Mae Whitman joins Logan Lerman and Emma Watson in “Perks” adaptation

Mae Whitman, star of TV show Parenthood has signed on to star alongside Emma Watson and Logan Lerman in the adaptation of The Perks of Being a Wallflower.

Variety are today reporting that Whitman is to play Mary Elizabeth, “a tattooed vegetarian who acts as the protagonist’s first girlfriend”. Last seen on the big screen alongside Michael Cera and Mary Elizabeth Winstead in Scott Pilgrim vs. the World, Whitman can next be seen alongside John Cusack in crime mystery The Factory.

The Perks of Being a Wallflower follows 15 year old Charlie (Lerman), an outsider who struggles to to cope with mental illness, first love and the suicide of his best friend, as well as trying to find out where he belongs, by writing letters to an anonymous friend. The screenplay has been written by Stephen Chbosky who is also the author of the book, and production is due to begin next month.
