Conspicuously missing from the initial list of finalists, Carey Mulligan is now the front-runner to take the role of Daisy Buchanan opposite Leonardo DiCaprio in Baz Luhrmann’s “The Great Gatsby”, according to Vulture. Luhrmann and DiCaprio were sweet on Scarlett Johansson for the role, but since she is now committed to shooting “We Bought a Zoo” next spring, scheduling conflicts are likely and Mulligan is now on the top of their list. She tested for the part in New York last week. Filming will begin next summer.

As past casting roller coasters have taught us, this is far from being a done deal. We fully expect different sources to claim various actresses are “front-runners” or “close to being cast” before anything official comes from Luhrmann or Sony.

An Oscar nominee for last year’s “An Education”, Mulligan is currently wrapping up shooting on “Drive” opposite Ryan Gosling and can currently be seen in “Never Let Me Go”.
