a huge fan of both Josh and Jennifer. To be honest, when I first heard about the cast, my initial concern was Jennifer Lawrence as Katniss, but after watching the movie, the only person who didn’t fit in was Josh. He was short and he looks weird as a blonde after seeing him as a brunette in a large number of flicks. Peeta is also described as being muscular and even though Josh Hutcherson put on some pounds for this role, he still looks like a twig. Hunter Parrish would’ve been a better choice for Peeta. Garrett Hedlund is my pick for my favorite character Finnick Odair.
Wow Linda you really got the wrong impression of Peeta from the book. People compare him St. peter because he is so good to a fault, no cunning there. Katniss THINKS this might be the case, but we come to find he really was a good person all along.
Josh was AMAZING! Perfect choice for the role.
Nope. He is not miscast. And Peeta is not sly or cunning (but if that’s the impression you get, I can’t change it). He’s just an love-struck, charismatic guy. Hutcherson did a fantastic job, though, with what was given to him. You have to take into consideration the script and not JUST the performance.
As for Finnik, I like these options! Armie is perhaps my favorite from this list.
Armie Hammer, Armie Hammer! He’s the only Finnick.
I second this. Have you seen Mirror, Mirror? Even The Evil Queen herself found him terribly distracting!
Has to be Armie Hammer. He has all the physical characteristics and personality to pull it off.
Garrett Hedlund!! He has the physical aspects of Finnick and is an awesome actor. Another person who wasn’t listed that I would love to see as Finnick would be James Gaisford. He is an unrecognized actor and is totally dreamy! He is an awesome actor too! He is my top choice for Finnick.
I totally agree with you! I found him through MainstayPro’s YouTube.. As Finnick and young Haymitch. He really did play a terrific Finnick. You know, I think that if they don’t cast him as Finnick.. They should cast him as young Haymitch! Unless, of course, they cut Haymitch’s Quell out of the movie. Although I’m still a big fan of Grant Gustin for Finnick, I am just as equally excited about James Gaisford.
I think either Garrett Jesse or hunter… Primarily Jesse because I pictured finnick well… Not white? And I love josh hutcherson but he was a miscast
Wow there are some terrible suggestions on here.I laughed when Parish was suggested for Peeta, I laugh when he’s suggested for Finnick. Finnick is 24 and a ‘man’s man’, big strong, etc. He is going to have to haul Peeta around the arena, and Hammer has the size that it would be believable. At least no one here is suggested 5 foot 6 Ryan Kwanton, which I saw on another board.
I really llike Parrish and Hedlund but I really see Grant Gustin as Finnick, they already asked him if he would like to play Finnick because a lot of hunger games’ fans see finnick as him!
Grant Gustin started the “Grant Gustin for Finnick” bandwagon. I doubt he’d even get an audition.
I think Grant Gustin looks waaay too young to be playing Finnick. He got his name playing high-school aged kids and he looks high-school aged; Finnick is 24.
Grant Gustin is the same age as Jennifer Lawrence though. And Finnick is supposed to be 7 years older than Katniss. He’s a great actor but no way could he pass as being 7 years older than Jen, it just wouldn’t work.
omg, i thought of that too because he has the right eyes, hair, skin tone. i was just watching a video from glee of him singing HE IS PERFECT!!!!!!
Jared Padalecki has the height, the body and the ability to play very crazy very well (also see Supernatural for all of S7).
Speaking of Supernatural, Jensen Ackles can also qualify as Finnick tbh
ARMIE HAMMER
I really think Garrett Hedlund should play Finnick, he has everything that one needs to portray Finnick believably. He is actually who I pictured while reading the book.
GARRETT HEDLUND ALL THE WAY. WHO CARES IF HE’S IN DEMAND? HE’D CLEAR HIS SCHEDULE FOR THIS!!!! :D
If I had to pick from these I’d go with Hunter or Armie, but my ideal Finnick will always be Jeremy Sumpter. And i loved josh as peeta, sure he wasn’t what i expected but he was a very pleasant surprise.
garrett hedlund or hunter parrishhhh!!!!
Armie Hammer is definitely who I imagine as Finnick! He’d be amazing.
