Recent Vanity Fair cover girl Mia Wasikowska is going from “Jane Eyre” to “Madame Bovary”, according to Variety. The trade also reports Paul Giamatti is circling a key role as well.

Rose Barreneche scripted the new adaptation of Gustave Flaubert’s first novel and masterpiece, and Wasikowska will play the titular character of Emma Bovary, a doctor’s wife who lives beyond her means and takes on many adulterous affairs in order to combat the ennui of her life. Sophie Barthes will direct the new adaptation, which is said to be faithful to Flaubert’s text but updated with youthful and modern sensibilities. It will be at least the 6th time the novel has been adapted for the screen.

Australia-born Wasikowska broke out in 2010 when Tim Burton picked her from obscurity to play the lead in his “Alice in Wonderland” reinvention, which went on to gross more than a billion dollars worldwide. Since them Wasikowska has stuck mostly to serious indie flicks, proving her acting chops in films like “The Kids Are All Right” and last year’s “Jane Eyre.” She seems to be a fan of classic literary adaptations, as she’s also attached to a loose adaptation of Dostoyevsky’s “The Double” with Jesse Eisenberg. This fall she will star in Jim Jarmusch’s new vampire movie “Only Lovers Left Alive” with Tom Hiddleston and Tilda Swinton.
