It’s the week before Comic-Con and studios are bringing out the big guns in promoting their upcoming big budget blockbusters. More and more will be revealed in the lead up to next Thursday and then even more over the course of next weekend, but Sony gets a jump on the competition by being out of the gate first, releasing to this week’s cover of Entertainment Weekly some brand new shots of Andrew Garfield in costume and in action as Peter Parker, aka “The Amazing Spider-Man.”
EW also reveals the first stills taken from the movie itself, featuring Peter out of his Spidey costume hanging upside down on a subway, getting close to Emma Stone as first love Gwen Stacy and hanging out with Sally Field and Martin Sheen as Uncle Ben and Aunt May. Also featured is Rhys Ifans as Dr. Curt Connors, who transforms into formidable Spidey villain The Lizard after an experiment goes awry.
Said to be “more gritty, more contemporary”, director Marc Webb tells EW how this reboot differs from the Sam Raimi-Tobey Maguire adaptations of the classic Marvel superhero: “Ultimately what this movie is about is a kid who grows up looking for his father and finds himself. And that’s a Spider-Man story we haven’t seen before.”
“The Amazing Spider-Man” recently wrapped up filming and is set for release on July 3, 2012. Garfield, Stone and Webb are set to headline one of the most anticipated panels at Comic Con next Friday.