I think these were all good choices BUT I see Finnick as either Hunter Parrish or Jesse Williams. Either would be able to play the sexy confident Finnick. Between the two I would pick Parrish I think…his look fits more.
Armie or Garrett for Finnick. Those are the only two I could see conceivably doing the part justice.
Hunter would make a PERFECT Finnick. He’s got both the acting chops and the right look for the role, not to mention Hunger Games fans on his side. Really hope he nabs the role! As for Johanna, I hope Kristen Bell gets included in the list.
Armie Hammer IS Finnick. Done deal. Sign him up and start the shoot.
Jesse Williams fits the description, he’s got the perfect charming smile, and he can flirt like nobody’s business. He also has the build of a swimmer, and is a pretty great actor!
I’ve never wanted an actor to get a part more than I want him to play Finnick. He would be wonderful.
(None of the other guys are remotely tan… If it’s not Jesse, I really hope they don’t go for a blond/blue-eyed guy, tbh. We’ve seen enough of that in films already.)
Armie Hammer would be the perfect choice. Not only is he a great actor, he is very similar to Finnick as well. He’s even fond of knot-tying!
He can be charming (like in “Mirror Mirror”) and serious (as seen in film “J.Edgar”) .
ARMIEEEE. The man is seriously the PERFECT Finnick! Collins completely specified that Finnick is TALL and Armie is 6’5, plus he’s a PHENOMENAL actor who can do charming/silly and serious. But if it just absolutely can’t be Armie I will rend my clothing and mourn–I mean, I would be happy with Jesse Williams (love him) or Garrett Hedlund. Hunter Parrish is one of my all-time favorite actors but he just doesn’t seem like Finnick to me, nor does Harry Lloyd, and a lot of the other “fan favorites” are just way too young-looking/not skilled enough actors
Harry Lloyd all the way! He’s so talented, and I loved him in Doctor Who.
Armie Hammar or Hunter Parish for sure!
Armie Hammer would make a brilliant Finnick for sure! He has the perfect look for it and he’s also a fantastic actor. Everytime I read the books I picture him as Finnick!
Armmie Hammer is a good actor, he did it very well in the social network, I think he will be beyonde perfection, just like Jennifer Lawrence and Josh Hutchershon
please Armmie Hammer to be Finnick Odair!!!!!!!
Armie all the Way!!!!!!
Armie has the looks, talent and charm. Can’t say that about the rest of the actors mentioned. I mean, really Garrett Hedlund? He’s cute, but the dude is dry.
armie hammer! so many of the suggestions across the board for finnick are actors who are too young looking (he has to LOOK 7 years older than jennifer lawrence), not tall/muscular enough (he is supposed to be able to carry peeta!), or just in general wrong! armie is exactly what i pictured…it is uncanny how he is like the human embodiment straight out of my imagination while reading catching fire and mockingjay. not to mention how he can certainly pull off the acting, from the flirtatious player role up through the vulnerable, sensitive scenes (just take a look at j. edgar for that). definitely my pick.
“slightly miscast Josh Hutcherson” whaat? Completely disagree. I thought his portrayal of Peeta was really good! I actually liked Gale more in parts of the first book, but he really made me like Peeta more. The only part that could possibly hurt his portrayal of Peeta was the internal struggle of Katniss, but that was completely at Gary Ross’ discretion.
And it was Gary Ross’ discretion to cast an actor who he knew had no chemistry with Jennifer Lawrence. *srhug*
GARRETT HEDLUND ALL THE WAY!
Garrett all the way. When I dream of Finnick, he’s the one I picture at night. Mmmmm mmmmm mmmmm. ;)
I admit Hutcherson seemed an odd choice at first, but he won me over completely in the film. The idea that Peeta in the film is weaker than in the book is crazy though. She does NOT take care of Peeta (like Prim & Rue) more in the film than in the book, in fact it’s the opposite!! I actually preferred that change that Ross made. In the book the medicine doesn’t heal Peeta enough, he’s lagging when they run to the cornucopia, etc. In the film he covers enough that Katniss doesn’t have to protect him. In fact, he pushes her up first. When they fight Cato, one of my favorite scenes was a movie addition: Cato choking, killing Katniss and Peeta throws him off her like he’s just a sack of flour. That action is what gets Peeta in the headlock thing where Katniss has to decide who to shoot. To me, that was perfect because Peeta may have gotten into trouble, but it was for protecting her, not just being weak/useless. And for the record Peeta’s always been my favorite with Finnick as a close second. I’m still upset about Ross leaving, all I ask is that we do in fact get to see/hear the line about Finnick Odair’s underwear in Mockingjay. Lol And that strategically placed knot in Catching Fire. Oh yeah. ;)
I 100% agree.. Peeta is weaker in the book than the movie, nothing’s wrong with it, not all boys have to be sporty. And Peeta has other incredible traits but due to lack of time, cannot be expanded in the movie. Thanks to Gary Ross and the portrayal of Josh Hutcherson, they didn’t let movie goers think that Peeta had become too much of a weight for Katniss, which is sadly, not very popular for a movie character especially for a guy character.
Katniss in the book, had been going back and forth about Peeta and it was only because she didn’t want to trust anybody, even someone that gave her hope during tough times. Her internal monologue let us know that. But Peeta had been very consistent about his feelings and Josh Hutcherson had been very good showing that to the viewers. Proof? Look at how large his fan base had become and not all of them read the book.
Sorry for my grammar. English is not my first language
Just really want to comment.
I like this group you’ve pooled together, although I still question people’s desire to have Hunter be part of the cast. One of the things that I think people keep forgetting about Finnick is his height, he’s characterized as tall — Hunter’s only 5’7, which is the same height as Jen and Josh.
My top choice is Armie Hammer — and despite the fact that he’s a rising star, and he’s got a schedule that’s filling up fast, I think Lionsgate and Lawrence will pay attention to the fact that he has the largest fan fervor for him being cast. Seriously, compare the numbers of the Facebook’s dedicated to Garrett Hedlund, Grant Gustin, and then look at the numbers on the Armie Hammer for Finnick Odair page — it’s broken 1,000, which is a lot for a fan-run cmapaign for an actor in a role. Lionsgate would have to be right stupid not to at least have a meeting with him at this point.
Hammer with the largest fan ferver is questionable. By my judgment it’s Garrett Hedlund with the biggest number of supporters. You can’t judge by just one factor like Facebook. Hammer has a concentrated group of fans who probably all know each other, but in general in various comment sections, etc. I see Hedlund mentioned much more. Who can say really? I hope they don’t pick someone just because of fans anyway.
No one’s heard of Garret Hedlund outside a very small circle Linda, sorry. He’s by no means a fan favorite.
“Slightly miscast Hutcherson?” I’m sorry but I still believe Hunter Parrish would’ve been a terrible choice for Peeta. He’s 24 years old, way way way too old to play a believable teen boy. People might say the same for Jennifer, but the difference is that females mature (physically) faster than men. A 16/17 yr old girl doesn’t look too different to a 20/21 yr old physically. (Use Stewart for example. She did Twilight at 16 and is now 21… the changes aren’t too obvious. She still looks much like she did 5 years ago) But boys change radically, and Hunter looks too much of a man to play Peeta. Josh, I think, was perfectly cast. He’s not too big, so you believe it when he doesn’t just trump over his competition, and he displays an incredible amount of sympathy and sensitivity. You believe he is as pure and open as Peeta is.
Anyway, agree with much of your choices (except for Parrish as Finnick) I’m sorry I don’t find the actor charismatic at all.
with the exception of Armie Hammer (no just no) this is a good list.
Jesse Williams is my 1st choice. Garrett Hedlund being a distant 2nd but I’d ecstatic with either.
i choosed Garrett Hedlund or maybe Charlie Hunnam :P
whoever the cast for finnick, i wish lionsgate giving attention to for finnick role because i believe a lots people love him. hehe :)
Hunter Parrish!!!!!!!!!!!
armie hammer honestly seems perfect for the job and ive seen him in enough movies to say that he can handle it. buuuttt, if he really were up for it, i wouldnt mind jesse williams. it would be cool if he could pull it off but i wouldnt risk it i mean i dont want them to cast someone who will ruin the hunger games experience for me :S
Out of all these choices I like ARMIE HAMMER the best. He’s perfect as Finnick in every way. He has the look, the charm and the wicked smile. Lionsgate, CAST HIM ALREADY PLEASE.
My second choice would be Hunter Parrish of course. I’m still mourning to this day that he lost out the role of Peeta to Josh. I was a HUGE advocate of Hunter4Peeta.
ithink that dude in Magic mike ummmmm Alex Pettyfer shoud play Finnick
Hutcherson was a complete miscast. He is not a very good actor and he seemed completely out of place for the role. They should have gotten a different actor for the role because he was horrible and did not fit at all. That would’ve made the move a lot better. He didn’t look the part and seemed ill at ease. Although I’m sure he tried and maybe is a good actor, he is not suited to this kind of role.
Josh was amazing. Perfect for the role.
Jesse is the only one out of these five who is even remotely close to the completely description of Finnick–green eyes, tanned skin, muscular and tall. The other guys are blondes or blue-eyed, and pale.
How is Garrett Hedlund not Finnick? Green eyes, tan, and bronze-y colored hair, and tall, idk about muscular. Hair color and skin tone also have nothing to do with it, considering those can be changed. Garrett Hedlund is also a better actor than Jesse is.
Garrett Hedlund is MY Finnick Odair!
Garret Hedlund is the only finnick! But I could see Jesse playing finnick. GARRET HEDLUND IS MY FINNICK
I would be so excited if Harry was Finnick. I agree that Hutcherson was miscast and Harry would cancel that out a lot. But I think any of these guys would be really good/interesting. I haven’t seen Jesse in anything but the Sisterhood movie but he’s really pretty so I think I’d be okay. I’m not really sure about Garrett, I don’t have anything against him but I don’t really see him as Finnick.
But ugh the more I think about it the more I REALLY want Harry to be Finnick.
GARRETT HEDLUND FOR FINNICK PLEASE!!!! HE’S SO PERFECT!!
I like Hunter and Jeremy as Finnick, and I thought Josh was brillant as Peeta. Peeta had physical strength he proved that in the training room but he had a different kind of strength that Katniss needed and Gale couldnt give her. Peeta was the only one who understood what it was like going through the Hunger Games. Peeta knew what Katniss needed and he he knew how to hold her.I thought it was odd that a lot of the winners of the Hunger Games hooked up. I guess the odds were in their favor.
ok I have to add Drew Van Acker to the list.
Armie Hammer is my choice, I can perfectly picture him in the scene where he meets Katniss, trying to charm her.
And Josh WAS NOT miscast! He gives Peeta everything it takes to make the character so believable and loving.
What I believe is that the studio didn’t really think how big THG will become and I’m sure they didn’t do more in several scenes in the movies. But now, with a huge (Peeta/Katniss) fanbase, they will have to give the audience what they want: more scene of these two in “Catching Fire”, meaning that Josh will have to show more of his great acting skills.
And who said Josh and Jennifer don’t have chemistry? Have you seen their interviews? They’re great together.
Where alex pettyfer?
Armie Hammer would be good, but the perfect choice for Finnick is someone no one else has thought of. His name is John Barrowman, but everyone knows him better as CAPTAIN JACK HARKNESS from TORCHWOOD. He would just be so good.
IAN SOMMERHOLDER WOULD BE PERFECT FOR FINNICK
My fav for Finnick of the 5 would have to be either Hunter Parrish or Armie Hammer!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Chris Evans, What so many people forget is that Finnick needs to have a fairly large build because when they finally go back into the arena he has to carry both Peeta and Mags at the same time, on top of that the actor needs to be a fair amount taller then Jennifer who is between 5’7″ and 5’9″, There are very few actors that can fit that role but none of the ones listed come close.
Garrett Hedlund.. the closest actor I can actually see playing Finnick. If you need further clarification – http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KzLE1rK7J48

well i think just to spice it up a bit francis lawrence should consider my opinion because hows. this sound joana and katniss fight like physically when joana slaps her. i mean its the hunger games any thing can happen and p.s i would so want to joanas ass on the floor serves her right i mean so what katniss is made of. hope you consider it .
